During the second month of life, your baby may be settling into a routine. You have both had time to recover from the birth and are getting to know each other well. You might still feel overwhelmed and stressed at times, and that is normal.
Your baby's movements are becoming smoother and less jerky. Although he can hold his head up briefly, he still needs your support. While on her tummy, your baby can probably hold her head up slightly. Continue to lay her on her belly for tummy time throughout the day. Babies like to look at different patterns, colors and textures as their eyesight is improving. Because your baby may be rolling over in one direction, it is imperative that you do not ever leave your little one unattended. Even if she has not rolled over yet, one day she will surprise you!
You will be rewarded for all of your dedication this month with smiles of appreciation. Your baby is beginning to smile socially and likes when you smile back at him. Your baby likes to see you excited and the more you interact with him, the more fun he will be for you. Praise your baby for learning a new skill and show him he makes you proud! Some babies begin to coo-make the same sounds back to him. Play cooing games with your baby to help him develop language skills.
Babies have a strong desire to suck and sometimes feeding does not meet their need. Encourage your baby to suck on a fist, hand or pacifier to learn to soothe themselves. Many babies suck on their thumbs or hands before they are even born. Often times, babies enjoy sucking on pacifiers. Be careful not to overuse them and never tie them aorund the baby's neck.
While crying is totally normal, some babies will develop colic. Colic occurs when a baby continuously cries and can not be comforted. Continue to comfort your baby the best you can and ask for suggestions from the doctor. Medication may be necessary. Accept help from others and take the time for yourself that you deserve and need. While it can be challenging and tiresome, colic usually settles down around 3-4 months. Babies need caregivers to be patient, gentle and attentive.
Babies hands have unclenched and will remain open most of the time now. Encourage your baby to reach for objects and grasp ahold of them. Let your baby experience different sizes, colors and textures to optimize learning.
Your baby will be getting his first series of shots at this time. It is very important that you have your child immunized against serious diseases. Not only is it important for your child's health, it is critical for the well-being of the community. Giving your baby tylenol before he receives his shots will decrease the pain. Vaccines do have some risks and side effects, but are much less severe than the actual disease.
Your baby may be going a bit longer in between feedings. Most breastfed babies can go about 3 hours in between each feeding and bottlefed babies are feeding closer to every 4 hours. You may have been told that if you add solids or cereal to baby's bottle, they will sleep better. This may be tempting, but it should not be done. Breastmilk or formula should be the only source of nutrition at this time. Babies at this age are still to young to start on solids.
Continue to play with your baby and teach her about the world around her. Set her on your lap facing outwards so that she can see more. Talk to your baby, sing to your baby and tell her all about what you are doing. Babies love to listen and this is how they learn. During playtime, sit her so that she is facing you. Stick your tongue out and see what she does. Babble back and forth. Make sure that you read to your baby. Babies do not necessarily care what you read to them, they just like hearing your voice and seeing the brightly colored pictures.

- Your baby may gurgle, coo, grunt and hum to show her feelings. Coo and gurgle back and talk to her face to face.
- Some babies may squeal and laugh.
- Recognizes parents and will calm down when he hears the parents voices.
- Your baby listens to and enjoys music. Use her awake times to stimulate her sensory development. Sing to her and play music. Vary what your baby hears.

Carmens~ This is my second day back and I have cried both mornings. Already hated my job so that doesn't help. I just keep asking God to be with me and him and his dad... Prayer seems to be the only thing that helps. And no, 6 weeks isn't long enough. When he starts kindergarten I'd like to work, not a moment before!OrganicMomma -

Aileen and Baby2onway, i was glad we figured something out too. I have to return to work tomorrow night and my mother will be setting for me and she was freaking out about how she's going to be able to take care of her. I'll be working night shift and she wasn't too excited about being up threw the night with a crying baby. I'm so glad she's willing to watch my girls for me, i'm just trying to figure out how i'm going to work 7pm to 7am and get some sleep threw the day. I'm hoping my idea of napping with Laina will work becuz in all reality after u have a baby you don't sleep, you nap threw the first year..lol. I sleep 4 hours tops threw the night n-e ways weather Laina wakes me up or not. Gosh i hate having to leave her, i hope she deals with it better then i do! I've been on the verge of tears all day every time i hold her.high-lee -

Had a Wic appointment today, Gabriella is 8 lbs 12 oz now and 20 in. At her two week doctor appointment they measured her wrong, they measured her at 21 in after just two weeks when she was only 19 in at birth! I didn't think she was really growing that fast!! dedileb -

Not to have a religous debate but has anyone looked into getting their babies baptised. When I baptised my first we went to a really nice church and they had no problem with me not being married. Now I feel like the church we have to take the class at is giving me problems because the father is no longer involved. My kids do have the same father it is just that when I was 3 months I found out he was cheating and he started being really mean telling me this was not his kid. but anyway. I just feel like I am being given a hard time and being asked a lot of questions that normally I would not be askedari08 -

Hi ladies. Me again. Wondering if anyones son had to have the surgery to fix a down pointing urethra or to fix a hernia in the testicles? Rhys has to have both and I was just wondering if anyone had any information first hand? I'm so sad my LO will need these surgeries. I hear they are pretty common, but it still makes me sad.OrganicMomma -

Thanks Peachy, I have a feeling I may post way more now that I'm at work and not the one-armed bandit trying to type, do laundry and eat/prepare food. Our LO is a constant nurser. But not today. He's home with his dad. LOL hopefully all is going well for them!peachy09 -

Organic...good to hear! I'm dreading work & last time I had to go to 2/3 breastmilk & 1/3 formulay for daycare. Worked out ok, but it is rough trying to pump enough!OrganicMomma -

Okay Ladies, first day back to work. Ouch! As much as I would rather be a SAHM, I'm grateful to be employed and quite pleased that I am pumping as much as I am. I had surendured to the idea that the LO may have to have formula while I'm away. Glad that I'm pumping what appears to be enough for him tomorrow! Still loathe (sp) my job... :( Never posted while I was pregnant, but this site has gotten my through the last few months of pregnancy and the first 6 weeks of motherhood... what did mom's do before the WWW? lolpeachy09 -

We had a 1 month appt & Jordan weighed 12 lbs 6 oz! Sometimes if you want to know in between appts you can just stop by the office to just weigh your baby yourself, or if theres a breastfeeding/womens clinic they often have scales available. aileenc0 -

I just switched Laina's formula a couple days ago and its like i have a whole new baby! She was on similac advance and was crying and fussing all the time and getting belly aches and gas alot. So i bought a can of similac sensitive for gas and fussiness and she is so much happier! I can put her down while she's awake and i haven't had to give her n-e gas drops since we switched. I'm so happy she's happy now! I was getting so frustraited cuz i couldn't find the problem. She was BFing and she was doing the same thing with breast milk as the advance formula so i didn't think the milk was the problem, i just thought she was one of those babies that cry alot. So it turns out that DS has a skin granuloma and that is why his cord wasn't separating. Doc put some silver nitrate on it to burn it off, hope it falls off quickly now =)MiniOface -

I feed my baby bottles of breast milk during the day (Born Free bottles) and nurse straight from the tap at night. I didn't know that the baby gets more from the breast than the pump can. That's a relief! carmensmomma -

cdra, crisco works wonders, Laina had a rash badly after like 3 days being home becuz of the constant breast milk sharts, and my mil suggest crisco. It works wonders and it melts when it gets warm so its easier to get off and dosn't get stuck in thier rolls like rash cream. Something to keep in mind incase u don't have the other.carmensmomma -

mommyof2, i had a hard time finding a bottle Laina would take too. I tryed the nuk ones that are supose to go with brestfeeding and be more like a boob nipple and a couple others and she would just spit them out after a few gulps. Finally i opend some of the cheap bottles i got at the shower and she loves them. Thier the fisher price bottles and they cost $1 at the doller store but thier the only ones she'll take, i'm not complainaing tho. Now that she's used to taking a bottle she'll sometimes take the nuk bottles but not if she's feeling picky..lol.
