You already know how important playtime is to your developing toddler. Playtime is a special time for you and your child to enjoy each other and show love for one another. Play is how your child learns the best and he learns by watching you. Through play, children learn about their world. They learn how things work and they learn how to use their body to make things work. Children learn about the way items feel, fit, stack, look, fall and move. Playing games with your child will encourage them to share and take turns. You should encourage your child to play and set things up to make playtime easy for your toddler. Keep a container of toys in various rooms of the house so that he can play near you. If his toys will be in his room, place toys on low shelves or open containers or toy boxes so that he can easily find what he would like to play with. Encourage a variety of types of play and change his toys out perioically to avoid boredom.
Continue teaching your child about words, but begin putting words into action. Be descriptive. Talk to your toddler while you drive about fast cars or noisy trains. While you are cooking, explain that the stove is hot or the bacon makesa sizz;ing sound when it cooks. This will develop your toddler's vocabulary and teach him about different objects.
At this point, your toddler has most, but not all, of her teeth. Because she doesn't have all of her teeth, be cautious about foods that could potentially choke her. Choking on food is a real danger for children this age and a real scare for parents and caregivers. Foods that children most often choke on are: hot dogs, grapes, candies, nuts, popcorn and lollipop. Other than the grapes and nuts, none of these foods are nutritious. Hot dogs and grapes should be cut into small, bite size pieces-quartered is the best. Never cut them into full circles because the pieces can get stuck in your toddler's throat.
Children respond well to routines. Establish a feasible schedule and routine that you and your child can both stick to. Ding things in the same routine each day will give your child a sense of security and she will learn and anticipate what comes `next`. Plan to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks at the same time each day. Quiet time, naptime and bedtime should also be at the same time each day. Until your toddler adapts to the schedule, remind him what comes next. You can also include other routines such as: getting a bath and getting dressed after breakfast each day, outside time, brushing teeth after breakfast and before bed and other routines that are important in your family.

Thanks for the input - I agree, overall it's cheap piece of mind and I do know she's very qualified. I still think it's the easiest money she'll ever make, lucky girl :)

Lilhill- I pay the 10 bucks for a sleeping baby because it's more than babysitting. It's someone in the house when my kiddie is sleeping. Lights go out, fire, a fall, a cut. I want a smart babysitter who hopefully has little to do. Also, I want the good kids to sit for me. They won't if the money isn't there consistently. My 2 cents.SuperMomTo3 -

We took our girls to see the wizard of oz musical in London yesterday - magic! Matilda was so gorgeous, and Tabitha loved it to. Matilda kept grabbing hold of me and T whenever the bad witch came on - really makes you realise how much trust the put into us to protect them! Had a perfect day :)mybabysuprise -

Citi, that's probably the best choice for you given that you don't want a sick baby when you are recovering from suregery and you don't want him getting sick being on those airplanes. Rubes, they told me Mason was huge. Weighing 11 pounds at birth. He was regular sized and 8.6 pounds. Head normal (although to big to get his shirts over-lol) so your's might be too. Mason was wearing size 12 -18 month size clothes before his surgery on Oct 14. Since, then they took that infection out. (Close to the thyroid) and he shot up and gained do much weight even though he hasn't been eating. He is now over 34 1/2 inches long and 27 pounds and I bought him 24 month clothes and now those don't fit and I had to go get 2T. All in one month, we are broke but I am happy he is catching up. Hopefully this was the magic surgery. 3 times a charmrubes -

Husband got swine flu before i got vaccinated. His ex got it, his kids. Me??? I was fine lolrubes -

I was reading in the surgery (I get bored easy!!!) that I should be get the vaccine. I just don't get sick. Honestly. Rarely ever. And if I do, it doesn't linger. I caught flu a few yrs back, when I was about 12 or 13, and it weakened my immune system a tiny bit, coz prior to that i never got sick EVER, but afterwards, I would get a few colds a year. Nothing to wright home about however. I'm of the opinion, nothing has a 100% guarantee. Not life, not birth control, not medicine. Even simple pills for UTI have a very low risk of asphyxiation. I try not to let things worry me too much or wed never leave the house!!!rls- I♥mythreebabies -

I've had it this year because of being pregnant. My girls had it last year but j was too young. I didn't have it when I was expecting j because it came out righ before I was due to give birth i think and I also considered it relatively untested. If the children were offered it now I would take them for it and feel comfortable with the risk/benefits involved. I would pay for it if I lived in a city and had to do tube/metro stuff as I think there is a high risk of catching it, but here I would say it's pretty low risk. I also have some antiflu viral meds stocked up at home from when the avian flu virus was a big worry. All vaccines carry some risk each person needs to do their research and decide if it's one they are willing to take in order to reduce the chances of catching whatever illness it's supposed to prevent. Drug companies have a vested interest, conspiracy theorists and some scientists do too! citymami -

Rubes and Ris shouldn't you both be getting flu vaccines since you're in third trimester, my cousin's husband and uncle both GP's told me that little kids seemed to have dealt better with swine flu than pregnant women, though when I asked if I should be vaccinated in fall of 2009 before giving birth the GPs in my family were on the fence about it. I had an appointment which I missed because my father passed away that day I think, so with all the funeral arrangements etc I just never got to reschedule before giving birth, but I had decided to go ahead with it.citymami -

FYI UK mommies considering flu vaccine'Fluvirin vaccine by Novartis has traces of thiomersal but none of the other flu vaccines for 2011/12 contain thiomersal!..the recommended dose for children from 6 to 35 months is one dose of 0.25ml or 0.5ml for the vaccine we have' thats a quote from my good friend who is an NHS hospital pharmacist. The UK criteria for flu vaccine is chronic lung disease/conditions like cystic fibrosis, asthma etc. Other than that if a child was hospitalized with a lower respiratory infection such as pneumonia previously they'll offer it but not bronchiolitis - that part doesn't make sense to me. The UK nurse told me 'the doctor says bronchiolitis is not a lower respiratory tract infection' Yet I was told at Columbia hospital NY last year something along the lines of 'Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, which manifests primarily as bronchiolitis and/or viral pneumonia, link is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract (LRT) infection in infants and young children'. I think I'm going to call up the UK doctor on Monday and have Anderson vaccinated against the flu, because I'm concerned about crowds, subways and day care in NYC in the new year. I've mulled over it for a few days and I think that's the conclusion I've come to, this will be Anderson's second year having the flu vaccine, he had it last October. If you want to have your child vaccinated in the UK you can pay £10 and ask your GP. I will have to because the nurse at my GP doesn't know what RSV is... I do worry about the American pharmaceutical giants influencing mass vaccinations and profit being the prime motivation, I think there's probably something cynical going on but at the same time I agree with MYBabySurprise that flu vaccine carries similar risk to many of the other standard vaccines our babies have already had.rubes -

I just emailed the Scotish leader.... Basically, I can't fathom how tuiton is free for EU citizens but not British citizens??? Aren't we all in Europe??? How does that make sense??? Lol.rubes -

That part of the world is always partaking in some silly scientific experiment. One top Swedish university just scientifically proved what we all suspected all along.... That the baby gives a signal to the placenta, signalling it's ready to be born..... Hmmm.... So THAT'S why the Eurozone is in crisis, given HOW they use their money. Haha. I'm a bit skeptical of Europe to be honest, and studies. For instance, the whole calorie method we use all the time (dr approved!!!) was based on a 6 month study in the 1960s or 70s I believe. The people who found the correlation between callorie counting and weight loss actually stood up and said they were wrong, yet we still use it to this day???? I'm a skeptic on studies, and trust my doctor's opinion above all studies, but I trust my own opinion more. :) I vaccinate, I wanted to give Lilia the Swine Flu but my surgery wont give it (I got vaccinated during last pregnancy). I did consider the flu jab for us both, but in all honesty -- we rarely get sick, so it didnt seem like a neccessity to me!!!mybabysuprise -

I'm sorry, but I think it's wrong to scare the crap out of us bc u think Finland conclusively says swine flu vaccine causes damage. The fact is that all vaccines carry some small risk but swine flu is the flu. It was not some brand new non-tested vaccine. Was it or any other tested on babies or pregnant women? No, we do not do that. There is no logic in saying there is an increase risk. Just like there is NO scientific evidence MMR vaccine causes autism. All flu shots now have swine flu in them. Because of this, mason has been vaccinated 3times now, including in utero. The Flu kills. It isn't worth skipping when they go to day care, you live in NYC, or any other place where your kids are exposed to a lot of people, in my opinion m out of all the vaccines you give your kid, this is the one he most likely needs. Not likely he will get polio or mumps, flu absolutly probable. If the Finland study was scientifically proven, all major countries would be on alert and all liability attorneys would be advertising to sue. Just my thoughtscitymami -

thats good news Ris. I need to work on encouraging Anderson to just talk without being coaxed lots. He picks up new words from activities outside best, like 'up' is his favorite word, 'leaf', 'bike'. He's picked up words from books but then doesn't bring them out again often, it's like it takes MANY times for them to sink in for regular use. Anderson doesn't say 'all gone' or 'get up' it's all single words...oh except for 'Oh no' when he rides his bike through a puddle on purpose.I'm taking Anderson to speech therapist to be evaluated when we return to NY in Jan.rls- I♥mythreebabies -

Speech review went well, she was outgoing and confident and the therapist agrees that although she has good vocabulary and sentence skills her pronunciation needs work. They have agrees to put her on the waiting list (about 2 months) to have some sessions. They think it's an issue with recognition of sounds and will send us some booklets and games to play to help her out. I also asked her about Jacob, she said he sounds on target - single words wit hincreasing vocabulary, and said he should start combining words at around 2 or a little while after. He does say 'get up' and 'all gone' but apparently this doesn't count as combining because they are used so often together than they don't need the same verbal development as combining two separate words like 'cat gone' or similar. All in all I feel more positive, at least we now have acknowledgement that there is an issue and are not been told just to wait and see anymore. :) also had a good sleep last night which always helps!!!lilmum2002 -

Ris: Pregnancy dreams or nightmares rather! I had nightmares about killing my baby by mistake by pregnant, like I'd somehow neglect to feed or check on it, an I'd go to the mosses basket and the baby would have turned into porcelain! Really weird I had it repeatedly throughout the pregnancy, I think those hormones just exasperate any anxiety you may have creating terrible nightmares. Roll on your due date I say!! :) You're having another boy aren't you? How wonderful!! and for you too Rubes! When are your due dates Ris and Rubes??
