Congratulations! This week marks the half way point of your pregnancy. It has been 18 weeks since the date of conception and your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5.6 to 6.4 inches. The fetus weighs about 9 ounces and your belly definitely has an obvious bulge. Your waistline has expanded and is no longer visible. Your uterus has now moved up enough that it is pushing your abdomen outwards. The top of your uterus is even with or just below your navel.

For the remainder of your pregnancy, the growing uterus puts pressure on your lungs, stomach and kidneys. This will make you feel short of breath, the need to urinate more frequently and can cause indigestion. The added pressure on your abdomen can also cause your bellybutton to protrude and cause an `outy` instead of an `inny`. Many pregnant women begin to notice stretch marks around this time as well. Your abdominal muscles are being stretched and pushed apart as your baby grows inside of you.
Your baby's skin begins to thicken this week and will develop four layers. Your baby's sebaceous glands secrete a waxy substance called vernix caseosa. Your baby will be born with this wax and it will look like paste. The vernix caseosa is crucial because it protects the fetus' fragile skin from the continuous immersion in amniotic fluid. Lanugo hairs secure the vernix caseosa in place and it is thick around the eyebrows. Scalp hair and toenails are beginning to form at this point. Hair can also be seen on the upper lip and eyebrows.
Around twenty weeks, most doctors will order a routine ultrasound to check the baby's development. Measurements will be taken and the sonogram technician will check to make sure there are no defects or abnormalities. Your ultrasound technician can also see how long your cervix is and can tell you approximately how much your baby weighs at this time. Most expectant women also find out the sex of their baby during this time! If your sonographer does not offer pictures, ask them for a copy of the photos.

I had my ultrasound 2 weeks ago (18 weeks 3 days) and she was already 10 ounces. I thought that sounded big for this stage too...but they all do grow and gain at different rates. I have the added advantage of giving birth to 9+ pound babies at full term too!! My last one was only 8 lbs 5 ozs but they induced me 9 days early so he probably would have ended up in the 9 lb range had they let me go to term!sugarbear8907 -

Has anyone else been feeling tired all the time? I get so freakin' tired in the afternoon, but I can't go to sleep because I have a five year old wanting to go outside and play. I don't like to let him down, so I'm always glad when it rains so I can stay in the house, lay on the couch and be lazy.
My ultrasound is tomorrow at 2:40!! Oh I can hardly wait!! I'm going to get a Memorex DVD RW so it can be recorded. The best part is it will be in 3D...COOL. Isn't technology great?! Preggo-4 -

It's a girl!! We had our big U/S yesterday. My husband and I both thought we were having a boy. It does not matter. We are just so happy to have a baby! They may also adjust our due date based on the measurements. We are measuring at 22 weeks instead of 20. We will wait to see the doctor next week. Happy 20 weeks!!*Baby-Mine* -

Daycare is such a hard choice to make but most people I know have their kids enrolled and the kids love it. With mortgage and gas prices (oy!) daycare is the best and only decision I can make. But of course thats only until I win the lottery (fingers crossed!) miraclebaby08 -

hey ladies!! i'm seeing everyone talking about daycares... hmmm. I worked at daycare for 2 weeks and I LOVE KIDS and i left... i couldnt stand the way the owner treated those babies. BUTTT.. there's really good ones out there, i would just say to go with your first instinct. I'm lucky that i'm not going to have to deal with that, mainly because of my mother and I are working a schedule out so someone is going to be at home with the baby at all times. But for the first couple months up until next summer I'll be able to stay home!! I guess that's one of the benefits about me and my mother being RN'smaybell -

Well at least for most of you working you'll have the weekend off.
I work as a casusl, so i've had to work everyday this week except wednesday. My next day off is on tuesday, the day of my scan so i'm excited about that!
Then i'll be back at work untill the weekend!!!
Housekeeping is hard work!
And i think my employers are trying to force me to leave.... it's a good job i'm stubborn or i would have left weeks ago!

I agree Maybell I am lossing my mind staying home with my rug rats who dont listen to me...
