Born & Birth stories

Dates and numbers:
There are -1 days until your due date on January 05, 2009.
You are 281 days pregnant.
You are 9.2 months pregnant.
You are in your 10th month of pregnancy.
Your 1st trimester: April 01, 2008 to June 30, 2008. (0 - 12 weeks)
Your 2nd trimester: July 01, 2008 to October 13, 2008. (13 - 27 weeks)
Your 3rd trimester: October 14, 2008 to January 06, 2009. (28 - 40 weeks)

You are definitely considered full-term now and you are probably anticipating the arrival of your newborn. The crown-to-rump length of your baby is around 15 inches and your baby is now about 21.5 inches long total. Your baby weighs about 7.5 pounds and your uterus is about 8 inches above the top of your bellybutton.

Your official due date will be sometime this week and you probably have a prenatal check up this week to check for labor progress. Try to stay calm while you are waiting for labor to begin. You should have all of your bags packed and ready to go and your birth plan should be in place. Your labor coach should know what your wishes are and you should be able to get in touch with your labor coach at all times. Use false labor contractions to practice breathing and relaxation techniques that you will use during the actual labor itself.

Your baby continues to move further down the birth canal and this is measured in stations. Station describes the degree to which the presenting part of the baby has descended into the birth canal. The 0 point is a bone landmark in the pelvis, the starting point of the birth canal. If your baby's head is at a -2 station, it means the head is higher inside of you than if your baby were at a +2 station.

After your baby is born, she will be weighed and measured. Your baby may cry loudly or she may be dazed from medications. The doctor will suction your baby's mouth and throat with an aspirator. The nurses will dry her off and place a hat on her head to help keep her warm. Security tags will be placed around her arms and ankles and your baby will be swaddled in a blanket. You will be given the chance to hold your baby right after you have delivered. Shortly after, the nurses generally take the baby to the nursery for a bath and other routine procedures. Your baby will be given Apgar scores according to her condition at 1 and 5 minutes of birth. A total of 10 points can be scored. A score of 10 is unusual and most babies receive scores of 7, 8 or 9. A baby with a low 1-minute score might need to be resuscitated and usually the 5 minute score is much higher after he has time to adjust to life outside of the uterus. APGAR SCORE:
*Heart rate of baby-If your baby does not have a heart rate a score of 0 is given. If the baby's heart rate is less than 100 bpm, a score of 1 is given. If the heart rate is over 100 bpm, a score of 2 is given.
*Respiratory effort of the baby- If your baby is not breathing, a score of 0 is given. If breathing is slow and irregular, a score of 1 is recorded. If your baby is crying and breathing well, a score of 2 is recorded.
*Baby's muscle tone-If your baby's arms and legs are limp and flabby, the score is 0. If some movement is observed and the arms and legs bend a little, a score of 1 is recorded. A score of 2 is given to babies that are active and moving.
*Reflex irritability of the baby-If your baby does not respond to stimulus, a score of 0 is given. If there is a small reflex when the baby is stimulated, a score of 1 is recorded. If your baby responds vigorously when stimulated, 2 points are given.
*Baby's color- If your baby is blue or pale, a score of 0 is given. A score of 1 is given if your baby's body is pink and the arms and legs are blue. If your baby's entire body is pink, a score of 2 is recorded.

At the time of birth, the baby has a total of 300 bones. Some bones will fuse together later, which is why an adult has only 206 bones.

Almost there! Did you know that we also have a month by month calendar for babies? You can find it in the menu under `Babies`: Month by month

does anyone else have a really low pain, almost as if the vagina is bruised? This feels awful. I'm not sure whether it's because hubby and I had sex a couple of times and that put pressure on my privates. It certainly is very uncomfortable.

demmy1 - 2.9 hours ago
Goodnight ladies. I am off to eat some fruity pebbles then try to get some shut eye. Yeah, right.

demmy1 - 3.1 hours ago
AJCUK-I wish you the best of luck and please keep us posted!

AJCUK - 3.4 hours ago
so i don't know if the EPO and RLT worked, but i am due to go in to hospital at 830 this morning (it's now 630) as at 215am this morning my waters broke (or thats what they think at this stage) and then about an hour later i had a bloody show. i am going in 'just to be checked out' at this stage - but hopefully this is it! I have been having bad period like cramps since about 5am, so hopefully progress is being made! BUT, knowing my luck this is just another false alarm! lemonysickness - congrats!

demmy1 - 3.5 hours ago
lemonysickness-Congratulations!!!!!!

demmy1 - 3.6 hours ago
cantwait2bamummy-that definitely sounds like progress. very exciting!

cantwait2bamummy - 5.9 hours ago

lemonysickness - 6.1 hours ago
Hey ladies, using an iPhone to type this till I get released from the hospital on Wednesday, so won't type much and definitely won't post a detailed birth story till then either LOL! But Kaitlyn was born after a lovely 14.5 hours of labor on January 5th, 2009 at 2:20AM by vaginal WITH pain relief (highly recommended, and mad props to you women who go without; you undoubtedly have my respect), but in the end suction had to be used because her head was so huge. =D. She weighed 7lbs 8ozs and 19 inches long. She is absolutely gorgeous and is breastfeeding like a champ. Will definitely post pictures on Wednesday.

cissy - 6.8 hours ago
I am now seeing a new doctor because mine has been on vacation and I just can not make it on the days my original dr. is there. This new doctor already mentioned inducing me, I said to her how about doing the membrains first because I had them scrapped when I was preggo the first time and I started contrations about 24 hours after that, I would rather have less drugs if possible. I am hoping that maybe this dr will do it at my appointment on Wednesday and if I make it to the appointment after that then I will be willing to get induced.

demmy1 - 6.8 hours ago
cantwait2beamummy-I don't think you have anything to worry about unless your water breaks. How is it going for you now?

Momof2after12yrs - 7.1 hours ago
Hi there! 40 wks Still waitting and no sign of baby.

demmy1 - 7.1 hours ago
I googled 'stripping membranes' and it was very interesting...

88 mommy - 7.3 hours ago
Well I'm also in the '40 Weeks Club' too. My due date was yesterday 1/4. Dr's kept telling me from before Christmas that they think she'd come earlier that it'd be any day now. So I was expecting a Christmas baby...then a New Years baby....now I'm wondering does she want to be a Valentine's Day Baby?! ARGGGH *L*

demmy1 - 8.1 hours ago
I went to the doctor today and she was going to induce me tomorrow at the hospital but I talked her into giving me another week. I am very happy because I am only 40 weeks today and my body is showing no signs of being ready at all. I want to give myself at least a chance to go into labor on my own. My doctor is big on inducing too.

MtlMama - 9 hours ago
40 weeks, unbelievable! I'm seeing Dr. tomorrow and pray that something has changed in the past two weeks but it really doesn't feel like it. Honestly, I feel like I could go on being pregnant forever! Question, what exactly does it mean to get your membranes stripped? What do they do? My Dr. has never mentioned it, is big on inducing though which I want to avoid...

Little Blessing - 10 hours ago
Well, I'm 40weeks and 6 days, and still no sign of bub. Doctor also doesn't want to induce me until I'm about 12 days overdue. He won't even discuss induction with me. :( It sucks, cos its the middle of summer and sooo freakin hot over here right now.

cantwait2bamummy - 10.2 hours ago
Ok ladies I just lost my bloody show im freaking out I don't know what im suppose to im so scared

littledebbie99 - 10.3 hours ago
Hello all...now it is official, 40 weeks. Yes we are getting to be such a small group! I am feeling great. Which I don't know if I like. Ha Ha I would love to be in pain right now with some good Strong, REGULAR contractions!

miaelissa - 10.4 hours ago
Well going in to the hospital tomorrow night at 8p.m. and they are going to induce me Wednesday morning. I am so excited but now I am nervous also. ::Scream:: Is this really it? I am still not dialated or effaced any at all. And still closed and thick so I hope and pray all goes well. Q for you ladies that were induced. After they started the pitocin how long did it take for baby to come (I might ask them to delay it a bit b/c my husband will not be able to get there until later that afternoon)??

mynameisellie - 10.7 hours ago
Keep us posted aliboo!! And yes, stripping the membrane isn't very nice, is it? Ugh.

aliboo - 10.8 hours ago
well i guess i made some progress, i moved to 2cm dilated, but my cervix was still thick so my doc stripped my membrane [which hurt like HELL]and tried to 'open my cervix' up a bit. So now i'm 50% effaced and -2 station. Now she could feel the baby's head and my bag of waters....If this doesn't get my labour started i'm already set up for induction on Thursday at 7pm, so the baby should be here by early Friday morning.

pookiekke - 10.9 hours ago
Hey folks. I finally had my little girl. Keira Kristine was born 1/2/08 at 5:50 pm. 7 lbs. 9 ozs. and 20 inches long. I just added a blog to my profile about the delivery.

notpmsimjuscrzy - 11.1 hours ago
i should be in week 40 now! i was due on dec 30th! but my water broke on its own and i had my daughter way back in week 37!!!!!! (12/14/08) but i miss being pregnant! good luck ladies!!!!

mynameisellie - 11.3 hours ago
Gosh. There just aren't many of us left who haven't had their babies.

whepy - 12.4 hours ago
hi guys congrats to all who have had there babies. Hopefully I will be joining you soon. I have noticed this week my hands a feet have become quite swollen, I have had to take my wedding ring off (which I hate)as it was cutting into my finger but will be able to get it back on soon hopefully. Just another body part to inflate!! Never mind I'm just hoping it doesn't take too long for me to get my pre baby weight and body back. Not that I was super fit and healthy to start with but it will be nice to wear other clothes other than my maternity clothes which I have started to loathe. Ilook at them hanging in my wardrobe and they look massive on the hangers but when I put them on I think 'oh there not that bad' but that's only because they fit which is such a depressing thought. I just cannot wait to throw them away. Rant over I feel better now.

cissy - 12.6 hours ago
I am in 40 weeks today, how exciting right.

cantwait2bamummy - 12.9 hours ago

Daniellamaria - 16.9 hours ago
Hey ladies! I had my beautiful little girl yesterday by emergency c-section under general anesthetic due to 17 hrs in labour being 5cm dilated and no progress plus epidural DID NOT work for me at all but shes here and we called her Cydney. I was 5 days overdue and thought she would never come but she suprised us so there is light at the end of the tunnel :-) xxx

littledebbie99 - 18 hours ago
I join all of you tonight...since my due date is tomorrow! Anyone Heard from Kinta?

CandidaAndPaul - 18.7 hours ago
Had our baby girl, Charlie Piper, at 9:42am on January 1st but was the 9th new years baby. She weighed 7 lb 13 ounces and 21 inches, we were due December 30 and had an induction date for Jan 7th........I miss being pregnant now though :( even though i HATED it a week ago

AJCUK - 19.2 hours ago
threes-a-charm - congratulations! Sorry to hear you had a rough time though as things seemed to go so well to begin with :( Hope you have a speedy recovery. akr - I have a very stubborn little man! for about the last 3 weeks i have had back ache, contractions, a couple of 'oh my god this is it', but here i am three days post due date and absolutely miserable with no baby and on bed rest coz of my SPD! Hoping my consultant gives me some good news on Wednesday when I see her.

three-is-a-charm - 19.5 hours ago
Tara Jaiden arrived this morning via c-section after 19 hrs of very complicated labor. Very different than my other two pregnancies that were vaginal and uncomplicated. I went into labor naturally and did not progress passed 90% effaced and 4 cm. My contraction patterns were not strong enough to get the job done. Breaking my water did nothing. Her heart rated dropped with pain medication. My only option at that point was to wait on what might be an emergency c-section if her heart rate kept dropping or wait to her heart rate stablized and do a controlled c-section. I chose the second and it was very successful...it went great. I had a very trying delivery, but she was worth all of it. I will post pictures soon. Wishing everyone waiting great deliveries. :-)

millerville - 19.7 hours ago
Anyone going back and forth from feeling great to feeling miserable? Friday and Saturday I was so sure I was close. Yesterday and today I feel great and think my body forgot how to progress and instead went backwards. Best wishes to all of those who had their babies

akr - 19.8 hours ago
Hi all, My due date was 4th Jan (a bit fed up now as I can't wait!!!). I haven't had any contractions but have had backache and period pains for a few weeks now. Does anyone else have a stubborn baby that seems happy where they are?

whepy - 20.3 hours ago
Hi guys, today is our due date we made it to week 40 without any hiccups. Just waiting on our little guy making his appearance now. We are soooooo excited! Just hope he doesn't keep us waiting too long for a 1st hug.

eloise4421 - 22.6 hours ago
just want to say thankyou to those that replied/commented on my post from a few days ago. i have spoken to my midwife and they are gonna keep a close eye on my for depression once baby is born. so i feel a bit better knowing im not on my own. On a happy note, today is my due date and i have had LOTS of 'bloody show' with some stomach tightenings but i dont think they are contractions cos they dont really hurt. I cant believe im gonna be holding my very own baby in a few days.....it seems so surreal.

lizakn - 22.8 hours ago
Well...I am off to the hospital in less then an hour to be induced!...I'm excited but also very sad that my daughter won't be an only child anymore! She will now have a bad little brother! haha Good Luck to anyone having babies today!!

ginia - 1 days ago
well ladies im officially joining the overdue club :( and im feeling awful...im sick and im really tired and and my body feels like its gonna break lol

ColleensMommy - 1 days ago
Well I thought today would be the day but I had 8 hours of false labor1! Contractions began at about 1 am when my husband and I decided to watch a movie and they started at about 15 minutes apart and by the time the movie was over they were around 10. They also continued to get more intense. I was excited and up all night but did manage to get some sleep for a few hours as the contractions tapered off and I figured it was just not time. Then I woke up at about 6 am to worse pain and I began timing these contractions at 7 minutes apart then they eventually went to 3 but sometimes they were 5 minutes apart. After two more hours of this I decided to get up and eat a light breakfast then call the hospital as I was having contractions for 8 hours at that point and I reallhy thought it was time...go figure, by the time I finished up with breakfast and decided to call the hospiutal, I had not had a contraction for 30 minutes and nothing since then. I am disappointed but glad I didnt go all the way to the hospital only to be sent home since the hospital is about 40 minutes away and we are hosting a playoff party at our house today. I also began spotting a bit this morning too so I am assuming that may be the bloody show? I hope I go soon...I just want this to be over...I was so sure I would be having her today after last night... annie40, my contractions are worse when I lay down too..that is something I was also wondering about...Id like to know if you find out anything .

first babyboy - 1 days ago
aliboo- but then again it worked for me as well as taking the eveing primrose oils, and walking around the malls, and everything,

annie40 - 1 days ago
i don't want to be induced either but if all i need is to have my waters broken or the gel then thats not so bad. question - do they only use the gel to open your cervix enough to be able to get in and break your waters? i finally lost my mucus plug last night which is a big yay! as it must mean my cervix has started to dilate by itself. i have been having contractions for the last at least 12 hpurs which are 11 minutes apart and painful enough to practise my breathing and are lasting for a minute at least, but what i want to know is why do they hurt more when i'm lying down? and am i better to stay laying down because the pain means they are doing more work to open my cervix? xxx

lizakn - 1 days ago
@newlifehopes- I am sure that my Doctor knows the risks of inducing...but like I said, sometimes it is nessessary! Not everyone goes into labour naturaly. I have a friend who has 3 children & with all of them was WAY overdue & had to be induced with all. She had natuaral labours & her boys are perfect. I was induced with my daughter...my labour lasted only 4 hours & 15 mins of pushing. I have never been put on piticon...and I won't be either. And its not like I am 2 days overdue...I am 10. I don't mind being overdue...I have tons of energy & feel fine. But I am also swelling up badly & I have VERY high cholestrol & a not so good heart. {I am not a big girl though...I was 130 prepregnancy} So my doctor is worried about the swelling & the size of the baby. He doesn't want me having to push for hours. And where I refuse to use pain medication...it makes for a hard labour & puts strain on my heart. And like I said before, I am sure none of us want to be induced...but there are also risks of being pregnant too long. And I don't think that any of our doctors would put us in any sort of danger by inducing us. Its wonderful for those women that can go into labour on their own, but not all of us are that lucky.

aliboo - 1 days ago
firstbaby boy- I don't think that sex works for everyone, as i've been having sex and nothing, and yes on top

mynameisellie - 1 days ago
So to those of you - like me - who are just waiting ... are you all fantasizing about your bundles? How about fantasizing about your labor and delivery? I even get sad when we're out and I see a baby. I'm just so longing to hold our little one and kiss her all over that it's kind of driving me mad!!!! ; )

CazWhitney - 1 days ago
Hi all! Just to let you know I had my baby boy Marcos James on 1st Jan! It was a 3 hour labour - omg!! all those pains I have had beforehand really aided to the speed I think! He was 8 pound 7 oz and 55cm in length. The labour was a natural labour and I did not have any drugs (not even gas). I did actually want gas but I went from 1cm dilated to 10cm and ready to push in 45 mins... by the time the midwifes stuffed around I was already pushing He is a little miracle, sleeping well, I am breastfeeding and it freakin' hurts as he is a little hoover but I am hoping it gets better soon love to you all and plenty of labour dust! oh - what brought on my labour was walking - I walked for around 4 hours up and down stairs!!!
