Born & Birth stories

Dates and numbers:
There are 91 days until your due date on April 08, 2009.
You are 189 days pregnant.
You are 6.2 months pregnant.
You are in your 7th month of pregnancy.
Your 1st trimester: July 02, 2008 to September 30, 2008. (0 - 12 weeks)
Your 2nd trimester: October 01, 2008 to January 13, 2009. (13 - 27 weeks)
Your 3rd trimester: January 14, 2009 to April 08, 2009. (28 - 40 weeks)

By this week, your baby's crown-to-rump length is approximately 9.2 inches. Remember, that is only from the top of his head to his bottom and does not include his leg measurements! Your baby weighs almost 2 pounds and is beginning to put on weight. Your uterus is about 2.5 inches above your bellybutton and you will continue to grow approximately 1 cm each week. If you have been eating a well-balanced diet, you probably have gained about 16-22 pounds so far. Because your baby has moved further up, you may get occasional pain underneath your ribs.

After a month of having his eyelids sealed shut, your baby begins to open his eyes again this week. Your baby's eyes are almost completely developed. Your baby's eyes are blue in the womb and may change colors later in life. This is true for all races because the pupils do not have their final color until a few months after birth. However, some babies are born with darker or lighter shades of blue. Your growing baby will continue to put on layers of fat until he is born. He is still lean at this point of the pregnancy though. By the time your baby is born, he will assume the typical newborn's plumpness. Your baby's skin will still be wrinkled and red, but the fat continues to fill the skin out.

Finger and toe nails continue to grow.

Blood vessels start to develop in the lungs to prepare the baby for life outside the uterus.

Your baby's blood circulation is completely functional. The umbilical cord system continues to grow and thicken as blood travels with considerable force through the body to nurture the baby. The placenta is now almost equal in size to the baby.

Even though it is still way too soon for your baby to be born yet, the chance of survival without severe abnormalities is now 70% provided it is born in a hospital.

guynn-for me a hospital is only a mile away. and the time it takes to get a bed ready for me in an emergency situation is the same if i took an ambulance or if i was already at the hospital. But like you said it is what is comfortable to you and that is the most important.

aprilmama - 42 minutes ago
I would like to do a homebirth but I too am a little scared. I know I could do it, most likely everything would be fine. I had both babes in tub at hospital, natural of course, but I like the security of hospital just in case something should happen. my hospital is 45mins away too. hope you ladies have a great experience though!

guynn - 1.1 hours ago
I am too nervous to do an at-home birth. I feel like I would be happier and just feel better at a hospital. It's been done for tons of other women and they turned out just fine... I also feel better knowing that if any type of complication were to come up that I'd already be at the hospital at least and they'd be able to get working on it right away. A friend of my boyfriend just did an at home birth and they had to end up rushing to the hospital as the baby has all sorts of problems. :0( He has blood/fluid in his lungs, and a bladder that can't really empty, etc etc. I feel so bad for them! But at the same time I just feel again, safer, being in a hospital just in case I guess.

MasonsMomma - 1.5 hours ago
Jana- Thanks! I am a bit nervous too...but I think that is natural!!

janamartz - 1.6 hours ago
MasonsMomma-Glad to hear you found someone you are comfortable with I am doing a homebirth too. I am very happy with my choice in a midwife and feel I am getting better care then a doctor. At first i was a bit scared of the natural birthing idea, but feel I am making the best choice for me and the baby. Jo-Mama as well is doing a homebirth with a midwife.

janamartz - 1.7 hours ago
I would just put her on and sing a song, like abc's or twinkle twinkle. Same thing I would do in a diaper change. The mother would blow on her belly to try to get her to pee sometimes. It was only for a few seconds. I knew right after naps she went pee so I tend to get her to go in the potty then and then I would using a praising voice like good girl.

MasonsMomma - 1.8 hours ago
I just got back from meeting with a midwife and am so happy! In the hour that I was there with her, I feel that she got to know me better that my doc has in the last 6 months! I have decided to have a natural birth at home...scary but true!! It was awesome and am actually looking forward to my next appt!

SunshineMama - 1.8 hours ago
janamartz~ so do you put them on the potty and hold them there talking about using the potty? how does this work?

janamartz - 1.9 hours ago
This might sound strange to some of you but one thing I plan on doing is introducing the potty early. Not sure exactly when, but somewhere between 4-6 months. I believe if you start a routine without forcing any outcome it will be easier to train when you really want your child potty trained. I did this with one child I worked with and before she left, 15 months, she was starting to tell me when she had to pee half the time. I would do it during diaper changes when we were home and nothing was forced. To her it was an everyday thing. I can't wait to try it on my own child.

MaddiesMommy - 1.9 hours ago
I see the conversation is on diapers today... very much different than food or orgasms... :) I just had a conversation with one of my daycare parents last week regarding diapers, and we both agreed Costco brand is by far the best for diapers and wipes!! You can even order them online, with a membership of course... I have been buying them by the case there since my daughter moved up to size 1, after a month or so... I did like pampers newborn diapers though... with the cut out for the umbilical cord and the netting to pull the moisture... but costco brand has even been better than huggies (the other brand we did for awhile) on leaking for overnight protection...

aprilmama - 2.2 hours ago
i started cloth on my second when he was 6mos. have only tried fuzzibunz and do like them. he goes through spells of blowouts, like right now so i use disposables as well. i dont have any small sized cloth diapers so i dont know. i might ask for some as gifts if anyone asks me what i want. i will use both cloth and disposable though if possible.

LoveChild - 2.4 hours ago
Strep B~When I had my daughter I had to get antibiotics through an IV and it took 4 hours.....for anyone wondering. I've watched many birthing shows and for the mothers that don't make it to the hospital in time, they treat the baby when they come out. :) All should be ok.

Jo-Mama - 2.4 hours ago
I am a total cloth diaper user now, but the first two weeks I used disposables because that meconium is really sticky and stains like crazy. I used 7th Generation because they have no bleach or chlorine in them.

SunshineMama - 2.6 hours ago
mariela~ I registered for everything that I thought I would need, Babies R Us has a 10% off coupon that you receive 2 weeks before your due date that you can use to buy whatever is left on your registry. I figured if the bigger stuff that DH and I will buy is on the registry then we can get the discount.

janamartz - 2.6 hours ago
I am from Seattle so the rain cover is something you have to have here. It works well in cold weather too.

raquelsbaby - 2.6 hours ago
I wish I had a walmart near me so I could try their brand diapers and wipes. My sister recommended Huggies for my boy... but every baby bottom is different! Ive done my registry already, but thats a good idea janamartz for a rain cover for my stroller!! Im gonna go onto my registry right now and look for one of those! I put on those little hooks too, to hand bags or purses.. they looked helpful.

SunshineMama - 2.7 hours ago
haligirl~ I love your baby shower theme...what a wonderful idea!

janamartz - 2.8 hours ago
oh yeah and a co-sleeper as well.

janamartz - 2.8 hours ago
mariela-As for what I have on my registry I have stroller accessories (such as a rain cover, cup holder, etc), onesies (you can never have enough, in my opinion), tub, long sleeve sleepers, sheets, car seat, changing pad, bottles, bouncer, and breast pump accessories. I am getting hand me down clothes, crib, dresser. Hope that helps you.

janamartz - 3 hours ago
I plan on doing a mixture of cloth and disposables. I don't plan on stocking on the disposables since I have seen many families do this and then have a ton they can't use or return because their kids got major rashes with them. Once I know then I plan to stock a bit more.

haligirl - 3 hours ago
MelissaLMoore is right about Strep B. Antibiotics are just prophylaxis (precautious preventive measures). It's part of the normal flora but still is not taken lightly bc Group B Streptococcus bacteria can cause the most common pneuomia (may lead to meningitis) of the newborn and up to 3 months old. Even if the mother gets prophylactic antibiotics or not in time... antibiotic to the newborn in the hospital is 100% curable before symptoms even occur. It's more concerning with Herpes Simplex or AIDS - that warrants a cesarean rather than vaginal delivery and ongoing medication to baby.

My baby shower theme is Buddha Belly, I love my pet name from my DP!I will have serene calming lotus shaped votive candles, Asian finger foods, and henna painted on my belly at the shower. I love Pregalishus's idea to register with MyRegistry.com for ALL my items under one link! On my baby registry I am asking for a belly casting kit and lots of Gdiapers and refills and baby wipes mostly; the more expensive items I don't expect my few friends to get, but perhaps my parents or my DP might get for me the Graco Playard and Graco high chair in cherry wood, I definately want the Moby wrap baby carrier; the only toys on my wishlist is the Baby Einstein Neptune gym, Sophie the Giraffe teether, and crib teddy bear that has nature, lullabye, and mother's heartbeat sounds:) Things I've already gotten by myself is the stroller, infant carseat and adapter, boppy pillow (I sleep with ALL the time), some funny/cute onesies, and diaper bags. I hope to be able to breastfeed so I'll wait to get the pump & bottles as soon as I know I and baby are able to breastfeed.

MelissaLMoore - 3.5 hours ago
Beluga: Start with newborn size. They have the cutest cut out notch for the umbilical cord. They don't stay in that size long though. My kids stayed in size 3 the longest.

MelissaLMoore - 3.6 hours ago
Cloth diapers..I would LOVE to try them, but with 3 kids, I really don't think I will have time to wash them. Heck, I do good now to get one load a day in.

Beluga - 3.6 hours ago
I forgot about the diapers!!!! OMG!! Thanks for reminding me, so I can include this item in my shopping list.... And thank all for your input!!!... I have a question... Do I have to buy different brands to see which one the baby will like???? Or should I stock on one brand??? What size should I buy????

MelissaLMoore - 3.6 hours ago
Try not to worry...first time moms are usually in labor for like 12 hours. Trust me, you will know when it starts and will be at the hospital in plenty of time.

preggerpants - 3.7 hours ago
On the subject of diapers, have any of you considered cloth? I want to use them and wondered if any moms have a favorite?

mntnwmn477 - 4.1 hours ago
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has tested positive for Strep B. I asked everybody I knew if they ever heard of it and nobody knew a thing. It was really scary! I was put on antibiotics already during like my 12th week or so and I guess I'll have to be tested again later. Hopefully I won't test positive for it again. It seems like such a hassle. I mean, if my water breaks and the baby wants to come out like right then or within an hour or two, how am I suppose to get the recommended IV dose, which they say is a four hour interval? It just seems complicated and scary.

sefones - 4.2 hours ago
ok so heres what I found out....both pampers and luvs are made by P&G company, but think of it like soda....coke and dr.pepper are made by cocoa cola company but still different flavors lol, thats the best i came up with, personally i had no problems with luvs and im a huge pampers fan!!! to me for some reason here in Az the prices of luvs has skyrocketed and with pampers coupons i pay less for pampers then luvs and currently my little guy rashes out in anything thats not pampers.... but i can use walmarts brand parentchoice wipes on him and hes fine...go figure..just like each baby is an individual so is each babys bottoms lmao

sefones - 4.3 hours ago
april, ive heard that too, but dont know any truth in it...hmm im gonna look it up and tell ya what i find

aprilmama - 4.3 hours ago
gosh, this baby hasnt stopped moving all day! i sometimes wonder if i should be worried, that maybe baby is tangled up or something and trying to wiggle free from the cord. anyone else worry about that? and i can now feel babys movements when i am standing up doing stuff. even just last week, i usually onely felt baby when i was sitting or lying. crazy baby. i will probably start having dreams about arms and legs sticking way out! i usually do at somepoint.

sefones - 4.3 hours ago
my dr tests for strep b for each pregnancy but not till like 32-34 weeks, so maybe yours will, but hasent yet, or did he say he wouldent? i was positive for my first, so when second one came at about 20 weeks he put me on a dose of antibiotics and by the time i delivered it was neg, and with my 3rd i was positive, but its really no big deal they just give you two doses of antibiotics through ur iv four hours apart. at least thats what was done this past april with my son

aprilmama - 4.4 hours ago
i like the smell too melissalmoore! i did notice the last package of luvs had that pampers smell. ive actually heard that luvs are made by pampers. i dont really know, just rumors.

MelissaLMoore - 4.4 hours ago
No offense to anyone's OB or personal choices. I was not comfy with that OB anyway. Anyway, I don't have a medical degree, so to each is on.

MelissaLMoore - 4.5 hours ago
That is odd. However, I did have one OB that gave all his patients antibiotics for this and never tested them. He said it was easier on everyone. Incidentally, the man was a blubbering idiot. For my anatomy scan at 20 weeks, he took 10 minutes, said it was all there, and turned off the ultrasound machine. I changed OB's the next week.

LoveChild - 4.6 hours ago
That's odd.....my office isn't going to check me for strep b again because I had it with the first one. They're just going to treat me as I have it.

MelissaLMoore - 4.6 hours ago
I buy newborn diapers on my off weeks from buying diapers for my 2 year old. He will be 3 in May, so he needs to potty train ASAP! I like White Cloud now that my son is older, but I love the way Pampers smell!

MelissaLMoore - 4.6 hours ago
I researched and learned that Group B strep is a naturally occuring bacteria that live in your colon and around your rectum. Sometimes it has a growth spurt and spreads to surrounding areas such as the vagina. This is normal and usually does not cause problems, unless a baby is coming through there. I was positive with first child, negative with second. This is the layman's version of what I have researched.

almostmommyof3 - 4.6 hours ago
I am lucky here in TX, Luvs are about $3 cheaper than Pampers and Huggies. With my girls, Pampers and Huggies both gave the horrible rashes (no matter how many times a day I changed them) and Huggies leaked when they started to crawl. We did go ahead and buy the Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers for when our little guy is born, and I am stocking up on Luvs size 1 and 2 right now. The only thing that I am strange about it the wipes...we are buying Pampers Sensitive and they are more than the diapers! lol

LoveChild - 4.7 hours ago
I can't help with the registery because I didn't do one before and won't be doing one this time. I let everyone buy whatever they want.......it's up to me to get the rest.

aprilmama - 4.8 hours ago
bandt- that was funny, its good laugh. diapers, well for newborns it just didnt seem to matter for mine. cheap ones seemed to work just as well on both of mine. i go through spells where i think i need the good ones and buy the pampers and huggies and when im feeling broke i buy walmart. once they are toddling around, the more expensive ones seem to stay up better and dont sag so much. i do like luvs and currently using them for my 2yr old son. the jumbo size packs are only like a dollar cheaper than the pampers and pampers always has coupons. its cheaper for luvs though if you go with the big boxes, usually like $5 cheaper. I havent stocked up yet for baby. with my first, we bought diapers everytime we went to the store and had a whole closet full by the time she was born, then with the next and this one i was already buying diaperss and didnt feel like stocking up.

LoveChild - 4.8 hours ago
Does anyone know exactly what strep b is? The doctor said it was common and a lot of women have it. It's wierd that it's only an issue when preggers and not treated otherwise.....?

mariela - 4.9 hours ago
***Hey, what are some items y'all put on your registry? I just started one, never had a baby before, and i'm just curious what other people have asked for.***

mariela - 5 hours ago
courtneyyylove- I'm huge too. I've been feeling sooo self conscious about it. Ppl are always asking if i'm having twins or if i'm due real soon. Its annoying :(

mariela - 5 hours ago
bandt- ha ha, that was too funny! ;)

sefones - 5.2 hours ago
bandt- lmao that was a good one!!!!!!!!

sefones - 5.3 hours ago
ok girls, just got back from drs visit, he grounded me from chinese food, I had it last night for dinner and was swollen up like a baloon today, he picked on my weight(10lbs in 4 weeks) lmao im realy just not caring right now. I start going evry 2 weeks now, I cant believe its time for that already and in two weeks im doing my glucose test...yuck!!!! other then that all is well, blood pressure, pee and babys hb was all really good!!! she had to try 3 different times to get heartbeat. he would move every time she was almost done counting so she would have to start over...it was funny!!! onto other topics, I used to love luvs but here they have become only like a dollar cheaper then pampers so might as well spend the extra and i have never had luck with walmarts generics...not only do i have 3 of my own kids but hubby and i do foster care and have had almost 40 babies come and go so really luvs was the way to go until they jacked up their prices(i live in az) but with my last baby, all i could put him in was pampers sensitive care other wise he got a rash, and those diapers are sooo awesome but only go up to size 2. they have a yellow line on poutside of diaper that runs from front to back and when baby pees or poops even a little, the line turns blue so no having to peek in side of diaper lol, they made middle night changings so easy. but everyone finds the kind of diaper that they love so if this is your first baby, just experiment and see what you prefer. as far as hospital stay, i had all vagional births and with my last one (april 11 2008) I had him at 5:25 am on Friday and went home Sat afternoon, but because i was b strep positive, normally they keep baby 2 days but with my history of caring for foster babies my ped was fine letting me take my baby home.

bandt - 5.4 hours ago
Should a child witness a childbirth? Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-yr old girl, to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby. Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked. Mommy pushed and pushed and after a little while, Connor was born. The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry. The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-yr old what she thought about what she had just witnessed. Kathleen quickly responded, 'He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place......smack his ass again!'

LoveChild - 5.4 hours ago
You're not alone! People keep asking me if I'm sure there is not twins in there.....I got that with my 1st too.....ppl. never shut their mouth.

Mommysoon2bof3 - 5.6 hours ago
Ahh..Poop everywhere?? I feel so bad for you Melissa! Being pregnant and cleaning up poop sucks!

courtneyyylove - 5.6 hours ago
