Thumb-sucking at 18 weeks....

By week 18 of your pregnancy, your baby's crown-to-rump length is 5 to 5.5 inches long. Your baby continues to develop fat layers and weighs about 5.25 ounces. Your baby will continue to grow and develop, but the rapid growth will slow down for a little while. You will be able to feel your uterus just below your bellybutton. If you put your fingers sideways to measure, you can feel your uterus about two finger-widths below your bellybutton. At this point of your pregnancy, your uterus is approximately the size of a cantaloupe. Although weight gain varies from woman to woman, your total weight gain at this point should be 10 to 13 pounds.

At this time if you had an ultrasound, heart abnormalities can be detected. If the ultrasound technician detects abnormalities, further ultrasound exams may be ordered to follow the baby's development. There is still space available in your uterus and your baby will be active for periods at a time. Your baby may sit cross legged or turn somersaults.

Around this time, your baby becomes more sensitive to the outside world and shows her presence through powerful kicks and prods. The bones through which sound is passed to the inner ear have hardened and the parts of the brain that receives and processes nerve signals from the ears are developing. This means that your baby can hear now. Your baby will get used to familiar sounds, such as your heart beating, familiar voices, blood rushing through the umbilical cord and other daily routine sounds. Your baby will become startled if he hears a loud sound.

If you have a stethoscope at home, you can now hear the baby's heartbeat yourself.

2 more days and Im 19 weeks ... Then Tuesday I go to find out the sex ( Can't WAIT)!!!! I actually started feeling the baby move again on my birthday thursday the 9th, at dinner with my hubby I was so happy to feel him/her move again..for a while i wasn't feeling pregnant and didn't feel that my belly was that big?? everyone says i'm too small for being almost 19 weeks??But at night I feel huge...

Thank you debdaz 85. jacobbs girl, i get that to i have had that since i was 14 weeks, its normal to hve braxtion hicks early some people have them later on in pregancy depends on your body but if you concerned, ring Gp or MW .

So I think I'm having Braxton Hicks... My uterus gets really hard hurts a little to where I dont want to move much, then a few seconds later goes away it happens mostly when I'm laying down, should I be concerned?

hey all! I haven't posted in a while so I thought I would say a little something. I know I need to update my profile. School and 4 kids been keeping me so busy. However I have been keeping up with the posts. I love hearing how everyone is doing so I thought I would share as well. I think this pregnancy is flying by pretty fast for the most part. I been having insurance trouble so I haven't seen a dr. since week 10. I had an ultra sound then and everything was fine. The thing that makes me know everything is ok right now is that I feel him/her moving around a lot. I guess there are other things that can go wrong like tests and stuff so I need hubby to keep harping his insurance company until the issue is resolved. I also have a cold this weekend and it sucks cuz I don't want to take anything for it unless I have too. So for it is pretty minor, I just feel like blah and have been laying around in bed. I am little jealous everyone is finding out the sex of their little ones and I don't even have an apt to find out yet:(

really, you guys have felt & seen the kicks from the outside??? that is soooo awesome!!! my hubby rushes over everytime i feel the baby moving but he can never feel anything, i cant wait til the little pickle kicks strong enough for him to feel, i know he wants to feel it soooo badly and i feel bad for him cuz he tries so hard but gets nothing.....hopefully if some of you guys are experiencing it now i will get to soon.....got to hear the heartbeta for the first time yesterday, it was amazing...i couldnt stop giggling and i was making it hard for the doctor to time the pulse haha but we got there eventually, 156 beats per minute!!! it was the best thing ever, especially cuz we werent expecting it, we thought we were just there for our routine check...falling more and more in love each day! xxoo

hi all. ive been having some lower adominal pain this week. tuesday night it was on my right side. yesterday it was on my left side. the pain lasted no more than 5mins i was abit worried so i called my midwife. she said it would prob just be my uterus expanding and something about some ligaments. anyway just though id share this info. anyone else getting this? last day in week 18 today

Well I have been reading ont his web site for about 2months. I am 18 wks with my second i hope to find out what we will have on tuesday but this will be my first appt at this doctors office because i changed hospitals. I feel a little flutters here and there cant wait until see the kicks. I have names for a boy or a girl. my son is 3 he is so happy to be a big brother. My other half is so scared to have a girl he say he is so use to dealing with boy his whole family on his dads side is all boys with a few maybe three girls. Has anyones elses other half said this?

wow - it's great that other people are seeing + feeling their babies move from the outside! it started 2 days ago for me, i wasn't sure if it was too early at first but now i know that the movements are definately kicks + punches from baby! i love to feel them :)

Good morning everyone. So glad to be in week 18!! Got my first real kicks last night. Lying in the bath tub and he started kicking really hard - you could see my belly and even the water move!!! It was so exciting. My husband was able to come in and put his hand on my belly and feel it!!!

Had my sono. today and found out we are having another girl. She weighed in at 7 oz and was 6.75 in long from head to foot. Seems so tiny for already being so developed. She was moving around so much and began sucking her thumb. Its great to feel movements but I have begun to notice them becoming stronger over the last 2 weeks. I hope she isnt like my last baby kicking and pushing her feet up into my ribs. So far I havent had heartburn but I have had quite a bit of menstral-like cramping over the last month. My doc. says its due to the fact that I work on my feet 10hrs a day. She wants me to take maternity leave @ 30 weeks to avoid pre-term labor. Hope it goes well over the next 5 months.

I'm going for my scan next wednesday, and am determined not to find out the sex. As curious as I am I would rather a surprise. I have a gut feeling its a girl and I love the name Bonnie. I feel movement but it feels more like butterflies, is any one else feeling this way? I can't wait for the big kicks.

Amber- I am so glad everything is ok. I started to tear up reading your post, that would be so scary, I can't even imagine. I had a miscarriage a few years ago at 7 weeks and I was messed up over it for awhile, I can't imagine going through that or even a scare again!

About that weight gain question. I weighed 166 my first doctors appointment at 6 weeks. I went back at 15 weeks and I still weighed 166. I have been eating every two hours. The nurses told me it was fine. But it's all in my belly. I don't see how. My belly just keeps getting bigger and I don't gain anything.

I had such a scare last night. I went to the bathroom and there was blood. We went straight to the ER and after being there til 5 this morning everything was fine. They said the placenta had moved a little bit forward and that is what caused the bleeding but the baby is perfectly fine and there is nothing to worry about. I am on bed rest til monday but its just to be safe. I realized how much more and more i love this little baby, the whole way to the hospital i was crying my eyes out just hoping everything was ok.... sonn I will know what we're having :-)

about weight gain, Ive only gained about 6 lbs..I feel that I could have been about 4 lbs less befoe I got pg though...hope this all comes off in the end...I want to keep a slender body!!! boo...worried! also dont want to get to big, cause I waitress, and it will be awkward if Im all big...but I eat the way I should..so we will see.

Hello ladies...I'm from week 39! I'm here to give alittle advice. I know everyone is getting ready to do the nursery's for your lil ones. If you are looking for bedding don't go all out and think you have to have anything super expensive...I did and I feel like an idiot! I went to Ross and TJMaxx and Walmart and found really cute bedding for 1/2 if not more off of the price I paid for my bedding! And these places are also really go places to find really cute cheap clothes and blankets! And one more tip...register for free baby magazines...most have awesome coupons in them...Almost all have a 10% off any one item from Baby Depot...which is also a great store to get things from! Hope this helps you ladies! Goodluck...it's gonna be a bumpy ride!

I have gained only 3 lbs since being pregnant. I seem to be eating ok. The doc said my blood workup was ok. Is this weight gain (or lack of) ok for the baby. I don't ever feel hungry, I eat my three meals and snacks...and ...actually sleeping almost 6 hours straight at night right now. Anything to be concerned over? Also, is Ensure ok to drink? Due to be so sick my first tri, I had to drink them. Now, I crave that like ice cream (had to give up milk as it makes me sick right now still...)

LauraMaree, Im white, and my husband is Korean. He was adopted so his family is just like mine as far as traditions go and so forth...but we are really excited to see what baby will look like! Ive seen some asian/white children, and they are cute. Hes very handsome, 5'7 (heehee) Im 5'9 and fair, so were hoping baby gets his skin tone, and my legs!!!!!! hahaha well see.

YAY!!!! Week 18 today! Less than two weeks till our ultrasound - oct. 20th. I tried to make it sooner...but of course they say it's better to have that one LATER rather than SOONER. :( CANNOT wait to find out whether this little one is a boy or girl!!!! I've felt it move a few times...a couple times it was when I was pressing on my tummy. Is that ok? I was pressing kinda hard, I could feel where the baby was and it moved right under my hand! It was so cool! I don't think I can hurt the baby by pressing on my tummy...does anyone know for sure?

I just had a call from my doctor. The results of my blood test came back positive for spina bifida. I will have an u/s sometime next week with a specialist. I know that there's a lot of false positives for spina bifida, but I'm so worried ! I just want to cry all the time. And my bf doesn't want to talk about it until the u/s... I'm so sad.

It's a GIRL!!! The ultrasound appt was amazing although i can feel my little one move a tiny bit she was bouncing all around on the screen. She had her feet crossed then it looked as if she was sucking her thumb she was kicking both of her legs straight up. I felt the same way all of you did I could not wait until next week and that's why i called today and got an appt. They changed my dd again but the tech said this was the most accurate. Mar 13th. Good luck to those that haven't found out the sex I hope you get what you want because I sure did.

So I had my ultrasound appt scheduled for next week and I called today and changed it. I go in about an hour to find out the sex. I'll let you all know what it is. I tried to do what some of you suggested by drinking OJ umm yeah it just came up. I guess my stomach couldn't handle it.

chas5 - my maternity notes has a section in it about baby movements + said they can start anytime between 16-22 weeks, so i would try not to worry that you haven't felt anything yet, especially if it's your first. hope your little one starts to wiggle soon though, it's amazing :) if i have a meal or drink a glass of water + lay quietly for a while, baby starts to move. especially if i lie on my side first + then lay on my back. good luck!
