32 and older

3 months old This month your baby will begin staying awake for much longer periods of time. Your baby is happier and she does not cry as often as she previously was. There will be many opportunities for learning and sharing throughout the day. Interacting and playing with your baby will encourage her to learn. Your baby enjoys swatting at toys and may be able to grasp them occasionally.

Get ready for lots of laughs and giggles. Your baby still loves when you smile at her and she can now laugh at you. Babbles, coos, smiles and laughs are all part of her developing personality. Let her know just how much you enjoy hearing her laugh by laughing back. When she babbles and coos, do it back.

Some babies enjoy being held and rocked more than others, and that is okay. All babies are different. If you have a cuddly baby, take this time to enjoy it. Rocking and cuddling are good for babies and make them feel secure and comforted. All babies need to be held and soothed, and not just when they are crying. Show him just how much you love him and care about him. Babies like gazing you in the eyes. You can play simple games with your baby now, too. Peek a boo and `This Little Piggy` are favorites for many babies. Read to your baby daily and sing songs with her. If your baby starts to get fussy, it is time to stop.

Babies this age are becoming interested in toys. They do not need to be expensive or even store bought toys. When choosing toys, you need to be careful about what you allow your baby to play with. Do not buy anything that can fit inside of their mouth. Toy should not be made with anything that could break off or splinter. Never give your baby anything with sharp edges or corners. Make sure that older siblings understand that their toys may be dangerous for the baby.

Make your baby's room bright and welcoming. You could paing the walls, hang brightly colored pictures and add fun accents to make your baby's room interesting for him. Babies still do not need pillows or blankets. They are suffocation hazards and should be used only for decorative purposes. You can add a mirror on the wall above the changing table, or pictures of family and friends.

Your baby may start trying to hold his bottle at this point. Do not prop the bottle with blankets or anything else. This can cause ear infections. Rather, use this time as bonding time between you and your child. Breastfeeding should be well-established at this point. You can also pump your breastmilk and store it for others to feed the baby. Most babies want to eat every 4 hours and are consuming higher amounts.

If you ever find yourself getting frustrated with your baby, put the baby in her crib and call a friend or family member to help with the baby. Babies do not do things to frustrate you on purpose, and it is totally acceptable to need a break once in a while. Make sure you never shake or hit your baby. This can cause severe damage or even death.

Developmental Milestones 3 Months Old

Physical
  • Your baby may be able to lift her head while laying on her back and hold it for several minutes
  • Some babies can hold their head steady and erect while in a sitting position
  • When on his stomach, he will lift his head and chest as to do mini push ups-offer encouragement by sitting in front and dangling a toy
  • Babies can now wave their arms and kick their legs
  • Kicks are getting stronger
  • When being held up, your baby should push down on their legs
  • She can bring both hands together and open fingers
  • Can roll over one way
  • Your baby can focus on very small objects

Intellectual
  • Will swat at toys-encourage her by holding a toy in front and see if she will grab it
  • Many babies will sleep through the night around this time
  • Clear recognition of mom and dad
  • Your baby will look directly at you and gurgle when he hears your voice
  • Enjoys being read to-read to your baby everyday to develop language skills
  • Enjoys bright colored objects
  • Has a rapidly developing memory
  • Enjoys the feel of different objects-allow your baby to touch a variety of textures
  • Your baby may smile at herself when she sees herself in the mirror
  • Laughs out loud
  • Has more established routines
  • Makes sounds like `ah goo`

Emotional
  • Is attached to the main caregiver
  • Familiar with parents faces and siblings
  • Your baby will smile at strangers
  • Likes to hear you talk-tell her about everything you do
  • Touching, caressing, carrying, rocking and massaging are great ways to relax your baby
  • Becoming more animated and social-flashes smiles and gugles and coos
  • Turns towards the sounds of familiar noises

Jenny33- COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!! Our little one (3 months) eats at 9:30, 2:30, and 6:30. She's doing awesome if she sleep that long! How do you do it? Is she BF?

jenny33 - Monday, 16 Nov
Hey ladies,my daughter turned 3 months on Saturday and she laughed out loud for the first time over the weekend it was the cutest thing :)She is such a happy baby and a pretty good sleeper, she goes down about 7:30pm and gets up at 4:30am for a bottle and goes back to sleep for another 4 hours. I am exhausted though because once I'm up at 4:30 for her feeding theres no sense in me going back to sleep since I have to be up about 5:30 to get ready for work, I can't wait till she goes to bed a little later at night so she can wake up a little later in the morning.

LauraID - Monday, 16 Nov
litlepixie-good to hear from you!! I miss all the ladies from my pregnancy week! Well Ingrid turned 3 mo old today! And the past three nights has only gotten up once between 10pm & 6:30am. So we are hopefully getting back on track after 3 weeks of chaos! How is everyone else doing??

joelisa - Sunday, 15 Nov

jeneriksbaby- that makes sense to me. I go by month my lo will be 14wks 2moro(in a couple hrs lol) & he'll be 4months old on dec 10th.

Well so far my son only rolled over 3times since I 1st saw him do it on 11/2. He hasn't really been in the mood 4 rolling. B/c he been super fussy since he startd teething. Poor little guy & me since I'm hardly getting any sleep. His dad is always going out leaving me to take care of a fussy baby. I just want my happy baby back. Hopefully he's not fussy when he takes his pic 2moro. Can't wait!

jeneriksbaby - Sunday, 15 Nov
Hey are you guys going by weeks for keeping age or by months??? Because Axel will be 16 weeks but won't be four months until Dec 2nd?? does this make sense??

littlepixie - Sunday, 15 Nov
Hi All. Havent been here in ages as my laptop is dead :( so i am poping on here while at my mums :) My DS is 13 weeks 3days now and sleeps 11pm-12am til around 6-7 am. Its fab. But he is a terror to get to sleep. SCREAMS AND SCREAMS! He is a very angry baby and a huge attention seeker. I am now trying to do the 'letting him cry it out' its not easy, but sometimes its all i can do, as even if i cuddle him he fights and screams. He is lovely in the morning though, all smiles! and ive been giveing him tastes of food too, he loves it! and eats so well. he is now 17 lbs 8 oz. Lil pudding

gigijey - Saturday, 14 Nov
I was told on multiple occasions that feeding them solids so earlier (earlier than 6 months) increases the risk of them developing food allergies. I really wanted to start solids when my little one is 3 1/2 months because she is developmentally advanced and I think differently now. I will wait until she is 6 months and then start with solids. She is one week short of being 3 months old and I just will have to wait, although I really would love to feed her from a spoon. I can't wait!

soon2b3mom - Saturday, 14 Nov
I fed Larissa some rice cereal yesterday for the 1st time and she loved it! I know she is only 3 months and it may seem early but she ate great and then slept through the night for the first time 10:30 - 5:30. She couldn't have actually taken in more than 2 tbs but still enough to help fill her.

1stTimeMom20 - Friday, 13 Nov
ok so my lo is will be 4 months on the first of december and the other night i gave him his first baby food (carrots) and he LOVED it and did really good eating it. i have given them 2 him 3 times now. is it 2 soon 2 be giving him solids???

joelisa - Friday, 13 Nov
My lo finally slept in his crib for almost 7hrs. He has been sleeping with us ever since he was 3wks old. I just gave it a try & what do you know he stayed sleep. Usually he wakes up as soon as you lay him down. It wasn't the usual 8 or 9hrs of sleep he gets with us, but @ least it was 7hrs by himself. Hopefully he does this every night but I doubt it. Also my son has been very fussy lately my mom said he had teething poop when she changed him, me & the rest of the ppl on her side of the fam had cut our 1st tooth @ 4months old. He'll take naps for 10-15mins & be fussy again ugh its been hard.

LauraID - Friday, 13 Nov
YMM- Our pediatrician also told us that if the baby is not sleeping 5ish hours in a row by 3/4 months old, that it is most likely habitual. My daughter is doing the same thing, getting up every 2-3 hours at night. She USED to sleep through the night, and I am totally confused whether she is getting up due to habit or because she is actually hungry......I'm in that same boat.

monselena - Thursday, 12 Nov

advice wanted - ok moms I need comments. Danielle had to see a different doctor today. He asked how often she gets up at night to eat and when I said every 2-3 hrs, and said I need to get some discipline going. He told me to only allow her to eat once each night. I have always fed on demand. Danielle is 8 weeks old and weighs 9lbs 6oz. She is in the 25th percentile and I don't want to cut back on her feedings, nor do I feel the need to get some discipline going with an 8 wk old baby. Please cooment!!

stacky - Thursday, 12 Nov
LauraID- Have you tried swaddling her? My daughter is 3 1/2 months now and has been sleeping through the night for months...she will sleep 9 hour stretches almost every night. Try wrapping her up (you can get a kiddapodommus (sp?) swaddler from like target or Walmart or baby's r us. It works wonders unless its something else going on. You can also try the Happiest baby on the block DVD from Amazon.com. I hope you can find something that helps soon!

nikkic204 - Thursday, 12 Nov
I miss being pregnant too!!! hehe I though i was the only one! I was miserable because i was so big, but i miss being able to at least sleep through the night, plus i miss the belly, too! I know a lot of pregnant ppl now too and i admit i'm a little jealous also!

LauraID - Thursday, 12 Nov
Okay, I am seriously going to freak out. My daughter is almost 13 weeks, and for the past 3 weeks has been up every 1.5-2 hours all night. Last night the longest stretch she slept was 3 hours, then was up every 1.5 hours after that. She WAS sleeping through the night (or getting up only once) from 4 weeks old. She wakes up fussing, so I try to feed her and she latches on, but doesn't eat (at night during her frequent waking) I am out of ideas. Anyone who could offer any advice or encouragement??? Can this issue be fixed? (ps-this past week she DID have 2 nights where she only woke once....)

jerika - Thursday, 12 Nov

lyrehc-that's so funny, I was JUST getting on to ask the exact same question!!!! All day today I just feel depressed that I'm not pregnant anymore. I would give anything to be 9 months pregnant. I have a lot of friends who are pregnant right now, and I am SO jealous. Which is stupid, I so love having my beautiful daughter. I just want to do it all over again! I don't know if it's just postpartum hormones or waht, but I really miss it!

lyrehc - Wednesday, 11 Nov
