Children learn through play. As your child becomes increasingly interested in more advanced toys, you can make some fun things for him to play with. Not all of his toys need to be store bought. They just need to be safe and stimulating. Your toddler might even be able to help you make something new! Parents and caregivers should play with their children and encorage active learning. When playing, it is best to let him lead the way. After playing for a while your child's way, show him how to something another way. Show him how to combine toys to make playtime more fun. Your child may become aftraid of the dark and may stop playing in his room alone.
Your child is interested in small things. Bugs, pebbles, crumbs and other small items are fun for her. Your child can stoop and stand back up agian. Sometimes your child will drop things just to have you pick them up for her. If you are not careful, this will soon turn into a game that she loves!
Your child can let you know when she wants something and is beginning to increase her vocabulary. He likes to make sounds and might scream to let you know just how powerful his voice can be. He inititates games and will bring you books or toys that he enjoys.
By fourteen months, you will have to limit the amount of television your toddler watches. The television should not be used as a babysitter and the programs she watches should be monitored. Watching the television does not give your toddler a chance to explore and develop muscles.
A child this age is mobile and curious! Take special precautions to prevent poisoning. Everyday items can be poisonous if a child were to consume them. Colognes, cleaners, spices, garden plants, and lots of other items are dangerous. Keeping a clean and clutter free home can help eliminate hazards. Keep the number of the poison control center posted at each phone in case of an emergency.
Discipline can be hard, but it is an important part of parenting. Disciplining your child is important to help them grow into responsible adults. By fourteen months, your child already has developed a close bond with you. He knows that you love him and he trusts you. During the second year of life, toddlers want to please their parents by completing simple instructions. Your child will also begin to mimic your behaviors. Set your rules and stick to them. When your child is misbehaving, pull them aside and remind them of the rules.

AMAZING news about your friend Hopeful!!!!! So pleased for her! Not so pleased about your news however hun :( Just what u didn't want, hey. For what its worth I'm sure you will ne as sucessful on this new path as u have been in the military. Aww Rubyyyy! Bless little Vinny and her jelously! I have a 3 year (minus 9 days!) gap between my girls and i would say we never really experienced any jelousy/fighting when they were younger (now, well they can't agree the sky is blue!)All i would say is make sure you keep her routine as normal as possible. Keep any little jokes you have with her, just you and her. Make her feel special for being older and helping the babies cos she's such a BIG CLEVER girl...but then she will ALWAYS be mummys baby too...even when she's 40 (hahaah thats what i say to my girls!!) I'm sure you know this tho hun..you got it covered!! Like the others said hows things with hubs? You still planning on your trip? Yep Ollie is a climber!! Sofa, stairs, chairs, beds anything!!! His favourite thing is climbing on Keira's bottom bunk and then climbing onto the chest of drawers next to it, standing on that and trying to get onto Phoebe's top bunk..HEART ATTACK Mummy!! Hopeful, LOL Keira loves the air freshener!! Kathleen - I have the cutest image of Ben splashing in the dogs water bowl!! Ollie loves the kitchen too - especially the craft drawer!! I keep all the glitter, stickers, paints and generally sparkly craft bits in a drawer that is within his reach and he loves searching thru it!! Yest erday he was crawling around with a High School Musical Pencilcase!!! Oh and he loves to dump the cereal out all over the floor!! I'm such a pushover tho and tend to laugh when i should probably tell him off!! Kathleen I'm curious to know what 'your little barrier' consists of??? What have you fashioned?!!!! lol!! Nooooooo u can't have cut Ben's curls!! Ollie needs to have his hair cut but in my head i was justifying not doing it cos 'Ben's not had a haircut yet'!! Hahahah!! C i take u girls around with me in my head!!! Ollie does need it done tho - after 2 girls haircuts at 14 mths is a new experience!!! In preparation for putting uo our Xmas decs I cleaned our living room and instead of giving away/selling all the baby baby toys/bouncy chair etc I put them all in storage SO baby no 4 is somewhere on the horizon! I must be MAD!!! Hey Kathleen, hows about we try and do it together next time around aswell???!!! And u Hopeful, if your leaving your job why not have another little buddy for Keira??!!! G'on...u know u wanna....lol!! Oh but don't wait 4 years. There is 4 years between me and my elder bro and we have NEVER gotten along. There is 13 mths between him and my sister then 3 yrs between my sis and me. As we were 2 girls we got put together sharing a room after i was born and my bro was WILDLY jealous and hated me as a kid. I have never known why but it just carried on as we grew up and we have never said more than a few necessary words to each other. I mean really, sorry i was born!! He is an idiot as far as I'm concerned tho so it doesn't bother me!! He gets irritated when he tries to pull rank as the eldest even now and i'm like eerrr... think not!!! LOLZZZ Kathleen, at least my bro didn't punch me in the face!!! HAHAHAAHAH!!! I LOVE it when u share little nuggets of comedy gold like that!! My bro called me 'Cabbage' for about 4 years - a teenage girl does not appreciate such things!!! Guess what, Pheebs came out of school today saying she'd had a 'gross day' cos they'd learnt about periods and vaginas. I had a frikkin funny turn in the playground!!! I mean i know she has to learn about it but she's my baby!!!She's only 9!!! I'm thinking did they send a letter out to tell us and i never got it cos i'd of appreciated some warning! My girls are innocent and know NOTHING about that sort of thing. When she came home and was talking to me about 'the vagina hole' Daddy had to leave the room! He even said could i pull her out of the class?!! Goodness my baby!!!! She still thinks you get babies from a 'special seed' that u get from the chinese medicine place near our house...she decided this herself when she was 5 and i never felt the need to correct her!! She does sex ed in the summer term..oy! :Skathleen112 -

Wow Hopeful, I was hoping that wouldn't be the case, sorry. :-( I'm glad that you're taking control and not going though I'm sure it will be a rough adjustment period. What line of work are you doing in the military? Ben's hair was getting so long he was actually being called a girl every so often so I decided enough was enough. The only reason I didn't want to was because he had these adorable littel baby curls in the back that I knew would disappear (I was right) and probably never return with the first cut but I had to bite the bullet. He wasn't the most cooperative of subjects lol so it's a little uneven but she did the best she could and he's cute no matter what. :-) Great to hear from you Ruby!!!! You have your hands full girl!! You never did get Ayanna out of your bed, huh? I think you're right...the first couple months will be a reprieve with Ryaa sleeping so much but once she becomes more alert watch out!! Was wondering the same things as hopeful, do you still plan to take the girls abroad for awhile? Sorry your eldest is having jealousy issues...I've heard it's easier to have a second baby right away 'cause once the first is two or (worse) three then it's a really hard adjustment for them. Well I obviously didn't have number two right away so I'll probably be in hte same situation as you in a couple years and will be asking for advice on how you dealt with it. :-) If it makes you feel better my brother was 3 1/2 when I was born and hated me...he even punched me in the face once and gave me a black eye. The moral of the story is that I lived to tell the tale lol. hopeful29 -

So I got word today that they are making me go(posting me)to where my husband is so you'd think I'd be happy right? Well Not so much cause the job is one that will have me gone ALOT. So I'm putting my release in cause I refuse to do this to Keira. It's very scary as it's all I know and what I've been doing for the past 14 years. Now to have to start over is really scary.hopeful29 -

Yahoo Ruby good to hear from you!!!! Glad to hear things are finally settling into a routine hopefully Ayaana goes back to a normal sleep time you poor thing! Was wondering if you were still planning on going away for a little while? Or have thing with your hubby got any better? Kathleen you had to get him a haircut? Lucky you I wish Keira had more hair! Her hair is finally getting thicker but I can't wait till it's just a little longer so people can stop calling her a boy!!! Annoys the hell out of me. Oh Cupcake is I had a pic of me breast feeding I would for sure post it on facebook!!! Just saying! Oh and Keira loves the kitchen too but it is baby proof lol I have all the cupboards locked and the garbage under the sink! The dog food is in my entry way so she gets into the water bowl and food when she is down there but I'm trying to teach her not too. Not easy! She also love thje airfreshener and doesn't matter how masny times I say NO she still goes for it. I need it there though cause my dogs have bad gas and they are kenneled in the entryway during the day! Seriously worst gas ever!!! rubylove -

Hopeful- Glad to hear ur friend and baby are doing ok,my cousin had the same problem as her, but just delivered her baby last week,so I'm sure everything will be fine!Kathleen-OMG,Ben is a troublemaker in the kitchen like ayaana lol she tries to eat out of the garbage (eww) and today she was not in the kitchen and I was taking something out of the oven, she just showed up of nowehere and touched the inside of the oven!thank god she didn't burn. They really do grow fast, I hate it too!ur just gonna have to have another one Kathleen :)) Ayaana learned how to get off the bed finally!2 weeks ago, she woke up from her nap(she hasn't slept in her crib since 9 mths) and she fell right on her forehead..thank god my bed is low. anyway the next day,she got up from her nap and walked up to me in the living room..and usually she cries...sometimes they learn the hard way lol rubylove -

Hey girls!I finally got a chance to come on and actually post! The kids are getting back into routine..Ayaana was teething and I didn't even realize, half of her molar is out now..after I came home with baby, she was staying awake until 12-1am, driving my DH and I crazy!she actually fell asleep at 8pm today. She is so cute with the baby, always hugging and kissing her, although i cannot leave baby in her bouncy seat or swing for 1 second!Ayaana even moves her bumper pad in the crib and tries to touch the baby..going to have the change the setting again, since we had lowered it for Ayaana. My 4 yr old is really acting up these days, she loves the baby, but is so jealous of Ayaana!she has started hitting her and doesn't share any toys with her!hopefully she'll adjust soon!My baby girl has been really good so far, pretty much just has her milk and sleeps.I think things will be pretty easy until baby gets to ane age where she's awake more..then things will get interesting lol feeling really happy and blessed though to have my 3 girls :) Anyone going for the next one soon?kathleen112 -

OMG Hopeful that's amazing news!!!!! Ben is quite a good climber despite his no walking status. He can get upstairs no problem and onto the couch no problem. I'm NOT looking forward to the day he figures out how to scale my little barrier that keeps him out of the kitchen 'cause there's no way to gate it. He's such a little rascal in the kitchen. I turn my back for a second and he's in the pantry, fridge or splashing in the dog's water bowl. Cupcake--love that Ben and Ollie are so alike!!! Ben had his first haircut over the weekend and people are already saying he doesn't look like a baby anymore. I really hate to hear that but what do I expect?? Why do they have to grow so FAST?!?! Exclusive--glad to hear the pregnancy is going smoothly! Not sure how you keep up with your LO being so pregnant but I guess you have no other choice. :-) On a side note, both my nephew and best friend's baby were born on Feb 10th (2008) so I can say with authority it's a very good day to be born!hopeful29 -

hey ladies I see the 'are they walking' topic has come up. Well Giana started walking about 2 weeks after she turned 1 in September. She is running now and tries to climb stairs all the time. Being that I am 7 months pregnant...she def keeps me on my toes!! I love it though because this pregnancy went by really quick having her around and caring for the household in general. She is starting to turn her babbling into actual words and trying to form sentences. It''s amazing to watch the change. I myself am scheduled to have a repeat c-section Feb 10, 2012 and can't wait to meet my little man. I live in Buffalo, NY and I am pretty shocked that we don't have any snow yet which means it probably gonna be a very busy winter when it does come.hopeful29 -

So Keira has been able to go up and downstairs no problem for quite awhile now but she is now attempting to go forward by holding onto the rail but it's scary cause she has short stubby legs so it's quite the reach for her to put her foot down. SCARY! At least if she was bum shuffling down I wouldn't be so worried but actually trying to walk down...not cool!!!! Spelfrey I wouldn't worry every baby is different my neice didn't walk till she was 16 months. People try to rush there babues sometimes but I had read the longer your baby crawls the more muscle they will build. You ever try crawling. It take a lot of energy!!! Keira is now becoming a climber trying to climb out of the bathtub and trying to get onto the couch. The bad part is she has no fear so when she is on the couch she throws herself around. Needless to say she has a nice bump on her forhead from taking a fall off the couch on the weekend. I hope she learns about height and falling soon or I'm going to have a baby full of welts! Are they ever going to fix this stupid chat window??? Still waiting to hear about what they plan on doing with me job wise...should have more answers by tomorrow. UPDATE should know more by later today about my friends pregnancy seeing as she has an US today...she is alomost 22 weeks, come on 24 weeks.cupcake83 -

Ollie is not walking yet either - not even close! He can stand by himself for maybe 5 seconds. He cruises round furniture well and will walk holding on to his push-along toys but thats it!!! Tbh tho what did i expect?!?! The boy didn't do much of anything until 8 mths!! Even then he only rolled a handful of times!! lol!!He's so quick crawling that he can get wherever he wants to go that way! Looks like Ollie and Ben are alongside each other again Kathleen!!!! They'll get there and when they are up and walking they will defo not be babies anymore!!!!spelfrey (Shauna) -

Thanks Kathleen! People will ask me if she's walking yet and when I say no, they are like, oh really, mine walked at such and such months. I mean come on, its not like she is going into Kindergarten and still crawling around. LOLkathleen112 -

Hey ladies....creeping over from the 13 month page. When did everyones lo start walking? My is a little over 13 months and still not walking. Not that I'm rushing her at ALL. Just curious. She can stand alone and take 2 or 3 steps but prefers to crawl as fast humanly possible. UGH, why can't I see what I'm typing?hopeful29 -

Well Ollie loves to brush his teeth and loves having his hair brushed!! I would agree with Hopeful, let her do it herself or even do yours at the same time so she likes to imitate you. Really tho don't worry! Fab news that your friends bub is fighting hard. Must be so distressing for your friend tho, Hopeful. Magic 24 wk point hurry up!! Kathleen - Wishing hard for baby Ella. I would be a MESS. Fingers crossed she gets stronger each day. My little bro was born at 31 wks, with momentary loss of oxygen at birth. He has cerebal palsy but with the exception of a weaker left leg he is 'normal'. Bless this little one. My mate had her 3rd daughter 2 wks ago and i met her for the first time the other day, she was teeny! 6lb5! So small compared to my 9lb monsters!! Broooooooody!!!!kathleen112 -

Unfortunately things have only gotten worse with sweet baby Ella. The breathing tube had to be put back in when she was having too much trouble without it and tonight I just heard that she apparently has a bleed in her brain. :-( I'm trying to remain positive but am starting to worry that she will have long term effects from all of this. I just feel completely helpless...can't even imagine how my girlfriend is feeling. Continued thoughts and prayers would be appreciated! Hopeful, glad to hear your friend's baby is still fighting!!!hopeful29 -

Kathleen I'm only a 10 hour drive to NYC not too shabby!! Only a 2 hour flight :)hopeful29 -
Saturday, 3 Dec
the only thing I can think is do you let her do it herself? I brush Keiras gums, well I have (with the finger toothbrush) but there was a point that she just wanted to do it. Now she gets all excited and I make it into a bit of a game and ask her to show me, so when she opens her mouth I always say :you missed a spot let me get it for you' and she giggles and lets me. I guess if anything gets boring and just routine after awhile they'll want nothing to do with it. As for the night feedings is there a reason she isn't sleeping through the night? Is she actually hungry or is it for comfort? Keira only normally sleeps 8 hours unlike most babies at this point that normally get an average of 10 hours but I am still tired so I can't imagine getting up for night feeding still. I would not be able to function! I only breast feed once when she gets up in the morning and right before bed...thinking that I will be stopping that soon though. As for grinding the teeth the ped told me that but I have yet to see a dentist so I'm not sure what it entails. Hopefully her teeth come soon, I feel the bumps just nothing protruding yet! Update baby is still kicking, no labour yet, ultrasound tues sould have more info then. Kathleen how is your friends baby?kathleen112 -

Yay hopeful!!! How far are you from NYC?? Pretty damn far I'd imagine lol.jennni -

Hey guys! Im having major problems trying to brush my daughters teeth! She still feeds several times in the night and noticed a lot of plaque on her teeth. We started brushing after e very meal and for a few days she thought it was fun. Now she fights me and refuses to open her mouth. Im afraid her teeth are going to rot. Anyone got any advice, tips or tricks?
