Half of a year has gone by and your baby has grown and learned so much! At this point, she may be sitting up on her own and some babies will try to crawl! Encourage him by setting toys out of his reach. In no time, he will be crawling all over. Some babies also roll across the room! Your baby can turn and twist in all directions. She can transfer objects from hand to hand and will look for dropped objects.
Many babies will start teething at this time. You may notice that she is uncomfortable, drooling and bites down alot. Teething rings often help and the coldness can be soothing to her sore gums. If she doesn't like a cold teether, offer her a warm one instead.
Stranger anxiety usually increases by the time your baby is six months old. She knows the difference between people she recognizes and strangers. When you introduce your baby to new people, hold her and tell her about who the person is. Your baby will be able to sense how you feel about the new person. Don't force your child to sit with the person- let him set the pace. This is especially important with caregivers that take care of the baby while you are away.
Your baby still likes to be read to and likes to hear songs and music. Expose him to various sounds, sights, smells and textures often. Alot of your baby's learning comes from hearing. Because he likes other babies, take him to see other babies as often as possible. Watch how they interact. Your baby is learning about relationships!
Being a warm and loving parent will teach your baby to trust and respect you. If you find that your baby is doing something that he should not be doing, redirect him to an appropriate activity. At this age, your baby still does not know how to obey or disobey. However, he is learning to listen and can begin to understand what he should not mess with. After you have redirected him, remember to praise him for a job well done. Your baby will learn best and can not get into trouble if her world is interesting. Keep fun activities readily available and interact with her. Showing your baby how to do things the right way will also help her learn. If she pulls your hair, show her how to be gentle.
Most babies will have started some type of solid foods at this point. If you give your baby something that he does not like, keep giving it to him. It can take several attempts to get him to like something. The food habits that are learned now will stay with your baby for life. By giving her a variety of foods, you are expanding her taste and encouraging healthy eating habits. Allow your baby to sit in her highchair and eat with the rest of the family at mealtime. Babies will ususally eat until they are full-do not force her to eat if she does not seem interested. Some parents give their babies juice or water in a cup at this time. Because juice is high in sugar, limit her juice intake to 4 ounces a day. Remember, now that your baby is eating foods it is especially important to keep her teeth and gums clean. Wipe them down with a washcloth or use a baby toothbrush. Do not use any type of toothpaste that has fluoride in it.

shabs78: I will get better! With the cry-it-out method, it always gets worse before it gets better. I read it often peaks on the 3rd night and then gradually gets better over a period of a few days. My LO is 3 months and we used this method..it was very effective! For the first few nights, she would cry really hard for about 20 minutes before falling asleep. A few days later, it went down to like 15. Now, she often doesn't even cry when we put her down and when she does, its usually only for 5 minutes. Good luck!babylovex4 -

Hey ladies! Just checking in with all of you! Ruby is doing great! She is 14 lbs, 25.5 inches long. About 25%-ile on everything. She can sit up, unsupported, for several seconds and is constantly alternating between pushing up her upper body and then her chunky little butt! So cute! I think her first tooth is on the way but I don't see it yet...just a bulge. How big are your babies and what are they doing now?shabs78 -

Thanks Brisbane. I've been giving my Ava water from a cup so I'll stop for a while and see what happens.. Have any of you started feeding any of your LOs anything besides baby food? Ava has two bottom teeth and can eat the Gerber puffs.. that's all I've been brave enough to try. At first I would wet them and get them soft before I fed them to her... Lol wowwee -

Amanda: Ava was refusing the breast for a little while, partly cause she was/is distracted and partly from teething, or maybe she just enjoyed eating and running from her cup too much. I have slowed down on giving her fluids from a cup for now to see if it makes a difference. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference but maybe a little:)!Amanda220 -

My little girl is 7 and a half months and has lost a bit of weight. She was a bit over 16 and now she's a bit below 16 lbs. I know it's not much but she's small anyway. She's been refusing to take her bottles! Yesterday she had 2.5 bottles totaling 10.5 oz! This little girl is stressing me out. Of course she did eat probably 5 oz of oatmeal, half a jar of squash, and a full jar of bananas. What do y'all think?mommajess -

Camille went yesterday for her check up...she weighs 18lb 11oz and is 26.5 inches long. So she isn't nearly as big as my son was...LOL he was 22lb and 28inches at 6months old. Now he is 2 (3 in April) and comes up to my waist. He's gotten so big...so fast. I wish we could just freeze time and keep them like this forever! I don't want my kids to grow up. They are so sweet just the way they are. Anyway...Camille is healthy and has a moderate case of eczema that we are watching because she cries a lot...and those things put together could indicate an allergy...not excited. Glad everyone is well!wowwee -

Sorry for the long message, I agree go with what works for u and your baby, I got stressed with my first too and he never slept!! I was prepared with Ava and bought a co-sleeper (I swear by it) she is still sleeping in it. It means I don't get out of bed in the middle of the night, I don't turn on lights, etc so less stimulation. I also have blockout blinds and blockout curtains on all my windows to darken the rooms, this helps with day-time naps too. Amanda my first was the same and I had to work 4 days a week, I know how exhausted you are, I travelled an hour to and from work. The only difference is he came with me to work, so I listened to the screaming all day at work too. The only way he slept was in a baby sling. I must say this continued with him till after 2 bouts of vomiting and diarrhea the doctor told me to put him on a non dairy formula and he started sleeping better at night. May not be your prob though, but he never went back on dairy!! Ava also loves to drink from my glass and she loves cold water but also soda water!! It was the only way I could get her to start taking stuff from a bottle. She will now drink cold breastmilk from a cup or bottle!!Brisbane-mama -

Shabs78: I still feed (breast) Ava once a night, I figure it helps with both supply and fertility (I am not taking anything ATM). If she wakes more then that I try to ignore it, but if she gets herself upset I will feed her for s very short time like 5 mins then place her back to bed to self settle, I will rock the cot till she settles then stop. If she continues to cry I will do it again feed for a short time place her back in then rock it for a short time. She eventually gets the point that I am not getting her up and she is not getting my attention. I don't turn on the light and I do not talk to her just hush her. If she is playing I leave her to play till she falls asleep or gets upset. Ohh Ava is not perfect she was waking at 1 and 3am this week for a few nights, I just keep persisting. I also find now they are over 6 months it helps if you let them cry for a little bit too. For some reason it works, that is you may need to go back in and settle but just leave it a little longer each time between settling. I do this usually at the 7pm bed time, usually if she starts this playing up during the night. She needs to get out some energy and I am having my dinner and sorting out her 4 year old brother so physically I can't be there every-time. Then after a week of twice a night waking last night she went back to 3am wake and settled nicely. It just helps to do it sometimes, try it once you have her settled. But if she is waking once a night and you are happy to continue feedi g her I say do it, I will till I am ready to give up Breastfeeding, after I cut the night feeds with my son at 10 months my milk dried up!! And if it makes her settle back to sleep go for it. I think Ava wakes cause she is thirsty not hungry, she has a dry mouth, my son has a drink bottle and will quite often have a drunk in the middle of the night so I don't see why a baby wouldn't want one too, :)!Amanda220 -

oh, and for naps, my second dd only napped in her baby carrier until she was one lolso i bought an Ergo and went with the flow! Around one, she finally started napping on her own. I think sometimes we get so caught up in what we 'should' do, and it leaves us more stressed than just listening to our babies needs. Especially when you hear horror stories of what your baby will be like if you dont. Every baby is different. Setting high expectations of forced scheduels is so exhausting for new parents! Everything evens out naturally sooner or later. I for one know that I stressed myself out beyond belief with my first wanting to do everything by the book. With my 2end, I learned to relax and go with the flow, and that resulted in a much happier (and more relaxed!) mommy and baby!

they eventually start sleeping through the night, i promise! I tried thy cry it out method with my first and regret it horribly. Turns out she was having seizures at night and that is why she was waking up. with dd #2, i co slept and when she did wake up, she would just latch back on and id get to go right back to sleep. Same thing this time around...she might get up once and its literally only for a minute. i know thats not a realistic option for everyone though. the only thing regarding sleep that i can offer is to minimize stimulation during nighttime wakings. also, have you tried putting a fan in the room for some noise? that helped my first. gl
