You already know how important playtime is to your developing toddler. Playtime is a special time for you and your child to enjoy each other and show love for one another. Play is how your child learns the best and he learns by watching you. Through play, children learn about their world. They learn how things work and they learn how to use their body to make things work. Children learn about the way items feel, fit, stack, look, fall and move. Playing games with your child will encourage them to share and take turns. You should encourage your child to play and set things up to make playtime easy for your toddler. Keep a container of toys in various rooms of the house so that he can play near you. If his toys will be in his room, place toys on low shelves or open containers or toy boxes so that he can easily find what he would like to play with. Encourage a variety of types of play and change his toys out perioically to avoid boredom.
Continue teaching your child about words, but begin putting words into action. Be descriptive. Talk to your toddler while you drive about fast cars or noisy trains. While you are cooking, explain that the stove is hot or the bacon makesa sizz;ing sound when it cooks. This will develop your toddler's vocabulary and teach him about different objects.
At this point, your toddler has most, but not all, of her teeth. Because she doesn't have all of her teeth, be cautious about foods that could potentially choke her. Choking on food is a real danger for children this age and a real scare for parents and caregivers. Foods that children most often choke on are: hot dogs, grapes, candies, nuts, popcorn and lollipop. Other than the grapes and nuts, none of these foods are nutritious. Hot dogs and grapes should be cut into small, bite size pieces-quartered is the best. Never cut them into full circles because the pieces can get stuck in your toddler's throat.
Children respond well to routines. Establish a feasible schedule and routine that you and your child can both stick to. Ding things in the same routine each day will give your child a sense of security and she will learn and anticipate what comes `next`. Plan to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks at the same time each day. Quiet time, naptime and bedtime should also be at the same time each day. Until your toddler adapts to the schedule, remind him what comes next. You can also include other routines such as: getting a bath and getting dressed after breakfast each day, outside time, brushing teeth after breakfast and before bed and other routines that are important in your family.

Thanks everyone. I had an awful night last night, obviously mum guilt working over time! I had awful nightmares, waking up crying uncontrollably because I dreamt I had accidentally killed Matilda, them when I realised she was dead (when i took her out the wardrobe!!!) I was trying to hug warmth back into her cold body and I just couldn't bring her back. It was so awful, I just couldn't stop crying and had to go into her room to check she was okay and wakener up for a cuddle!!! But then everytime i tried to sleep the dream would come back. I ended up having to stay awake and still had tears streaming down my face. I finally got to sleep again about 5am so got about 3 hrs sleep in total and have felt weepy and overwraught all day! Work was tough going to say the least!!! SuperMomTo3 -

Ris- You know when Meredith started school she refused to talk. She didn't at all in pre-k, k, or 1st grade. She would quietly talk to other kids if she was talked to. She wouldn't interact or partipate in anything. Then at the end of 1st grade the teacher called me in and said 'we are going to have to hold her back if she doesn't start talking. So we need to use force now. So we gave the teacher to use force with her. So first the teacher told her if she doesn't start talking she can't move on to second grade. I'm not lying from that day on she hasn't shut up. lol. We were so shocked, we did everything from theropy, to doctors, EVERYTHING nothing worked except that. Sadly, the teacher kept her mouth shut for to long and Meredith got held back anyways. Was the best thing we did for her.citymami -

Ris Matilda has all those siblings and an older one, in no way can you feel guilty! that's more socialising than many kids get, trust me. Was Matilda the daughter whose speech you were most concerned about? If so the teacher's report would not come as a surprise, she'll probably take a little longer to find her feet socially than her sibling perhaps. I'm sure if there were any serious concerns they would have been very direct in addressing you about them. My mum was telling me they have these 'awareness' lists in primary schools where children with a question mark over their development are placed on them...sure they would have mentioned something like that if there were real concerns. Gosh I understand that sort of worry and guilt though, I feel it daily with Anderson's lack of talking and feel he wasn't stimulated enough in NYC and it was my fault because I took him to the park to run wild daily, and we didn't sit down together quietly to look at magazines or books too often because he was just a fire cracker, full of energy. We're working on the talking with my mom's help but he's just not expressing himself much spontaneously. Ordered a load of jigsaws off Amazon today, toys and some books for Christmas, we'll probably get them out sooner though so he can enjoy them and get the full benefit of Grandma playing with him.citymami -

Thanks Storm! will get to work reading those now. Just got off the phone with my uncle who's a GP here in the UK and he said he doesn't recommend it (aside from kids with chronic lung conditions etc), which correlates with NHS guidelines here in the UK. On the flip side NYC strongly recommends it.Storms mum -

Rubes- I am convinced it's real. And if I remember correctly GlaxoSmithKline had all the governments in Europe sign a piece of paper saying that they were exempt from any responsibility should their vaccine cause any damages since they didn't have any time to test it before giving it to the public (pandemic fright and all).Storms mum -

Matildas parents evening was tonight, it went okay I suppose, they said she is still more into independent play but does and will play with others if they join in. Does that sound normal for almost 4yrs old? Tabitha was right in the centre of her girl gang by then! I said we had speech therapy review booked for Friday and they agreed it was needed. apparently she is very quiet when she talks at school so obviously not as confident as I thought she was. Makes me feel really sad for her :,( and I wonder how much is down to trevor being the stay home parent instead of me, because he's a bloke he is never invited on play dates etc so our kids miss out on out of school interactions, feel guilty and crappy :( Rubes -

Rubes - Jacob was 10lbs 4oz and had top percentile measurements - I had no tearing or cutting required. Don't worry about it, if your little man is big them take it slow and steady at the pushing phase and give your body a chance to stretch. With Tabitha I had a cut because she got stuck (position related rather than size i think) and it healed quickly so don't be too worried about that either. Rubes -

Storm where's the study from Finland online please? I did read about neurological problems something linked to Guillain-Barre also but this supposedly in less than 1% of cases, even less, very rare. I do worry a lot about the contents of the vaccines though. Anderson had inactivated flu vaccine last year in two doses. He was hospitalized with breathing problems when he had bronchiolitis so part of me is scared of flu causing something similar again. I'm on the fence but leaning toward vaccinating. On facebook my US pals are 50/50 on it. It's strongly recommended in NY though and I have to take the crowds and subways into account there.citymami -

Anderosn's head was off the charts on scan at 38 weeks then they told me that could wel be wrong, well when he was born he was sent for a CT scan at 10 months to investigate macrophely (big head), scan was nirmal it's just genes, but it is in fact very big. I had an episiotomy and was v sore, I wouldn't request anything because you'll know if the baby's going to come out easily or not at the time. You're best to wait and see how labor progresses, t's your second baby so he may come a lot easier. I had the episiotomy because Anderson was in distress and had the cord round his neck to they had to get the forceps to get him out fast.Rubes -

In Finland they have recently found that the swine flu vaccine conclusively causes permanent neurological damage in children. Makes one wonder about all the rest..citymami -

Yes, 24 months is the next check up. Don't stress about being behind. When you get back to the US they will just catch him up on his shots. As for the flu shot, I'm not sure what I want to do. Hunter get's sick to easy, so I'm afraid that if he gets the shot he will get sick. citymami -

OK american mommies I need your help. Anderson's vaccination schedule has been interrupted since I came back to the UK, I know I'm missing a hep A booster that was due late summer. Aside from that, the nurses here in the UK looked at his record and couldn't see meningitis c on it. I will be calling his doctor tomorrow, but was wondering if you guys could tell me when the next set of vaccines is - is it 24 months and can anyone remember if their kid has had meningitis c in the USA? Finally.... American moms are all your kids getting flu vaccines this season, Anderson was hospitalised with bronchiolitis last year so I think he should, sure they would give it to him in NY, but UK is saying it's not a 'lower respiratory infection only pneumonia is' and so he doesn't qualify (I was sure it was a lower respiratory infection). I can pay £10 for him to get which is fine but I'm not sure if he needs it now... They said UK did swine flu for everyone under 5 yrs a couple of years ago but now it's only asthmatics and people with conditions like cystic fibrosis that get flu jab. I hate the way UK doesn't separate the GP office into adults/paediatrics , it means there are not many nurses that specifically deal with paediatrics and to be honest compared to US nurse practitioners they lack knowledge. The next general check-up is 24 months right? I'm so muddled up with being between US/UKrls- I♥mythreebabies -
