Your baby, 13 months

32 and older

13 months old The second year of life has alot in store for your toddler. He is moving from babyhood to childhood. It is important to give your child the love, support, patience, encouragement and guidance that he needs. Toddlers are a challenge and at times, he may test your patience. Continue to set rules and enforce them. Soon your child will learn his limits.

You might notice that your child has developed new fears. This is normal and should pass when she sees that there is really nothing to be afraid of. Some children are afraid of separation, change, inanimate obects, animals and imaginary creatures. If you subjected your child to these types of objects from a young age, she may not show fear. Respect her fears and gently tell her there is nothing to be afraid of.

Because your baby is probably standing and walking well, he does not like any type of restraint. Occasionally, there are times that he may need to be in a playpen for safety. Your baby is beginning to do things for attention and likes when you clap or acknowledge her cuteness. At this point, she is beginning to adjust to babysitters but she is still afraid of strangers. She will empty the contents out of anything that you allow her to. She likes to take socks out of drawers, pots out of cabinets, etc. It is very important that you have childproofed your home and made a safe place for your toddler to explore.

Language skills are developing and he will begin saying simple words. Sometimes he gets frustrated if he can not find the words to say. Your child will respond to his name and he will look in the right direction when you ask him where an object is. He has begun to understand the names of objects, foods, people and animals. You might notice that he has a favorite book and will want you to read it over and over.

Your child does like to play alone sometimes, but she really likes to play with you. She likes to hide and have you find her. Some of her favorite toys are push and pull toys, simple ride on toys, pretend play, building materials, crayons and paper, cars and trucks, balls and other bright objects. Providing her a variety of educational toys will encourage her learning. Help her build towers and play imitation games with her.

Sometimes it is hard for babies to give up the bottle or breast. Weaning from the breast or bottle should be done slowly. Many babies want to nurse or drink from a bottle before bed and when they wake up. Do not allow your child to take a bottle or cup to bed with her. By now, she can drink whole milk. Offer her milk in a cup and encourage her to drink from it. She will drink less milk as she is eating more foods. Soon your child will forget about the breast or bottle. Don't offer it if she has moved on.

Ok, it doesn't but if you highlight it and copy then paste in a new browser it'll bring up his flickr page. On the second page are the two videos of him doing his tricks. :-) Ben LOOOVES books which is so funny 'cause early on I was convinced he hated them. He used to vomit every time I'd sit him up on my lap to read to him LOL! It was probably the position more than anything (he was a BIG spitter upper till he was at least 6 months old) but it was just so consistent I had to laugh. Now a single book can keep him occupied for like 5 or 10 minutes which is a lot at this age!! Cupcake, march your ass right to that store and get yourself that coat!!! You SO deserve it mama. I know you hardly ever go out or treat yourself in any way and that's not good. You just got yourself a job--buy yourself a treat!!! Ruby--soooo close honey, just hang in there. Everything will work itself out with Ayaana. She'll adapt to the new baby just like your older child adapted to her. I hope you're not too too uncomfortable though I remember those last few weeks SUCK. For me the insomnia was the worst. I was lucky and was never in a lot of physical pain..except for my feet. Oh my poor feet! Thinking of you. Hopeful--you know Keira better than anyone and if you think she's ready then she's probably ready! Doesn't hurt to try at least. Keep us posted!!

Ollie loves the 'Thats not my...' books. He's so cute - i love it when he sits 'reading'!! I am a book worm myself so i'm hoping to impart my love of books! Thanks for saying i look young!! hahaha!! I saw a girl i'd not seen since we were 16 the other day and she said i looked exactly the same!!! Hoping to hit 30 at still be getting ID'd!! LOL!!!! Yay Ashlee!!! Hopefuls idea of a baby dolly i think is a great one. Don't worry tho hun. Ayaa will adjust quickly. As long as you're really positive she will be too. And DON@T WORRY about her 'loosing' her babyhood to the new baby. You will do great and the will be so close I'm sure. Preggo clothes are crap arent they! lol!! Yay for the shopping spree!! I've fallen in love with this winter coat in Topshop but at £75 its a bit steep for me to spend on myself. Especially this close to Xmas. Reeeally want it tho!!! Keira pees on the potty every time I put her on now! She holds her breath and just starts peeing. From everything I've read etc it is really is early but I guess if she's ready she's ready! Like I said before, till I'm home during christmas holidays I won't be able to get her to do it all the time. I told the daycare lady and she just looked at me like I had 3 heads, don't think she is ready to help in the process yet. So it's kinda hard to really focus on it since I'm at work all week. So for now I'll just take it for what its worth. Kathleen that is too cute! Keira is making many more sounds too but during a story she just throws the book and loses interest very quickly lol. Hey Ashlee good luck and everybody is always welcome in our group the more the merrier! Oh my goodness Ruby not to long now!!!! Did you get Ayaana a doll yet? Maybe you can start with that if you haven't yet. Keira use to get jealous when I would hold the doll and pretend to rock it. She would throw it on the ground. lol Now she gives it kisses and brings the dolly to me so I can hold it! Hopefully it's just a quick stage that she'll get over soon!!!!

rubylove - Friday, 28 Oct
I see the group decision to move over has been made hehe I think it's better we did, because it would only get harder to move on in the long run, I mean how would we bring ourselves to go mth 14?! Well i was in l&d last night, had a severe chest pain and rock hard belly, tried eevrything, but it was getting better, couldnt even breathe properly!Anyway everything turned out ok, they took tests and did ultrasound.I did end up having some big contractions a few hrs after I got there!I even feel them right now, so let's see if i go a bit early again this time!Kathleen- Ben sounds so cute,I luv when they say all these words in a funny way,I kind of miss it when my 4 yr old pronounces things correctly, gone are the days when she would try to say firetruck, but say fire*uck instead lol Ayaana had her first jealous moment today,i came home from the hospital and both my girls were on my lap, but she was hugging and kissing me and putting her head on my shoulder, and everytime my 4 yr old tried to hug me she's hitting and pushing her away!Oh boy, I am in big trouble once the baby was born..I thought she was too young for jealousy!Cupcake- figurines, are you serious?! lol I wont reveal ur secret ok..no one has to know ur a cool extrior with granny tendencies lol I cant wait to look cool again..pregnancy clothes are REALLLLLLY getting on my nerves! After baby,I am going to go on a shopping spree!hopeful- did you say Keira went on the potty?WOW!thats super early, but if she can do it, imagine the savings on diapers lol I put my 4 yr old on the potty when seh was 14 mths and seh got so scared, she never went near a potty until she was 3!That really backfired on me haha

ashleecarter - Friday, 28 Oct
I collect those Willow tree figurines and I'm 23! Lol I have the pregnant one, the mommy w baby one, and also one holding a folded flag. I love them! -and thanks for the welcome back! =) the TTC boards are ehh lol the girls have all ganged up and aren't very welcoming to newbies. So I just sorta pop in and out

kathleen112 - Friday, 28 Oct
Welcome back ashlee! Yet another one from our group TTC! Best of luck. :-) ***Cupcake--the 112 is for my birthday Jan 12. I suppose that in England you would have written that 121, huh? Lol! My nicknames for Ben are 'papple' and 'bub bub'. LOL!! Don't even ask me why, couldn't tell you. It's so cute 'cause just in the few days Ben has gotten quite chatty and he said 'bub bub' tonight for the first time. SOOOO CUTE!!! He now says 'dot' for hot (as in, Why don't we touch mommy's coffee Ben? 'Dot' :-), says 'moo' when asked what a cow says and imitates lots of other sounds. It's so fun! The best is that we've been reading this Sandra Boynton book to him from birth called Moo Baa LaLaLa and now if we say the first three lines 'A cow says moo, a sheep says baa, three singing pigs say' he'll respond with the la las. OMG I love him so much!!! :-) Sorry to hear your friend is in pain but she needs to move on from that douchebag. I love the image of you getting all bent out of shape if the kids touched your figurines. I know in your heart you feel older 'cause you had kids so young but you still LOOK so young it's hard to imagine you being a collector. :-) Ben is starting to bite too!! He only has two teeth on the bottom but he can still make it hurt! OUCH! I was cracking up too at people thinking that picture of Keira was Ollie. HELLO?!?! Lol. ***Hopeful--I agree with Cupcake, Keira seems WAY more advanced than Ben is, hence my 'what?!?!?!' comment on your potty status lol. I cannot even imagine Ben pissing on a potty at this point!! Good for her!! I remember my one friend trying to train her (now 3 1/2 year old) daughter when she was maybe 15 months or so and having no luck with it whatsover. She used to put her on the potty in the living room so that Ruby could watch her favorite shows (it was the only thing that would keep her seated) and one day she left the room for a minute to come back and find Ruby had pooped NEXT TO the potty on the rug lol. I think at that point she gave up until Ruby was older. Hopefully you'll have better luck! Glad that you heard from the hubs and that he's coming home! ***Kash--WTF?!?! This does not bode well. Have you heard from him? What possible excuse could he have come up with?!

kashsmommy - Thursday, 27 Oct
Guess I'll join y'all even though I'm 2 hours and 2 minutes early ;)

ashleecarter - Thursday, 27 Oct
I didn't even know you ladies were still chatting on here!! I have been Chatting on th FB page and now joined back up in the TTC page.

hopeful29 - Thursday, 27 Oct
holy you are on a role!!! Keira's middle name is Leanne. I have no nickname yet but thats cute I like Kookie! OMG it's that an old lady thing??? I've been collecting Royal doulton figurines for a few years now!!! Are you saying I'm OLD??????LOL You are too funny girl! Thats funny Keira loves being chased too, mostly by the dogs though...she'll come around the corner and if they start to approach her she takes off screeching and running!!! She loves it and it's too cute to watch!!! So I hear you on that one! Thanks for the *my* Keira in your post...lol

cupcake83 - Thursday, 27 Oct
I will be quiet now 6 out of the last 7 posts have been from meeeeeeeeeeeeee xx

cupcake83 - Thursday, 27 Oct
OMG i think I'm officially getting old! I will tell you girls but i'm not telling anyone else - I want to start a collection..of figurines!! LOL!! What is happening to me??lol!! Gone are the hard drinking, smoking, clubbing girl!! I NEVER thought i would want to collect 'orniments'....is that even how u spell it???? LOL!! Search 'Willow tree' figures. I've fallen in love with them! All the baby ones, like 'The gift' and 'The quilt' and the mother and daughter/son ones. Hahhaha!! Don't laugh at me!! Maybe i could get a special display cabinet and polish them and scream at the girls if they go near them in case they break them!!! LOL!!! Oh dear......

cupcake83 - Thursday, 27 Oct
Also Ollie loves to be chased! If I het down on my hands and knees and crawl after him making a 'Raaaa' noise he squeals ands speed crawls away from me with the biggest grin on his face! I think he would love it if I got him a tent to play in as I keep finding him playing in little nooks around the house! I'm thinking it's a good idea for an Xmas gift but I'm sure I'll cave and get him one before then!! Maybe one with a tunnel attached! Oooo

cupcake83 - Thursday, 27 Oct
Kathleen what does the 112 in your name mean? I've wanted to ask you that for so long but kept forgetting!!!!

cupcake83 - Thursday, 27 Oct
Also I know!! Couldn't believe they thought that was Ollie!! AS BLOODY IF I would still be bfing if he had as many teeth as *my* Keira does!!! I smiled when u liked my comment cos I knew that's what u were thinking!! It's funny how we know each others real names yet we diligently call each other our usernames on here and real names on fb!!It wouldn't feel right calling you all anything except our usernames on here!! For some reason tho I always wanna call Kash 'Kash' on fb!! I think it's cos it starts with the same letter as your name! And on the IAP Facebook page we just end up talking to each other same as usual anyway!!!!!

cupcake83 - Thursday, 27 Oct
I know what u mean wit the animals watching!! Our cat always seems to turn up when we're getting in the mood! Lol!! I think it's cool we both have Keira's ! Especially how it's spelt the same, considering there is so many variations! What is her middle name? My Keira gets called 'kipples' or 'kookie' in our house more than her actual name! Do u guys have any pet names for your lo's? Ollie's is 'Ollie-pop' as in lollipop!! And Phoebe's is Weebs! Silly!! My girls were both 2 and a bit when they potty trained. They both showed zero interest befoe then! I had to wee in the potty to show Phoebe how to do it! There is no reason on this earth why my friend would loose custody and he knows it!!

hopeful29 - Thursday, 27 Oct
Good one Kathleen that was sure to get a reaction to move the crew over lol. Cupcake when did you potty train the rest of your lo's? Everytime you mention Keira I think your talking about your Keira lol. I seen the picture with her missing tooth and knew who it was, whoever made a comment about that being Ollie??? Right out of her!!! Oh my goodness biting, yes Keira does too but it's funny to me since her gums don't hurt! I'm sure I won't be laughing when (if) she ever gets any! I'm sure they'll be alone time with the hubby when he gets here since Keira goes to bed at 8pm, however I have to lock the dogs up or they watch and it's a little disturbing. Your friends ex really is on crack, as if, is there any reason she wouldn't have custody???

cupcake83 - Thursday, 27 Oct
Ok ok you two! lol!! We'll move! LOL!! Hello 13 mths...gulp! So to continue what i was saying, Kash he's messing u about already? Can't believe that! Point out that if he's not a man of his word then ul have to go to court and deal with that whole pain in the ass thing. Hopeful - I never knew that it was easier to train before 18mths. Interesting. Keira seems so much further developed than Ollie! The most he does is try and touch the water in the toilet - eeww!!!Brilliant news about ur hubby coming home! Too bad Keira goes to daycare, but maybe u could catch an hour or so time together when she was there for some sexy time!!! So Ollie's started biting. Its soooo annoying. If I'm not paying him 100% attention he'll bite me! If i'm standing he'll climb up my leg and bite me on the inside of the thigh! I KNEW if i ever had a boy he'd be a climbing biting destroyer and o yes i was right!!!! I can't rmber if i told u but my friend and her hubby are getting a divorce. He was caught kissing that bar girl and now he's in a relationship with her and has totally left my friend. Good riddance i say but she's distraught. All he's concerned about is money (he wants her to give him £10,000 and set him up in a nice flat cos the baby will go there to stay with him!!!) WTF! Deluded!!She inherited a lot when her Dad died and it looks like he's got his eyes on that. Its disgusting. I'm trying to be supportive and not slag him off too much tho. She doesn't c it cos she still loves himbut i'm trying to be subtle and toughen her up! Thry lived in the next village to me but now he's staying in my village so i'm sure i'll c him about and i won't be so subtle with him!!!

kathleen112 - Wednesday, 26 Oct
Think about it this way, Ben and Keira are the older, more mature kids in the 12 month group. :-)

Just peaking in since Keira was 13months as of yesterday but I never realized till Kathleen told me!!! I'll be peaking my head in from time to time but for now I'm sticking to 12 months I'm not ready to leave there yet!!!!Nena , Keira's cousin didn't start crawling till well into her 15th month so I wouldn't worry about it she is a very very active 3 year old now! Every kids is different and they do it when they are ready!!! Just like teeth I guess since Keira is my toothless little angel! LOL I just realized that post was from Sept so you prob won't see this!!!
