You have probably noticed that your two year old wants to be as independent as possible. She does not realize that she still needs help accomplishing things. Because she wants to be independent, you might feel as though you are constantly battling your child over simple, everyday things. Rarely do the battles end nicely with some sort of compromise. Some of the battles you win and your child gets more frustrated and some your child wins, leaving you feeling angry and defeated. Take a deep breath, there is hope! Try to turn all of the battles into win-win situations. If your child wants to eat snack before naptime, allow her to choose her snack before nap and eat it when she wakes up.
Make-believe play is a fun and healthy part of growing up. Children enjoy being superheroes, doctors, moms, dads, teachers and other fun careers. By providing imaginary play equipment, you can encourage your child to use his imagination and be whatever he chooses to be. Join in the fun and play with your child. You have the power to create your child's imagination. You can even make simple props for pretend play from cardboard boxes, paper bags, construction paper and other ordinary objects.
Special occasions can be alot of fun for two year olds. Your child may be invited to a birthday party, holiday celebration or some other event. Explain to your child where you are going and what she is going do do there. Many two year olds find giving a gift to be hard, because they want the toys for themselves. If your child is going to see Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, show him pictures ahead of time and tell him who it is. Once you get to the event, if your child is hesitant about sitting with Santa or the Bunny, do not force him to visit. Let him see the other children visiting and your child may change his mind. At family events, do not force your child to mingle with family members that he is not accustomed to.
Continue to teach your child about colors, shapes, numbers, letters, animal sounds, body parts and other preschool skills. Two year olds love to do arts and crafts. Encourage him to learn these skills through arts and crafts, songs or dance and movement. Make learning fun for your child.

To get Tor to pee in the toilet, I'd put his hand in cold water. That lessens the initial time on the potty and so instead of dealing with a squirmy two year old until it comes naturally, you can get it over with in two seconds and praise them and get to all that good stuff right away. Of course, you can stop doing that once they learn the purpose of the potty. It hasn't been 100% for us because my mother in law isn't on board and she watches him twice a week. However, the only time I've changed a poopy diaper in the last three months was when he was sick and I guess he just couldn't help it. I think he probably poops in his diaper when he's with my mother in law though. He won't tell me he has to poop though; he'll tell me he wants to hide and sometimes he'll try to go in a closet. but we know what's up. lolno2intheoven -

Hi ladies! I haven't been on in forever! Ahhhh two year olds....what can I say? DRAMA, DRAMA, DRRRRAAAAMMMAAAA!! Mia is like having triplets. She is such a handful. Everyday is something new with her attitude. Sandy127962-Mia does the same thing with the shoes. Like this morning, I asked what she wanted for breakfast, raisin toast or waffles. She said waffles. I said Okay, waffles it is. She says No I want toast. I said Okay toast. I wasn't in the mood to go back and forth so I made the toast. Of course she didn't want it. She started screaming and tried to throw it so I put her in time out. I told her see needs to sit down and eat. She said she didn't want it and wanted a waffles. Normally I would've caved in but I need to gain control again. So since she refused I took her upstairs to get dressed and put her toast in a baggy. Gave it to her in the car and expained she wasnt going to have her way. Guess what? She ate the entire thing! I was almost in tears before we left because she's so stubborn but I think if I stay strong I can break this! LOL Wish me luck!!!

panadasmom-Thanks for all the great tips! The potty in the car sounds like a wonderful idea, I wish I would have read this before we went on our beach trip though lol! In the LONG car ride we had to stop so many times! And my son dosen't like peeing on big pottys either, at one point there were no restrooms in sight! So we pulled on the side of the road and he peed in his beach bucket lol! It was cute.pandasmom -

I went back and forth w/ potty training and all can say is as frustrating as it is, once u decide on no diapers, you HAVE to stick to your guns. Changing it back and forth (like I did) only confuses them and prolongs the process. Honestly, roll up the rugs, get out the towels and floor cleaner, and have a 'no pants, no diaper weekend. Ask DD/ DS to sit on potty often and sing songs, get excited just for sitting on the thing-- eventually the pee will come. I even got a potty book (from the dollar bins) and read it to DD on the potty. Imse Vimse trainers helped me in the beginning when we went out. Water proof outer, but wet inner let kids know they go, unlike a diaper that wisks the wetness away. FYI- A full bladder released in these will still leak onto pants, but will save the carseat, stroller, person holding 2 yr old, etc from getting soaked. I used these for outings in the beginning- so worth the $$ because these are 'big girl/boy undies', but still contain messes for the parents. (Gerber training pants were a waste of $$- dont contain pee at all, and only contain poop slightly better than regular undies. DD still has accidents every now and then, but its usually when DD is playing and I forget to ask her to go. We are in regular undies/ cloth diaper for nap and bed only- since we rarely even have accidents in the night, I feel better w/ cloth than w/ throwing away a disposible every night. Plus, i think, DD can still feel when she's wet so it doesnt confuse her again. Oh yeah, and after @2 months of hurrying home to potty when DD had to go (or risk an accident), I had an epiphony-- litte potty in the back seat of mini van- DD refuses to go (or even sit on) a full size potty. I think she feels like shes falling in. Having a potty in the car is GREAT! Im a SAHM, so as bad as the first week was with cleaning pee/poop of fthe floor, when I look back now, Im so glad its over.. .Not sure how long ot wld take if I HAD to put her back in diapers for daycare... GOOD LUCK MOMMIES!!!mfbrown -

sandy-Thanks for telling me about the pad for the carseat I will have to look into that. For the ladies with little ones who are fully potty trained even when out and at night, did you have alot of accidents while in the car or out and about and if so how long did it take before they were fully potty trained? thanks ladiessandy127962 -

La Mama that is a tough one since their bladders are so small but if we are in a store we use the public restroom. I make sure I use the toilet covers and hold her so she doesn't fall in. You can also get a pad for the carseat. I think I got mine in Babies R Us when my first was born. It just fits under their butt and absorbs any leakage.La Mama -

As for potty training, my little man dose great at home, I always leave him in underwear and he will pee and poop in the potty he wears pullup for bed and naps as well. But here is my thing, I'm scared to have him in the carseat with underwear and no pullup?..... I'm worried that during the drive what if he has to pee or poop and I cant get to a restroom fast enough! Also I hate public restrooms and scared to put him on those toliets. What do you ladies suggest, what do you do when your out? Please help!!La Mama -

Hi ladies! hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their summer! Jae is potty trained and the only issue we have is #2. She has always delt with constipation issues do to her poor diet (PICKIEST EATER EVER!) but now she has gotten into the habit of holding it in. Longest stretch we went was 8 days without a poop. I have been giving her prune juice mixed with apple and those fiber one bars, those seem to help and she realized she can't hold it any longer and then she goes. Still wears a pull up at night and naps but usually its dry :) Her attitude is HERE! She is independent and wants to do EVERYTHING herself and she will def let you know :D lol! We literally JUST put her in a toddler bed, last ngiht was the first night and it didn't go so well. Lots of tears and protests and a very late bed time. She woke up around 2am upset but i calmed her down and she went right back to sleep. The transition was overdue as I am due with our third child this October. So, had to get her outta the crib and in with her older sister. This will def be and experience, the two older kiddos sharing a room. Especially when school starts back up and my oldest has to get up at 6:30am! i really don't want jae getting up that early, we'll have to see how this goes. I am actually considering as soon as i get get the new baby to sleep thru the nihgt, room in jae and the new baby and put our oldest in her own room. We'll see.. Anyways, things are going well, Jae talks up a storm and i can understand just about 98% of what she says, sometimes she'll say something and i don't get it and i'll tell her i don't understand her, she looks at me like i'm an idiot :D lol!! Hope you are all doing great, i do check in from time to time so its good to see some familiar names still here :)sandy127962 -

Hi all busy busy over here.Suzm Emma is still wearing some 18 month pants and now starting to wear 24 months. She is a tiny one but huge on attitude. We are trying to potty train here because she sees her older sister using the toilet and wants to. She does ok in the peeing department but she has to take a laxative every other day so it is difficult. I keep trying though. She unfortunately got into the habit of holding in her poop and now as a result we have to give her miralax ever other day and thankfully she loves fruits and veggies so that's not an issue. She is so terrible two I want to say. When getting dressed she will say I want my sandals and then I get them and it's no I want my sneakers so I go get them and then it's back to wanting sandals and I say sorry you said sneakers she will throw a fit and end up in the corner..UGH I am thankful it is only a phase..suzm -

Hi -- I decided to pop in to see if anyone was around and it looks like a few of you have checked in! My Miss Maddy is also wearing 3t, but can still wear some 24 month shorts and capris from last summer because she's so skinny! She is about 36.5 inches - not sure of weight. She is always a trip - obsessed with movies right now - Sleeping Beauty, Wizard of Oz, Toy Story. She loves Disney books and characters. We are lucky she has been potty trained since December. She wore cloth diapers so I think that had something to do with it that she could feel when she was wet. I am pregnant again and have been feeling horrible, so I have been laying around a lot and she plays that she is putting me to bed just like I do her. She gets my books, and milk, and kisses me and tells me not to pee the bed. Too cute. Oh I miss her... spencerbaby1 -

hey ladies, i too have not been on in forever. things are going well here, hard to believe my girls are 28 months and 17 months! hubby and i are talking about maybe a 3rd. potty training is still a work in progress for us. Avah refuses to sit on the potty anymore and insist to be on the big toilet. she wont tell me before she goes but wants her diaper off as soon as she pees. so maybe i should get the cool alert pull ups or something? coli -

We are also not potty training yet, Evan has sat on his potty, and went once but hasn't gone again yet. He tells me no I go in diaper. So we are trying, not going to push until he's ready. i havent been on in forever either! i hope everyone and their little ones are doing well!! DJ and i are doing great! hes hilarious as ever. i wrote this as my status on facebook today but had to share it on here too because its so funny: DJ always says 'I want (this or that)' and I always reply the same thing... so today he said 'but I WANT to ride my bike' (i had said no because it was raining) then quickly added 'and I know mom, u want a vacation alone to a tropical island but we can't always get what we want' I almost peed my pants laughing!! haha hes too much! :) we havent started potty training yet but we're going to start this summer. i know hes just not ready yet. i try to sit him on the potty once in a while and hes just not sure what to do but we're going to keep practicing. i cant wait to be diaper free! otherwise hes doing great and growing like a weed. hes about 37 inches tall and probably around 31-32 lbs. hes in 3t and 4t shirts depending on the brands, 3t pants and 8 1/2 shoes. yikes! haha he loves to ride his tricycle but a friend of ours gave us his sons old big boy bike with training wheels so DJ used to just ride it in the basement but now he rides it in the driveway with his helmet and elbow pads. he looks so stinking cute and hes excellent on it now! i'll post a new picture of him on my page today. sassyscissors(Tracy) -

My Kylie has been fully potty trained for over 2 months now...but that is pretty early..I have heard that boys tend to be a little later...as for the bottle, I have no advice, I nursed until 11 months and basically went straight to the cup. I think the longer you nurse, or use a bottle the harder it is to get it away from them.. My pediatrician has told me to introduce my 6 (now 7) month old to a cup.JaguarEyes -

Seph started preschool in Jan, three days a week and we have all been sick twice! He was literally sick three times his whole life before we started preschool. Oh well. Building immunity, right? And I actually have it the worst right now. So, does anyone else's toddler have a terrible two one minute and super sweet the next type behavior right now? He likes to watch 'How to Train your Dragon' and I affectionately refer to him as my 'Tiny Terror' because those are the small dragons, but they like to snuggle too. Alternatively my little snuggle dragon and a tiny terror. And it can change within a minute, I swear!!momentfrozenintime -

We have many viruses going around right now, plus the flu and RSV (usually with babies). It's nuts! Colin is coughing and has a runny nose, but apparently all the kids at his daycare have it now. As long as it doesn't get worse, that's ok! I think all kids are sick right now!Cailet -

Poor Lex! It's so sad when they are sick. We're HOPING we are finally better. Both little ones have had ear infections followed by a virus. My 12 year old has the virus now and hopefully she will be the last to get it. Larkyn loves the V8 v-Fusion drinks. We have trouble getting Parker to eat vegetables and his doctor had suggested we use this to get some into him, and they both really like it. momentfrozenintime -

Poor Lex had a stomach bug today :( woke up early this morning and he had diarrhea and his diaper leaked so that was a mess to clean up. And daddy slept in bed with him. Lol. I was just thinking his stomach must have been hurting last night because he never poos at night and he was acting normal. Then when I got everything cleaned up and I went to get him dressed he wanted me to hold him and sit in my lap and sort of cradle him. He was acting all pitiful and I knew something was wrong and he threw up all over me and the sofa! Luckily he already had a doctors appointment that morning to re-check his hemoglobin so that eased my mind. Doctor just said its probably a bug and gave us the normal rundown for a restricted diet and such. But good thing is his hemoglobin is up from a 10 to 14! In a month which I think is good! I've started him on the Flinstone vitamins plus iron, and occasionally giving him V8 juice but the fruit flavored kind since that has a serving of veggies in it and I found these great little cereal bars that have 20% daily iron. He threw up once more this evening and had diarrhea again but I think its because he didn't eat nothing all day and then pigged out on saltine crackers and ate too many. He went to sleep at 5:00 though and usually he doesn't go to bed until 8 or 9. So hopefully the extra rest helps him feel better tomorrow :) leighsamarie -

I feel you mrs.error!! It is hopefully just a phase, though! Sometimes, the only way I can get Colin to nap is to rock him. It's weird, but I take it if it will work!mrs.error08 -
Tuesday, 18 Jan
Lexane has officially dropped his one and only nap :( It's a 2 hour nap and I really think he needs it because he's so cranky by the end of the day and his eyes look so tired in the evening. Sometimes he'll fall asleep around 5 and want to take his nap then but then he's not waking up until 7 and bedtime is at 8! So he doesn't want to go to sleep. I just wish he would pick this nap back up and it would make things so much easier
