At this point of your pregnancy, your baby is approximately 4.3 to 4.6 inches long and weighs 2.8 ounces. Not only is your baby growing, your uterus and placenta continue to grow to accommodate the growing baby inside of you! Just six weeks ago, your uterus weighed about 5 ounces. This week it now weighs 8.75 ounces! The amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby is increasing and there is about 7.5 ounces of fluid. You will easily be able to feel your uterus approximately three inches below your navel.

This is an important week for testing and you will most likely have an AFP test done. This is a harmless blood test that is done to detect abnormalities such as Down's syndrome or spina bifida. This is a non-invasive test and it carries no risk to your developing baby. Most doctors will offer the test, but in most cases it is completely optional.

Your milk glands start production at this time and this causes some tenderness and swelling in early pregnancy. Your veins will become more visible because there is an increased amount of blood flowing to the breasts.

Five and a half inches tall and only six ounces in weight. The child can grasp with his hands, kick, or even somersault.

At this time, your baby is holding her head erect. Because her muscles are developing, she can make some faces now. Your baby is able to squint, frown and open its mouth. There is enough calcium in the bones that they will show up on an x-ray. Your baby's fingernails are well formed now and the legs are longer than the arms. Because your baby is moving well now, you may begin to feel his movements! Some women say that the early movements feel like gas bubbles or a slight flutter. If you have not yet felt the baby move, don't worry. Fetal movements are usually felt between the 16th and 20th week of pregnancy.

You may feel your heart beating 'louder'. This is because there is a lot more blood in your body than normal. (about 20-25% more)

I just realized my belly 'popped' today. I didn't understand really what people meant by that until now. So now, it looks like a bigger beer belly than before :). I am so grateful for every pregnancy symptom! I love my little one!

hi I saw my doc yesterday and go a 1 in 124 chance for downs:( any one else have this kind of news?? I don't want amnio cause of the m/c risk so maybe my ultrasound may confirm it?

jtrn- they can tell by ultrasound as early as 15 weeks although sometimes they wont that early because it is not as precise. If you are going in for an ultrasound anyway you might want to ask. if they can tell they will probably let you know.

Hi....just wondering, does anyone know how early the sex of the baby can be determined and by what method? I know at 18-20 wks by US the tech can usually tell but are there other ways also or can they tell by US at 16 wks? Im going on Monday for an MD and US appt and I wanted to see if they can tell yet!! Cant help but be anxious to know, though I think it is a boy!!

finallyamommy......its normall to have more of a discharge, might be tmi but i have a heavier darker one and my littleones fine, heard heart beat yesterday, but i have thrush alot so i might have it due to that, if your worried y not just phone ur doc and im sure they will let you know, aslong as ure not havign bad cramps and full on bleeding im sure you will be fne, i bleed for my 1st month of pregnancy, hope your ok, dont worry to much jus give the doc a wee bell much love xxx

yay felt real kicks this morning. it gave me such a fright and then it kicked and moved around for about an hour, and then again this evening for about an hour. the kicks are soooo strong it was swesome. i could also see my belly move where it kicked my stomach was so freaky.must be a strong lil one

It is so amazing how different 2 pregnancies can be. I never felt my first baby move till about 20 weeks i felt the kicks, never any flutters. This baby i felt move since 13 weeks. Now its turning into harder kicks already. The baby has been so active lately. Its amazing but I also do find it to tickle at times. I just cant wait to find out if its a little prince or another little princess!

I have a condition called vulvodynia which i cant take my medication for, due to my pregnancy. I have an appointment with gyn doc on 7th Dec but i'm so uncomfortable. I guess I shouldn't be surprise. I was very sick for first three months. I'm eating plenty of fruit but in evenings just want soup and bread!! :S I've also gone from a UK D cup to an F so thought I would have gained at least a few pounds. I'm kind of relieved really as I'm usually about 120 pounds and struggled with my weight so don't want to balloon!

your belly is pushed out farther but it's not muscle or fat so there really isn't a reason to have gained weight in your belly area, and the baby itself only weighs about .5 lb. gained weight at this point could partly be breast tissue, fluid increase, maternal fat stores, larger uterus, etc. is you haven't really gained any weight it's ok!

amyandflump. sorry forgot to mention, you say you look pregnant. i look huge yet i have lost weight, it sounds like you have actually lost weight from other areas of your body while at the same time put on weight around your middle. people dont believe me when i say i have lost weight as i look about 6mths pregnant

amyandflump. i have been weighing myself every week since i found out at 4 wks and i have lost 10llb's , i have been sick about once a week, but i am guessing that if you have been picky about eating , choosing some things over others then you may have eaten less than you usually do. that coupled with possibly of vomiting then it is easy to not have put on any weight. after all the baby weighs 3 oz approx plus 5oz for the uterus, this is nothing really. dont worry you will soon pick up. if not, speak to your midwife. you sound like you area sensible eater.

Had my week 16 midwife appointment today. I am so full of cold it's unreal! I haven't weighed myself since I found out I was pregnant and so the midwife weighed me today and I'm exactly the same!! I can't believe it! I have a huge belly already and am in maternity clothes! How has this happened?

WOW... What are everyones bellies looking like? I have not taken a picure of mine since I was 11 weeks and I knew that I was getting bigger but a girl at work today took a picture of my belly and OH MY GOSH, it is soo much bigger than I tohught it was. I think looking down on it doesn't make it look that big but I look really preggo in the picture. I will put it up sometime today so you can look if you want. Is anyone elses bellies looking much bigger lately?

THE HEADACHES I GET SOMEDAYS ARE AWFULL...I CANT DO ANYTHING but a good night sleep is what seems to cure it, my doctor told me you get the headache because ur tired, and then it gets worse if ur at work n cant sleep, or if u start stressing over taking medication for it he told em the only cure is sleep!! and i find it helps he he i cnt wait to see if everyones right about my boy! altough i do feel a girl so i wonder y no one else does has anyoen already found out what they are having? x

Christinalynn----It is very normal for your heart to beat faster. Your heart is working overtime right now. During pregnancy it pumps 50% more blood through. Your hormones are what's making you dizzy. If you are concerned just give your Dr. a call, but I'm pretty sure he/she will say that it's normal. I was having irregular heartbeats at the begining of my pregnancy. They have gone away but the Dr. said it was normal. Best of luck.

thanks to all who left some feedback on my belly pic. it really does make me feel better. :) yesterday was rough for me. i ended up going home from work early with the worse headache in the world! i slept for about 4 hours yesterday afternoon and it helped a little. after a long nights rest my headache was finally gone. thankfully! um, i'm finally out of 'regular' jeans. lol. i haven't broken down and bought any maternity clothes yet, just been wearing yoga pants; which are a life saver. :} i see that some of you have guesses on what youre having. i'm pretty sure i'm having a BOY. that's the only type of feeling that i've had. we'll see, i cant wait to find out. we'll get to know right before christmas! gonna be a great gift!

Just saw your question about the sore throat (Im an ER nurse) without using medication, warm water mixed with salt to gargle is a good short term fix. You can use the numbing spray also....If it continues over more than 2-3 days, you notice a bad smell or white/yellow patches in the back of your throat, see your MD....strep is a possiblity though most cases are viral and have to run their course on their own...good luck, hope u feel better!!

little1, At my last appointment my midwife said the heartbeat was in the 140's and that it was a boy. I looked at her and said that's what you said about my daughter. My mom and sister think I am having a boy. I just don't know!

Advice ladies...I was VERY sick! Terrible headache very nausous. If this happens to u get lots and lots of sleep I slept for like 15 hours b4 I finally felt better. I could eat I couldn't drink I couldn't put anything near my mouth and just standing was HARD work. If you start to feel it at all plz go to sleep don't let urself get any worse it was HORRIBLE!!

babyfoster - mention your lack of motivation and not wanting to get dressed to your doctor. probably even worth ringing them about it if you are still feeling that way. That's what it says in one of the books i'm reading by the Mayo Clinic.

went to the midwife yesterday and heard the heart rate again, such a great sound, a healthy 155bpm, cant wait to find out if boy or girl. we have to wait to around 19 to 20 weeks here in nz ....gutted cause so many of you know or will find out soon, the suspense is killing me .....
