Your baby, 11 months

25 26 27 28 29 30 31
32 and older

11 months old Your baby is getting ready to take his first steps! He can stand on his own and if you hold onto his hands, he will walk. He does a good job of bending, squatting, stooping and getting back to a standing position. You might be able to tell if he is going to be right or lefthanded.

Your baby knows that people and objects have names. Expand her vocabulary by continuing to read, sing and talk to her. If you laugh at something your baby does, she will do it again. She will imitate everything that you do. She sees an expression on your face and will mimic it. She is learning what animals and people do. If she sees a cat ot dog, she will meow and bark. If your baby knows that you are dissapointed or upset with her, she will hide from you.

Each baby is different and develops at different paces. Just because your first child walked at 11 months, does not mean this child will. If you are concerned about your child's development, speak to his doctor. Remember that the more you interact and guide him, the more he will develop. If your baby gets frustrated when trying to do something new, don't push him. This will cause him to get frustrated and he will lose self confidence.

Show your child what you expect out of him. Realistic expectations will help your child follow directions better. She is still learning what is acceptable and what is not, and it is your job to guide her. Avoiding situations where you have to constantly redirect your baby will make it easier on you and him both. Love, attention and affection are all part of effective discipline. Always remember to praise your child when you see her being appropriate.

Toys that are good for this age are: books, push toys, ride on toys, balls, stacking rings, simple puzzles, telephones, puppets, large cars and trucks, shape boxes, pegboards and pegs, linking toys, large blocks, toys with textures, noisy toys, dolls and stuffed animals. Pretend play toys are also appropriate. Dress up clothes, hats and pretend foods are all good for little learners.

Your child is probably eating a wide variety of foods at this point. She is also getting better control of using a spoon, although alot still ends up in the floor. Although she is still nursing or being bottle-fed formula, she should be drinking juice or water from a cup. Remember to offer her a wide variety of nutritional foods. Establishing healthy eating habits now will go along ways in the future.

Personal questions to all the breastfeeders out there.....it took me a good 4 months after I stopped breast feeding for my nipples to feel sensitive in a good way again....after only 2 months of breast feeding I literally couldn't feel them for ages! Is this normal?!

gladek - Wednesday, 4 Nov
We are still breastfeeding, and for me, the first month or so was extremely painful, but then it went away and after a couple months of working out the kinks, it got extremely easy and relaxing. And never having have had to buy formula has been a nice money saver! As for pumps, I use the Medela PumpinStyle and it is definately worth the investment. You can get extra parts/replacement parts pretty cheap at Target or on Amazon. While my son is still nursing often when I am home, he now drinks mostly water when I am at work, so I am down to only pumping once during the workday now :-)

River...Oh yeah!! same here, Ben holds and plays with his goods the entire time...I yell and my hubby says its his let him LOL I guess they learn early!!!

River - Wednesday, 4 Nov
By the way, Riley is always grabbing his 'willy' (don't know what else to call it!! LOL) when his nappy is off... his hands never leave between his legs- he is fascinated by it! Anyone else with boys having this happen, or is Riley a little deviant!

River - Wednesday, 4 Nov
I breastfed Riley for 9 months and the first week or so after he was born, it was excruciatingly painful, but I perservered, even though the nurses all told me if it hurts you aren't doing it properly. After that it didn't hurt any more. I wish they would just be honest and say it will hurt until your nipples adjust- it's like they are scared it will put you off breastfeeding if they admit it will hurt to start with- it made it more difficult because I thought I not doing it properly! I used the Tommee Tippee breast pump and it was time consuming but i will definitely use it again with this next baby. Riley's 1st bday is the 16th and his party is next Sunday.. I cry too when I look back over pics and video of when he was a tiny baby!

anotheryummymummy - Wednesday, 4 Nov
Harrison has started to walk on his own (a few steps, and walking very well holding only one hand) but still is nowhere near crawling. Its so funny to see....when he's sitting in the middle of the room he's stuck and looks a bit like a big 6 month old, but when he's somewhere he can pull up or on his feet he's charging around and looks like a toddler! Its almost like 2 different babies!

anotheryummymummy - Wednesday, 4 Nov
isaacs-mama its really nice to read you breast feeding story....it makes me think I might try it again next time around. I had a bad experience myself, but if i could go back and tell myself any advice to make it better it would be that its normal for it to be painful at first, but that it gets much much better.....personally I found there was too much emphasis on 'you must be doing it wrong if its hurting'......had I been left to my own devices, not felt so pressurized, and given a more realistic idea that the first 4 weeks would be hard, I think I would have lasted for longer than 8 weeks and would have had more positive memories of it (or still be doing it now!)

isaacs-mama - Wednesday, 4 Nov
ready for number 2....im still breastfeeding....i bought the medela battery operated pump, it was ok, but i never used it much as then u have to sterilise plus it takes a loonnnng time to get the milk out with a pump....i tended just to let him fed on demand for first few weeks - around 10 weeks i started making a note of his natural pattern and adapted a routine from that, BF every 3 hours during the day and an extra one just before bed - he started sleeping 12 hours at night at that time, and has done ever since...i love love love breastfeeding, especially the morning feeds in bed when hes all snuggly! I did need nipple shiels to begin with though as he wouldnt latch and it took me a while to figure it out - the shields were invaluable. I hope you have a great BF experience....its very freeing - no bottles, sterilsiing, boiling etc! :)

readyfornumber2 - Wednesday, 4 Nov
All you moms who breastfed I have a question, did you pump and which pump did you like? I am going to give breastfeeding a shot with this next baby and need some pointers on what equipment I need and where to get it. I will be buying a pump because I am a freak about cleanliness (sp?). Any input would be appreciated.

Hey there to all you wonderful mommies. My LO will be 12 months on Friday. Im very concerned about him. He seems extremely frightend of large toys. About a week ago when we were visiting fam, they have a big plastic ball and my hubby rolled into him. Connor burst into tears and was soooo scared. Then today my momin law bought him a truck but its not huge just a bit big but he is so scared of it. He doesnt want to be near it. Do you ladies think he will grow out of this? R any of your LO'S experencing the same thing. Thanks ladies will apreciate any feed back.

Elliott-James-mummy - Wednesday, 4 Nov
Yippee! as of 5.57pm today (UK time) Elliott will be officially 1 year old! We are having such a great day so far, been to baby clinic and had him weighed he is now 23lb 11oz and measuring 78cm, hard to believe he was 7lb 1oz at birth. My good friend has been around and brought him a quad, he whizzes around on it like a pro. He is napping now, but when he wakes we are having an indoor picnic for lunch, go on a nice walk with the dogs, then watch a dvd, before I make his favourite (bangers and mash) for tea. Can't wait til his daddy gets home so we can open the rest of his presents!!

Averysmommie - Wednesday, 4 Nov
mrs.beasley: I was pulled out of work @ 6 months due to bloodpressure, then I got toxemia, which went into preeclampsyia, I was in and out of the hospital, had multiply scares with Avery's health until they finally induced me @ 39 wks & then I was in labor for 36 hours, pushed for 3 hours & she had flipped so c-section was how she was born (which for me was not ideal after I had done all that hard work, haha) but she's here & turning 1 & it ALMOST makes me want another :)

kirstykiteflyer - Tuesday, 3 Nov
I'm really excited about Rosalie's birthday in a month, but for some reason I also get quite tearful sometimes when I think about it. I'm very emotional at the moment, and I think it's partly to do with knowing my baby won't be a baby much longer...I'm so proud of how well she's doing, so excited by every new stage, and yet here I am crying!

Mrs. Beasley - Tuesday, 3 Nov
I am excited but it is bitter sweet. What happened with your last pregnancy?

Averysmommie - Tuesday, 3 Nov
Hey ladies! Is anyone else as excited as I am about our LO turning 1 soon??? Avery turns one this sunday, its so bitter sweet that my baby girl is growing up so fast...If I didn't have such a horrible pregnancy I would be ready for #2, but it makes me stand offish about another one....

Mrs. Beasley - Tuesday, 3 Nov
Hey all! Ok I need some advice please. What are good foods to feed my baby who only has 4 teeth? Cuz her bottle at night is not sufficent enough for her anymore. She wakes up hungry every 4 hours. Please help. What do all of you feed your LO's?

Hi ladies, please could anyone help? After always being a good sleeper, ten days ago we went to a wedding and left Rosalie with her grandparents...we were going there after the wedding to stay the night, so they needed to settle Rosie for the night. Unfortunately she refused to go to sleep and they decided to take her back downstairs for a cuddle and let her watch TV. Since then she has refused to go to sleep unless I am cuddling her. I've had between 30 mins and 2 hours sleep a night til 2 days ago when we decided to try controlled crying. Never thought I'd do it, and it makes me cry too, but we are making progress. The problem is, as soon as Rosalie wakes up she stands up and holds on to the bars of her cot. Although she is now managing to get back to sleep on her own, she's not lying down first! I keep finding her sitting bent double or with her face resting against the bars. I'm finding it upsetting as it can't be a safe way to sleep and I try to stay awake after she falls asleep so I can lie her down when she is deeply asleep, but I'm so tired I fall asleep myself and she ends up staying that way for a couple of hours. Has anyone had this problem? how do I teach her to lie down? I feel awful, like I'm a complete failure and a terrible mum. I just don't know what to do.

Hey everyone! Aryana's surgery went well. She woke up from the anastetic really angry but when we got home she took a long nap and woke up happy as could be! Hopefully these tubes will help her. Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts! :o)

Elliott-James-mummy - Monday, 2 Nov
readyfornumber2, I am the same, been weeping a few days myself lately x

readyfornumber2 - Monday, 2 Nov
Anyone find that as they get closer to their LO's 1 year they are getting more and more sentimental? I was looking at Noah's pics from the last year for a poster I am putting together and found myself weeping. Maybe its the pregnancy but I'm pretty sure I would have been crying anyway.

Elliott-James-mummy - Monday, 2 Nov
Only 2 more days and my little Elliott becomes a 1 year old. Can't believe where the time has gone. We had his birthday party on Halloween and it was brilliant!
