During the second month of life, your baby may be settling into a routine. You have both had time to recover from the birth and are getting to know each other well. You might still feel overwhelmed and stressed at times, and that is normal.
Your baby's movements are becoming smoother and less jerky. Although he can hold his head up briefly, he still needs your support. While on her tummy, your baby can probably hold her head up slightly. Continue to lay her on her belly for tummy time throughout the day. Babies like to look at different patterns, colors and textures as their eyesight is improving. Because your baby may be rolling over in one direction, it is imperative that you do not ever leave your little one unattended. Even if she has not rolled over yet, one day she will surprise you!
You will be rewarded for all of your dedication this month with smiles of appreciation. Your baby is beginning to smile socially and likes when you smile back at him. Your baby likes to see you excited and the more you interact with him, the more fun he will be for you. Praise your baby for learning a new skill and show him he makes you proud! Some babies begin to coo-make the same sounds back to him. Play cooing games with your baby to help him develop language skills.
Babies have a strong desire to suck and sometimes feeding does not meet their need. Encourage your baby to suck on a fist, hand or pacifier to learn to soothe themselves. Many babies suck on their thumbs or hands before they are even born. Often times, babies enjoy sucking on pacifiers. Be careful not to overuse them and never tie them aorund the baby's neck.
While crying is totally normal, some babies will develop colic. Colic occurs when a baby continuously cries and can not be comforted. Continue to comfort your baby the best you can and ask for suggestions from the doctor. Medication may be necessary. Accept help from others and take the time for yourself that you deserve and need. While it can be challenging and tiresome, colic usually settles down around 3-4 months. Babies need caregivers to be patient, gentle and attentive.
Babies hands have unclenched and will remain open most of the time now. Encourage your baby to reach for objects and grasp ahold of them. Let your baby experience different sizes, colors and textures to optimize learning.
Your baby will be getting his first series of shots at this time. It is very important that you have your child immunized against serious diseases. Not only is it important for your child's health, it is critical for the well-being of the community. Giving your baby tylenol before he receives his shots will decrease the pain. Vaccines do have some risks and side effects, but are much less severe than the actual disease.
Your baby may be going a bit longer in between feedings. Most breastfed babies can go about 3 hours in between each feeding and bottlefed babies are feeding closer to every 4 hours. You may have been told that if you add solids or cereal to baby's bottle, they will sleep better. This may be tempting, but it should not be done. Breastmilk or formula should be the only source of nutrition at this time. Babies at this age are still to young to start on solids.
Continue to play with your baby and teach her about the world around her. Set her on your lap facing outwards so that she can see more. Talk to your baby, sing to your baby and tell her all about what you are doing. Babies love to listen and this is how they learn. During playtime, sit her so that she is facing you. Stick your tongue out and see what she does. Babble back and forth. Make sure that you read to your baby. Babies do not necessarily care what you read to them, they just like hearing your voice and seeing the brightly colored pictures.

- Your baby may gurgle, coo, grunt and hum to show her feelings. Coo and gurgle back and talk to her face to face.
- Some babies may squeal and laugh.
- Recognizes parents and will calm down when he hears the parents voices.
- Your baby listens to and enjoys music. Use her awake times to stimulate her sensory development. Sing to her and play music. Vary what your baby hears.

So I'm out of ideas of trying to switch my baby from sleeping during the day. She just won't wake up. Its very frustrating. I try to move her around so she is not comfortable to sleep n talk to her, n tickle her, but nothing is working. It seems like she is sleeping better with all that happening. lol. How long do they stay awake for if they do stay up? 1 hr? 2hrs?love4bb -

AmyLynn... yes on the hungry all of the time! I know nursing has a lot to do with it but I have certain times of the day when I just cannot seem to eat enough! A day ago after reading your post about making banana bread, I made two loaves it sounded so good, as we had some bananas that were beyond eating but perfect for bread. Trying to make healthy choices when eating and I am trying to excercise so that I can continue to lose the weight gained during pregnancy but sometimes it is hard. Last night my husband brought home some ice cream for me from our favorite ice cream shop as a treat- really sweet of him and I of course wolfed it down : ) AmyLynn82 -

Hi all - my baby is 1 month today!! I'm getting a bit confused with names, but I'm thinking pregnant and gorgeous is Rubes? Just want you to know that my son didn't lose any weight either and was still prescribed gaviscon by my GP. Although she was pretty sure it was reflux she also said that if infact he's crying because of colic, then it won't make a difference, but it's best to try it as it won't affect baby. You really need to go back to the GP and TELL them your baby has reflux and you need medication as the gaviscon doesn't have any side effects and it won't hurt to try. Poor baby - I just think of the heartburn I suffered during pregnancy, and then think thats what little babies with acid reflux go through - its heartbreaking :(twicemama -

Love4bb- I got mine in the medical section at Walmart. It was with the tensor bandages, walkers etc. It was $20 and plays 8 or 10 different sounds. White noise, heart beat, waterfalls etc. The one at Babies R Us is like $50.
As for the hubby doing crap all with baby, I hear ya. Mine is the same. Some guys are so useless...mine is better with our older kids but still no prize..lol

Rubes.... in a few months, are they serious!!! I can't believe they are not willing to try some sort of medication to see if it would be effective. If Arun was not fussy or in pain then that would be one thing but you have shared how uncomfortable he is. Did they acknowledge that they think it is reflux?rls- I♥mythreebabies -

Rubes - it's so wrong!! Milkyway, also uk month 0 has been prescribed for reflex after a few bad days. Can you change Drs surgeries? It's great it's not affecting his weight gain though.Pregnant and Gorgeous -

Arun weighs 12 lb 7 oz now. Thats a totalt weight gain of 3 lb 1/2 oz since birth. Coz his reflux isnt affecting his weight, they wont do anything. I just have to sit it out. They said that he should stop or at least it should ease up in a few months. In the mean time I have a baby who is in severe discomfort/pain.love4bb -

thanks for the advice. i might try to use a noise machine. Where could I get one, any baby store? Which one do you use AmyLynn? I'm not too upset with the baby not sleeping at night. But i do want her to switch from sleeping during the day. I am more annoyed n upset with my BF, cuz I thought he would be more helpful n involved since this is our first child. I'm taking in all the moments i have with her while she is lil. i love watching her, holding her.. everything. But my BF is nothing like that.. he can't even hold her for 20mins n he is done. He uses the excuse that he works n he is tired. I tell him to watch our baby for one day n see if its tiring. i don't know what do to.AmyLynn82 -

Love- have you tried a noise machine? I use one only at night with the white noise playing. Can use a fan too. You must be at your wits end. I totally feel for yougoobs -

Worked out yet? Lol... No way!!! I've barely even managed to make a proper dinner let alone anything else, there's some domestic goddessing going on in here!! Love4bb - I'm in the same situation with my oh, I knew I'd be doing the brunt of the work due to breastfeeding, but I didn't dream it would be to this extent!!! Admittedly he's at work, but lo is 5 weeks old now and he hasn't got up once to her in the night and sometimes comes home telling me he's shattered and I feel like knocking him out!!! Lol. He now sleeps on the sofa so he's not woken up when I feed and change her. Rubes - how are you getting on with Arun? Did you go to a&e or did you decide to wait for Thursday? I'm taking my lo to the drs tomw hopefully to see if they can prescribe something to help with the colicky symptoms...love4bb -

hi all, i'm still in the same routine, lo sleeping during the day n at night we ended up sleeping in my chair. Sigh. Its getting hard cuz i'm getting neck n back pains from it. oh yeah, I love it how my bf dont even bother getting up when she cries in her bed. he just sleeps through it n i have to get up. i really didnt think he would be so bad with babies. anyways, i havent got my period yet.. i'm afraid when it does come. N i have tried sex yet, i still feel lil sore there n also afraid that it would hurt. I see my dr this friday for 6wks pp check up. OH, anyone else baby have nasal congestion? my lo is getting stuffed nose from boogers, I have saline drop to clean it out. Im guessing its from the dry air in the room. I think our humidifier isnt working so well. mmmmm banana bread sounds good. lol.Pregnant and Gorgeous -
