Your baby, 20 months

32 and older

20 months old Parents and children form special bonds and should have a close and loving relationship. Children that feel secure, protected and cared for are more likely to display good behavior. When your child shows signs of distress, tend to their needs. This shows your child that you love him and care for him.

Children at this age enjoy learning about the world around them. Allow your child to play in the sand, water, dirt and even mud. Yes, it can get messy-but that is okay. Provide your child with a clean sandbox and keep it covered when not in use to keep dogs, cats and other pesky critters out. While bathing, give your child containers that he can pour water into. Allow her to play with measuring cups and spoons, sponges, washcloths, funnels and collanders during this time also. While you are outside, you may choose to give your child a bucket of water and let her `paint` the house, car and other thins with the water. Remember that children should not be left alone with water for any amount of time.

You may notice that your child is beginning to have temper tantrums. She may cry, hit, bite, kick, yell and throw himself on the floor. Sometimes, you may not even know what caused the ourburst. Sometimes children learn that by throwing a tantrum, they can get what they want. Other times, tantrums are simply your child's way of venting frustration or showing that she is hungry, tired or bored. Although there are no magical ways of handling tantrums, you can help your child (and others!) by remaining calm, keeping your child from hurting herself or others, removing your child from an audience and not giving in to the tantrum. Once she is calm, talk to her and let her know that even though it is okay to be upset, her behavior was unacceptable.

Your child might be ready to begin playing with other kids his own age. Keep your child's playgroup small-no more than four children for every one adult. Ask other parents to stay and play. Not only is adult conversation good for you, but the other children will feel more secure with a familiar face nearby. Allow the children to choose their own activities and do not force them to interact. Provide duplicates of toys, if possible, to eliminate arguments. Encourage sharing, but do not expect it. Try to ignore minor conflicts and respond tp bigger conflicts quickly and calmly. The key to a successful playdate is to keep the children busy with simple and interesting activities.

My daughter eats pretty well.. She used to be super picky.. I swear she ate the same thing everyday for like a month.. It was crazy..

Luv.. The company he was with was hit hard by the economy.. There was literally no work.. So they did lay off over half the company.. He was included.. It worked out though.. We took the tax refund and moved outta state =) .. That was back in March.. You have a good memory Lol..

Jake does take vitamins and eats well too. So i don't think that is it. I was showing my neighbor today when our kids were playing out back and even she said unless you see that little piece that is still there, just by looking you would never know this happened. It is just odd. Now if you feel it, it feels flimsy and different and not like a real nail Enh, who knows, unless it looks infected, changes color or starts to hurt him i am not going to stress it.

Precious - Glad to hear your daughter is doing well. Whats up with you all? I think (it has been a while so please forgive me if i am wrong) but you were worred about hubby's job? All ok with that now?
As for the toothpaste, i have floride toothpaste for josh but not Jake. He still likes to suck most of it off the toothbrush ad i am not comfortable with it. Though i do once a week brush his teeth for him, so i do use real toothpaste then.

Oh and for Jake's eating. he has always eaten well and a wide range of foods. but lately he doesn't want his veggies. He will eat fruits and other things, but not interested in veggies. Josh has NEVER eaten well. he is the pickiest kid. Drives me nuts. If he had his choice, the only veggie he would eat is brocolli, he would only eat, eggs, pancakes, poptarts, chicken nuggets, pizza and hot dogs. Oh and cheese balls which just grosses me out!!! He won't touch mac and cheese. Children are strange, the rules for dinner have never changed in this house, so he either eats what is served or doesn't eat. I don't give him a lot, esp if it is new or he doesn't like it but he has to eat it to get something else or more.

Zack takes a half of flinstone vitamin..they are called my 1st vitamins. i was told to put him on it and that he could actually take a whole one cuz of his weight..(but his immunity is extremely low so i put him on them) he has been eating crappy as well. i have to force him to eat. and some how he is back up to 30.4 lbs....he has not ate a full meal in at least a week. justs picks on crackers or a lil here and there from our plates.

hey everyone let me just add as Zack is sleeping in a big boy bed with no rails...it took some time and alot of patience but eventually he just gave in..i did the pillow method around teh bed for a bit to in case he fell out. but now he sleeps and does not fall. well i underestimated to ability of zack for now he can open containers and doors and he is starting to say a whole lot more. oh and he fever finally broke last night and he is back to his constant peeing and drinking just not in the same amounts as before. we had a good night last night. now today my house is disorganized as i am remodling rooms again. so off to cleaning...

Are yall using Floride Toothpaste with your little ones yet?.. When she had her 1st dental check up at 18 months they gave us some toothpaste with floride and told us to go ahead and start using it.. No more than a smear though..

Thank you Luv... Things are good.. Could be better but on the upswing for sure... My daughter is doin great.. Shes gettin so big and learning new things everyday... Shes starting to show readiness signs towards the potty.. Im so confused have no idea how to go about it.. I read and hear conflicting advice Lol..

As for vitamins.. I was thinkin to get her the Flintstones Gummies in a few months.. When I was little I took the chewables..

So I finally made it to the dr, he was arguing with me that it is swine flu, and I was adamant that it's not... so he has put Katy on antibiotics and reckons we should c an improvement tomorrow...as for me, he has me on horse tablets, they r friggin huge, I need 2, 4x a day, he said he was giving me the strongest possiable ones that he can give, and that if I am no better by Monday, I need to go in for a swine flu test, but I truly believe it is just broncitis, the only thing affecting me is a savage headache which is due to the coughing, I have a severe sore throat ( to the point I am losing my voice), temp on and off, and just an annoying cough.... I don't have any of the swine symptoms, they r really taking this a bit to far in my opinon, I told him several times I have not been in contact with any swine flu ppl, all we have is a common cold..... that is pissing me off.....how long do u think till these tablets kick in do u think?

in the u.k you get a card to get free baby vitamin drops when your baby is 12 months old and they stop using formula and change to cows milk. If you wish to use them.

Ah thanks for saying that about Kekoa's eating Bri - makes me feel better about Clem's eating. I was just thinking today how he has eaten hardly anything but crackers for a couple of days! I know they don't specifically need formula (or breastmilk I guess) by this age but I still give Clem 3 bottles a day. He likes it and the one I give him is a toddler formula with all sorts of nutrients in it like omega 3s and probiotics and stuff. I know it's not as good as getting the nutrients through fresh food but sometimes it is reassuring to know he's getting a variety of nutrients through that. Other than that I really do try to get him to have at least a little bit of fruit every day. And luckily, at this point anyway, he's a decent vegetable eater if he's hungry.

Luv that is odd about the toenail. Do you think he might have hurt it when you were not with him? You remember how I squashed Clem's finger in a door, well the fingernail came off after a week or so. But it hadn't gone a really bruised colour. It didn't look totally normal but not black and blue like I expected.

Bita, yes they do. I had liquid pol-vi-sol and tri-vi-sol that Kekoa takes but haven't given it to him for a long time. Maybe I should start giving it to him again. His eating habits have been so off lately. Some nights he eats awesome meals and others not so much. There have been days that it seems like crackers are the only thing he eats. But the vitamins that Kekoa has is the liquid for little ones. We haven't even thought of getting the gummies yet for him.

luv...do you think he might be low on vitmains? nails, skin, n hair are usually the first to get thin n brittle when they are low..do any of yall give ur kids vitamins? i wanna find soem good gummy ones to give my daughter just in case. her food intake is hit or miss...feast of famine lol

well mama, i guess it makes it a little better that it wasn't the green ones, at least the other ones are a bit sweeter or something like that.

Luv, I think he will be fine, Brandon't little toe nails always look they want to fall off, they are so tiny and kind of poke up a bit but i never want to pull at it b/c I know it hurts, I think as he grows it will get better, just make sure it doesn't get too dirty b/c thats pretty soft skin and might get germs or whatever. When I read your second post it changes a bit, its probably just like a new tooth growing in, the old nail probably wasn't a very 'sturdy' one and so the body thought there wasn't one at all perhaps, I don't know I'm just rambling, but like I said, I wouldn't worry.

bek the thing is, is there is no open skin. It looks like the nail split but not like a split that you would think of. It looks like a sheet came off the nail. but the hard part came off and left this very thin, soft nail. Nothing it doesn't seem to hurt him in any way. It doesn't look bad, i was just worried it would catch and then it would hurt. it is very strange. I will take a pic of it tomorrow when he is awake. Thanks though.

Luv: His toe will be ok, just wash it in antiseptic at night, it will grow back.Dylan would always snag his nails or pick at them to the point they fell off, it was bloody disgusting, In the end I put bandaids on it so I didn't have to look at it...lol. Other times they r just so soft that they can come off...it's not as painful as losing a finger nail though....but when he has shoes on, put a band aid over it, so it doesn't rub on the top of his shoe as they can irritate it.

Shelly - I would try taking down the side of the crib again but maybe put up a bedrail instead. that way he can still get out safely at the end where the rail isn't, but still has the security and feeling of a crib. If that doesn't work, i would def put the pillows/mattress on the floor below.

Bita - Glad you are feeling better. Hopefully it was somehting you ate and it is now over and done.

Precious - Welcome back. how is everything going? How is your little girl?

Mama - I love peppers too. Actually jake and i will eat them all the time. It is prob b/c when i was pregnant that is one of my HUGE cravings :-)

I am doing better too. I was VERY ready for the weekend. Hopefully the boys behave and i don't have to hang them up by their toes :-) hehe.
Speaking of toes... One of Jake's toe nails came off today. Almost the whole thing. It was very strange. he never hurt it. It was normal color. Just kinda seperated from the toe. Should i be worried? Cold fungus do this? Should i take him to the doc? is their an OTC thing i could give him? It doesn't look bad, just has almost no toe nail. Just a little bit in the tip of the corner. the rest was unattached so cut it off so it would rip it off. Very strange.

Shelly. If their is no way of keeping him in...put matresses around the cot on the floor, that way if he falls, he has a soft landing. Katy and I are both so sick, heading off to the doc's once she wakes up, I think we both have bronchitis, she coughs all night long to the point of choking, I cough so hard that I throw up, and all my stomach muscles r killing me....this sucks, they say " we can't give u antibiotics, u need to fight it on ure own"..and look what happens it gets a lot worse, our local doc can't fit us both in, so now I am gonna have to go to a medical centre and wait in line for hours.....best thing is it is a shopping mall, so I can do my shopping to pass the time I guess.... I am just so frustrated, my house looks like a torpedo hit it, the beds r all messy, washing piled up to the ceiling, clean washing piled all over my lounges waiting to be folded, dog poo all thru the yard that needs cleaning... the only room I manage every night is the kitchen, but yet that is killing me....arghhhh, I want my house clean!!! Hubby promised to do it, but he bought a new motorbike last night, so he is out with Dylan riding bikes for the day

Mama...are you eating straight bell pepper?? I find that odd, lol. As far as the baby shower theme, I'm going to have to remember that one!

Shelly, I know this wouldn't stop him climbing, but at least it wouldn't be that high. Have you maybe tried just lowering the rail but leaving it on, He won't roll out of it at night, but in the morning at least he doesn't have to stretch 15 feet to climb over, I guess if he hits the ground it won't be that far of a drop, you know?

Well, I'm feeling better today, guess it was just something I ate, who knows. Got to go, hope everyone's day goes well.

Ok Shelly, that's scary. I've known people that have used them to keep cats out and such. Never heard of a child getting tangled in one. I wonder if the one in particular has had a recall? Anyways, maybe it'll just take time. Maybe you'll need to lay with him until he's asleep for the first few nights. I don't expect that when he transition Kekoa to a bed that it'll be easy. I'm sure he'll want to get up and play. He won't want to stay put. We'll see.

Shelly.. Have you thought about those toddler bed rails?.. It might help him feel secure (he wont fall out while hes sleeping) but can also climb down when he wakes up so hes not falling over the side of the crib.. Just a thought.. =)

Bri - i heard of a toddler that somehow got theirs open and got stuck in it and is now brain dead...but like you said too he prob would be afraid of it...he's very 'emotional'

Shelly, there are nets that you can get to place over the top of the crib. Kind of a tent like thing. It would help keep him in but I'm not so sure if he wouldn't be scared of that too since it hasn't been on the whole time.
