Born & Birth stories

Dates and numbers:
There are 0 days until your due date on February 10, 2010.
You are 280 days pregnant.
You are 9.2 months pregnant.
You are in your 10th month of pregnancy.
Your 1st trimester: May 07, 2009 to August 05, 2009. (0 - 12 weeks)
Your 2nd trimester: August 06, 2009 to November 18, 2009. (13 - 27 weeks)
Your 3rd trimester: November 19, 2009 to February 11, 2010. (28 - 40 weeks)

You are definitely considered full-term now and you are probably anticipating the arrival of your newborn. The crown-to-rump length of your baby is around 15 inches and your baby is now about 21.5 inches long total. Your baby weighs about 7.5 pounds and your uterus is about 8 inches above the top of your bellybutton.

Your official due date will be sometime this week and you probably have a prenatal check up this week to check for labor progress. Try to stay calm while you are waiting for labor to begin. You should have all of your bags packed and ready to go and your birth plan should be in place. Your labor coach should know what your wishes are and you should be able to get in touch with your labor coach at all times. Use false labor contractions to practice breathing and relaxation techniques that you will use during the actual labor itself.

Your baby continues to move further down the birth canal and this is measured in stations. Station describes the degree to which the presenting part of the baby has descended into the birth canal. The 0 point is a bone landmark in the pelvis, the starting point of the birth canal. If your baby's head is at a -2 station, it means the head is higher inside of you than if your baby were at a +2 station.

After your baby is born, she will be weighed and measured. Your baby may cry loudly or she may be dazed from medications. The doctor will suction your baby's mouth and throat with an aspirator. The nurses will dry her off and place a hat on her head to help keep her warm. Security tags will be placed around her arms and ankles and your baby will be swaddled in a blanket. You will be given the chance to hold your baby right after you have delivered. Shortly after, the nurses generally take the baby to the nursery for a bath and other routine procedures. Your baby will be given Apgar scores according to her condition at 1 and 5 minutes of birth. A total of 10 points can be scored. A score of 10 is unusual and most babies receive scores of 7, 8 or 9. A baby with a low 1-minute score might need to be resuscitated and usually the 5 minute score is much higher after he has time to adjust to life outside of the uterus. APGAR SCORE:
*Heart rate of baby-If your baby does not have a heart rate a score of 0 is given. If the baby's heart rate is less than 100 bpm, a score of 1 is given. If the heart rate is over 100 bpm, a score of 2 is given.
*Respiratory effort of the baby- If your baby is not breathing, a score of 0 is given. If breathing is slow and irregular, a score of 1 is recorded. If your baby is crying and breathing well, a score of 2 is recorded.
*Baby's muscle tone-If your baby's arms and legs are limp and flabby, the score is 0. If some movement is observed and the arms and legs bend a little, a score of 1 is recorded. A score of 2 is given to babies that are active and moving.
*Reflex irritability of the baby-If your baby does not respond to stimulus, a score of 0 is given. If there is a small reflex when the baby is stimulated, a score of 1 is recorded. If your baby responds vigorously when stimulated, 2 points are given.
*Baby's color- If your baby is blue or pale, a score of 0 is given. A score of 1 is given if your baby's body is pink and the arms and legs are blue. If your baby's entire body is pink, a score of 2 is recorded.

At the time of birth, the baby has a total of 300 bones. Some bones will fuse together later, which is why an adult has only 206 bones.

Almost there! Did you know that we also have a month by month calendar for babies? You can find it in the menu under `Babies`: Month by month

Vickie....are we in labor together? I'm not sure if this is the start or not! I've been having them since like 2 or 3. I just had 3 painful ones in a row. Not bad, but certainly not pain free. They start at the top of my uterus and then wrap around toward my back. Almost feels like gas? I tried going to the loo but that didn't result in anything so I'm hoping and praying that this is the start! EEEEEEE lol. I'm so excited. Trying not to get my hopes up though.

Cjg2010 - 3.5 hours ago

vickieb - 4.6 hours ago
congrats to you mommies who just delivered!! :o)

vickieb - 4.6 hours ago
well i've been having these contractions (that i can't seem to time because they're pretty much constant) since about noon, and then tonight i saw for the FIRST time some pink and brownish spotting. that's the first sign of anything down there, and i'm 40+6. i've been telling myself all day these are just BH but i am starting to wonder bcuz they just won't quit, and some of them hurt. going to lay down and see what happens.... my poor family is on stand-by in florida with an 8-hour drive. i don't know what to tell them!

nicki90 - 5.1 hours ago
o my gosh i am still in shock at how many girls have delievered- and im sad for u girls who dont have their babies yet- BUT YOUR TIME WILL COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reeseplus1 - 5.6 hours ago
Proud to announce Emery Lynne was born 2-9 at 9:32am. 8lbs 15oz 20 inches long. Very fast delivery that started with mild contractions (so there is still hope for everyone!). Make sure to not wait too long to go into the hospital or you might get there too late for pain killers! Story to come, Labor dust to all, I'm thinking about you all!

cjsmommysarah - 6.5 hours ago
I absoutly LOVE A Baby Story and all the ones on Discovery Health and it figures that when I actually am pregnant, I cant watch them! I should have just splurged on cable before, I just dont want to deal with another thing right now :( So its always movies and Hulu.com has been amazing for some shows....I can keep up with Greys Anatomy at least! Newmomeve - I would do the same thing if I were in Boston! Plus in the city with the snow....should be nice and relaxing ;) My aunt is in Douglas in the middle of the woods and she told me not to worry, that my uncle would drive the plow the whole way here :) lol I never realized how great he was. It sucks how a tragedy brings people closer together. Thankful for it but not the way I wanted :)

2ndtimemommmy - 6.5 hours ago
And congrats to Jeffswife and Memers too!

2ndtimemommmy - 6.6 hours ago
So me and my brain-dead preggo brain... I was making Chicken Jalfrezi for dinner (it's an East Indian curry), and the recipe called for 1tbsp of curry powder, well I accidentally grabbed the chili powder... It's still finishing up cooking on the stove, but OMG, it's going to be HOT! So here's hoping the myth about spicy food inducing labor is true, because that's about the only thing that's convincing me to actually eat it! DH is excited, he rarely gets spicy food, but needless to say, DS is having hot dogs tonight! Congrats Nicki!

mandykat760 - 6.6 hours ago
Congrats!

Memers - 6.9 hours ago
Hey ladies, Had my baby girl! Olyvia Jo. She was 6lbs 12oz. and 20 inches long. Hope all you ladies follow.

jeffswife - 7.4 hours ago
We had the baby! The sex was a surprise and its a girl!!! Jazmyne Geneva Morgan was born on 2-6-10 by emergency c-section. She weighed 7.4 lbs and was 20.25 inches long. Birth story up soon!

BabySaunders - 7.4 hours ago
Awww yay! congrats Nicki! Well Vickie you might go before me. Mine have slowed down. They've gotten a little tiny tad stronger, but they're about 10 mins apart now. Think my body is just warming up for the big day :)

mandy125 - 7.5 hours ago

newmomeve - 8.8 hours ago
I think 02.10.2010 is an awesome birthdate. So is 02.12.10. 2.14.10 would be fine too. Oh please please just don't let me go till 2.15!!!!

newmomeve - 8.8 hours ago
BabySaunders, if you lay down for a nap and got up and they are still happening, then it may very well be early labor!! Make sure you stay hydrated and just take it easy. Reserve your energy, cause if it's the real thing, you'll need it for labor!

vickieb - 9 hours ago
OMG, me too!!!!! i've been telling people the same thing about that date! 210 is one of those numbers that pops up a lot for me, so all along i thought it would just be crazy if she shows up that day. plus, it's just a cool birthdate. lol. i hope at least one of us gets it!! keep us posted. :-)

BabySaunders - 9.3 hours ago
Hmmm...well I just woke up from a short nap where I was laying down and they haven't stopped. That'd be soooo great if this was early labor! I was telling my hubby how it'd be cool to have him on 2-10-2010. We're both really into numbers :)

vickieb - 9.3 hours ago
wow, well i think i should take a shower & lay down then! this has gone on for about 5 hours now. thanks for the info!!

newmomeve - 9.7 hours ago
vickieb -- I had what you are describing for about 8 hours on Sunday. My doula said this is 'practice labor'. Practice labor is not painful, and the contractions can be very short, like 30 seconds, but happen frequently. If it stops when you take a shower, bath, or lay down, then it is practice. If it becomes more intense to the point where you can't talk through them, they are lasting 90 seconds to a minute, and they don't stop when you change position, then you are in true early labor!

tinabambina22 - 10 hours ago
I am also having consistent pressure that I THINK may be contractions. Man oh man....and my back hurts. Ran errands in the morning and cleaned house all afternoon. Good luck ladies - here's to hoping!

irishgirl44 - 10.6 hours ago
ok ladies good luck to you labouring ladies cant wait to wake up tomorrow morning to hear who had their babies and who is still with me... x

vickieb - 11.4 hours ago
yeah, i can't really say mine hurt either. but they are very intense and sometimes it's hard to breathe! and i can't really time mine because they don't really ever let go... it's so weird. i do NOT want to get my hopes up that this means anything, lol. (but that's easier said than done.)

BabySaunders - 11.5 hours ago
Me too vickieb! They dont hurt though. Just happening like every 5 mins or so. It's kinda fun watching.

vickieb - 11.6 hours ago
i am having constant braxton hicks type contractions today, they just will not let up. my sister said her labor started that way. hmmm.

irishgirl44 - 11.8 hours ago
babyknight ....thanks for that just reading that now.. and watchinga doco on birthd haha

irishgirl44 - 11.9 hours ago

babybaker82 - 11.9 hours ago

vickieb - 12.1 hours ago
great report, newmomeve! progress!!

newmomeve - 12.2 hours ago
Hey gals, just came back from my 40.5 week appointment (I am 40 + 4 today). Now I am a finger tip dilated and still 50% effaced. She was able to do a sweep, so that was exciting. Everything is fine, heartbeat, position, etc. She suggested if I am still pregnant Friday (41 weeks) to go do a more intense acupuncture treatment with more labor inducing points. So maybe I'll try that. I would really like to have the baby by Valentine's Day!!!

tinabambina22 - 13 hours ago
Niki90 - just read your last post and got so excited for you I started crying. Amazing how little updates like that can give us hope. You go girl!!

babyknight - 13.6 hours ago
IG44-I've been debating over the idea of induction since my Dr. brought it up last week but I totally agree with newmomeve after 42 weeks a Dr. will induce as the risk is greater for poor outcomes but anytime before that our babies should be fine. Here is a website that I found very informative about induction http://www.bellybelly.com.au/articles/birth/induction-of-labour-to-induce-or-not-induce

mamasoontobe - 13.7 hours ago
Thanks Vickieb! It is incredibly frustrating, just hoping and praying goes well in the end! Thankfully I've been through the nesting phase already and has everything ready to go so I am able to just lay back and relax!

irishgirl44 - 13.8 hours ago
nicki waiting anxiously for your update x

irishgirl44 - 13.8 hours ago
thanks new momeve. i know you are right. i am just in a split frame of mine as my hip is just agony.. walking is just so painful trying to get a glass of water impossible. ill try hold out .. just didnt know what to do.. thanks for helping..

newmomeve - 14.4 hours ago
IG44- as for induction, I think you just turned 40 weeks yesterday, right? Well, obviously everyone has their own opinion, but mine is to wait and not push for induction. As long as you are healthy and the baby is healthy, then everything is OK. Normal pregnancy is 38 - 42 weeks. The 'due date' just happens to be the middle part of that. Here is the States there are a lot of inductions (I think we had this conversation before). It has a lot to do with our health insurance system and liability/ lawsuits, etc. But if the docs/ midwives are saying you and baby are healthy, then there really isn't a medical need for it. Plus, if you induce before you are "ready", the process can be very long and painful, and can easily end in a c-section. Around 41 weeks you should have a non-stress test to look at the heart rate and amniotic fluid level. As long as you are drinking your two liters a day, the fluid level should be fine. If you are approaching 41.5 or 42 weeks, this is a time to discuss induction with your doctor, as a baby past this time is at greater risk. The placenta ages and doesn't provide as good nutrients, and the baby gets bigger! But for now, my recommendation would be just to relax as best you can and enjoy your last few days before mommyhood. I know it's hard, but think of that little bub inside. He's so happy and cozy and loving life right now. He'll come when he is ready. And don't worry about your cervix being closed now. That can literally change OVER NIGHT!!

pampam - 14.4 hours ago
Good Luck Nicki

newmomeve - 14.4 hours ago
I'm in Boston! The hospital is normally 25 minutes away without traffic, but in a snow storm it can take up to 3 hours (one time last year that's how long it took to get from here to there). I hope you're right and it won't be too bad, but we're gonna do the hotel either way. We haven't gone anywhere or done anything since our honeymoon 18 months ago, so this will be a little 'baby moon' if s/he doesn't come till later in the week. I am excited for it now!!

mandykat760 - 14.5 hours ago
My dh hates tue nights haha all the prego shows are on discovery health. haha

mandy125 - 14.5 hours ago
Anyone watching Baby Story? God they've made it seem like a C-section is the end of the world. These people need to relax!!!

cjsmommysarah - 14.7 hours ago
newmomeve - what state are you in? Im in RI and they are saying the storm isnt looking too bad....I hope Im looking at a good weather site as I dont have cable or a stupid box right now (so no TV). My aunt lives 1 hr away in MA and needs to be here! lol
