If your labor is induced, there are a number of ways this can be done:

1 - breaking your waters - puncturing the amniotic sac, which means your waters leak out. This can often stimulate contractions. This procedure is sometimes known as ARM, for Artificial Rupture of the Membranes, or amniotomy;

2 - giving you a peccary of hormone gel in your vagina, which delivers labor-inducing hormones to the cervix; or

3 - giving you a drip of oxytocin which puts the hormone directly into your bloodstream to stimulate labor.

Induced labor can sometimes mean your contractions come on quickly and intensively, and this may make it harder to cope with. So when deciding whether this option is for you, you may want to take this into account. You may end up needing more pain relief as a result.

A baby that's gone more than a week or so over the 'official' due date may have dryer skin which tends to flake. This is because the vernix that would normally cover the skin has stopped being produced.

`Up to 10% of pregnancies are not delivered by 42 weeks... and only a small number of pregnancies that go past 42 weeks have problems. In fact, about 95% of post term babies are born without problems.` --American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG, 2005)

oh, and i didn't think i was having contractions either, til they hooked me up. i had been having what i thought were normal 'low-down-pelvis-stretching' pains, and it turns out they were contractions....

dio: don't worry. all they'll do is hook you up to check on the little one's movement and heartrate, and will check your level of amniotic fluid. nothing to worry about. as long as the baby is still active in the womb, no panic. they will probably set an induction date, tho...thats what happened to me. i was due on the 28th, got the above-mentioned tests this past monday, and will be started for induction either tomorrow nite or friday nite.

I was due July 31st and stil nothing, no pain no contractions NOTHING! Im starting to worry a little bit now :s I have my doctors appointment tommorrow so hopefully they can at least tell me whats going on...an inducement or something... Should I be this worried??

hey ladies. dreamt last nite I gave birth to a sweet little donkey that we named Becker...he came out hooves first...how weird is that? But it was totally natural, and we were so happy! Hoping that thats a sign....Anybody else have numb fingers? If I do anything that requires manual dexterity with my right hand (like typing this) my fingertips go numb....and my toes on my right foot went numb earlier...I figure he's just lying on a nerve, but its so weird......

Who would of thought, 41 weeks and still pregnant. Went to the doctors today and I measured at a 1-2 cm dialation. It could be anyday now. I will be induced on Monday the 11th if I don't have him this week.

(i'll post this here too, because this is where i belong, but seems a bit of a ghost town) Hey guys! I'm officially in week 41, but the last message in there is from yesterday, so I'm sticking here for now...I've made PROGRESS! Hallelujah! Well sort of. Went for my 41-weeks-why-isn't-that-baby-coming -out monitoring this morning. They hooked me up, and lo and behold, I'm having contractions! I just don't feel them much. I thought they were just normal prego pains, but apparently not! They were between 20 and 7 minutes apart on the monitor, so nothing really to get excited about yet, but its still better than nothing! They didn't check fluid or do an ultrasound because there was only one doctor there today (the prego clinic was FULL) and he had to leave to go do a c-section for twins to boot, so we would have had to wait till around six tonite when he'd MAYBE have time...luckily, MY doctor just happened to pass by, so she looked at my printouts and said i could go....thank goodness! However, my induction is possibly pushed back to friday nite for cervadil and the rest on saturday (rather than thurs-fri) because my doctor has a conference that has been moved around, but thats okay. I'm just happy to know that the little guy is doing amazingly, and that I really am contracting. Its good to know :o) So I doubt I'll go into labour for real today or tonite, but I have hopes that this can maybe happen naturally before thursday or friday...YIPPEEE! Have a great day, everybody!

Get the DVD, 'The Happiest baby on the block' and watch it. We were having issues with our little one crying ALL THE TIME and this helped wonders. I was going crazy at home alone with a crying baby and now I am happy. My baby is 4 weeks old nad happy. Watch it NOW and then when you deliver.

Well tomorrow is the day that I am supposed to get my call for induction as long as they aren't too busy!! I am praying that I will be calling 1st thing in the morning. I am getting kinda nervous though of just adding one more child to our family and wondering how I am going to do it! I think it is all nerves though! Wish me luck and I will update tomorrow.

YAY GIRLS!! GOOD NEWS FINALLY!!!! I'm going to be induced this weekend!!! Just waiting for my call. Had my doc appt today and the doc told me who would have sent me to be induced right then, but the girl he saw ahead of me was 4cms and contracting, and she took the LAST bed! (Apparently they were crazy busy in labour and delivery)... so ya, he said we're just waiting on a bed, so could be tonight, BUT it definitely will be over the weekend FOR SURE! I'm so excited!!!! FINALLY! there is LIGHT at the end of my no-progress tunnel! haha. Good luck girls, and I'll keep ya posted :)

~*Hello ladies!!Guess what....Sarah Grace is here!!! She was born at 9:43am July 29 08! Only 1hour and 43mins of labor!! She weighed in at 7 pounds9oz and is 20 1/2inches long! All natural will not go into detail as it was the most painful and scariest thing I've ever went through! And this is my 4th child! Anyways she is BEAUTIFUL!! I would go through tat pain 100 more times for her if I had to!! I took her to doc today and she is 6 pounds 13oz I will be posting a brith story but if you scare easy then DO NOT READ!!! I will also be posting pics!! Congrats to everyone that had thier babies!!!! And good luck to those still waiting!! I'm 100% in-love with her!! My little princess Sarah!!*~

Does anyone ever feel like they are going to pass out especially after eating? It's happened way too many times and the Dr doesn't seem to think anything is wrong. I've taken the one hour glucose test and failed, and the 3hour test twice and passed. Lots of times I'll go out to eat and go to Wal-Mart after. By the time i get to the front door, I feel like I'm going to pass out. I get real hot, dizzy, see stars, and see all white. So I hop on the motor cart and take my BP. My upper number has been high (135-149) and my lower number (70-88). My pulse during these times seems rather high (95-125). I freaked out tonight cause I went to take a shower an hour after I ate and got the same fainting feeling and had to lay down right away with shampoo still in my hair. I was seeing stars, got real dizzy, and saw all white. I thank you in advance for any responses and please leave a comment on my page.

luvbaby-im not sure why that would make a difference,because you shake the bottle and everything gets mixed up.naturally there is air inside the bottle and thats why you see the air bubbles?

hi ladies i have ahorrific tale...before you feed your newborn babies call the formula company and or read the direction carefully..i was using too much powder formula per 2 oz of water, i was packing the scoop and making sure there were no air pockets in the scoop wich was the wrong way to do it. my baby was totally constipated too much iron and also it was concentrated ....the formula companys dont put this info on the cans , never pack the scoop and never get rid of the air pockets in the scoop of powder and use the plastic piece that comes with the scoop for rounding the scoop never the rim of the can or the can cover....good luck ladies if you need advice i have a 1 month old

I have a question about something I'm curious about- My sister-in-law believes in the theory that if you chart your basal temp. when trying to conceive and only have sex right before you ovulate, you're more likely to have a boy. The thoughts behind this theory are that the 'boy' sperm swim faster but die earlier and that if you have sex right before you ovulate, they are the only sperm that have a chance to make it to the egg. If you wanted a girl, you would have sex 3 or 4 days before ovulation and then stop- hoping that the 'boy' sperm would have died off by the time the egg is 'ripe.' I personally don't buy into this but she said she had a friend that tried it after having 3 girls, and ended up pregnant with a boy. I personally feel like it's 50/50 and she may have been 'due' for a boy. I actually did the temperature charting to get pregnant, but to be completely honest, it was only so that we would know when we could stop having sex :) We would start trying a week before I normally ovulated and we would do the baby dance every single day until a day or two after I ovulated. . . which can actually get a little tiring/monotonous, so we both kind of wanted to know when it was 'safe to take a break.' My sister-in-law knows that we were temp. charting, and she knows i was kind of hoping for a boy (which it turns out I am pregnant with) and she is convinced that this method works and that we used it. That doesn't bother me; she can think what she wants. . . I'm just curious if there really is any truth to it. I'm going to put a poll on my profile- for those of you that charted with the specific purpose of having a certain gender, please vote to let me know whether or not you were successful in your endeavor :) I'm curious about this.

Hello. I`m from week 37 and have a question...Has anyone ever taken anti-depressants while pregnant or afterwards that is still safe to breastfeed? My Dr. prescribed Zoloft a few months ago, but i wanted to wait til I was closer to delivery. I`m looking for one that doesn`t cause too much weight gain and ok while breastfeeding. Hey Ladies, Bridget Alexis Blu arrived Sunday morning 7/27 at 7:54 am weighing 8lbs. 9oz. 21 inches. Went into labor on my own Sat. morning and was in labor for 23 hours. I had an epidural for most of the time but the last three hours the doctor had it taken out to help me push. I only pushed for 45 minutes but that was by far the hardest thing I've ever done! She is absolutely beautiful. I can't believe I could love something so much.

Hello everyone! We had our sweet, perfect little Cole Benjamin on Wednesday, July 23rd at 1:53PM. He weighed in at 8lbs. 10oz. and is 22in. long. I had another long labor and ended up having to have a c section. I go home tomorrow and cannot wait to be in my own bed! I will post pictures and Cole's birth story soon.
