6 months old Half of a year has gone by and your baby has grown and learned so much! At this point, she may be sitting up on her own and some babies will try to crawl! Encourage him by setting toys out of his reach. In no time, he will be crawling all over. Some babies also roll across the room! Your baby can turn and twist in all directions. She can transfer objects from hand to hand and will look for dropped objects.

Many babies will start teething at this time. You may notice that she is uncomfortable, drooling and bites down alot. Teething rings often help and the coldness can be soothing to her sore gums. If she doesn't like a cold teether, offer her a warm one instead.

Stranger anxiety usually increases by the time your baby is six months old. She knows the difference between people she recognizes and strangers. When you introduce your baby to new people, hold her and tell her about who the person is. Your baby will be able to sense how you feel about the new person. Don't force your child to sit with the person- let him set the pace. This is especially important with caregivers that take care of the baby while you are away.

Your baby still likes to be read to and likes to hear songs and music. Expose him to various sounds, sights, smells and textures often. Alot of your baby's learning comes from hearing. Because he likes other babies, take him to see other babies as often as possible. Watch how they interact. Your baby is learning about relationships!

Being a warm and loving parent will teach your baby to trust and respect you. If you find that your baby is doing something that he should not be doing, redirect him to an appropriate activity. At this age, your baby still does not know how to obey or disobey. However, he is learning to listen and can begin to understand what he should not mess with. After you have redirected him, remember to praise him for a job well done. Your baby will learn best and can not get into trouble if her world is interesting. Keep fun activities readily available and interact with her. Showing your baby how to do things the right way will also help her learn. If she pulls your hair, show her how to be gentle.

Most babies will have started some type of solid foods at this point. If you give your baby something that he does not like, keep giving it to him. It can take several attempts to get him to like something. The food habits that are learned now will stay with your baby for life. By giving her a variety of foods, you are expanding her taste and encouraging healthy eating habits. Allow your baby to sit in her highchair and eat with the rest of the family at mealtime. Babies will ususally eat until they are full-do not force her to eat if she does not seem interested. Some parents give their babies juice or water in a cup at this time. Because juice is high in sugar, limit her juice intake to 4 ounces a day. Remember, now that your baby is eating foods it is especially important to keep her teeth and gums clean. Wipe them down with a washcloth or use a baby toothbrush. Do not use any type of toothpaste that has fluoride in it.

It will get better you can see already she put herself back to sleep. My lo doesn't have a nap during day unless I take him out for a walk, so I walk for an hour or so a day as soon as he starts to get restless I wish I could just put him in his cot but he won't fall asleep even though he goes to bed perfectly well at night. All babies have their quirks I guess!!

shabs78 - Thursday, 12 Jan
thanks wowwee... anyone else letting their babies 'cry it out'? This is the third night and it seems to be getting worse rather than better. The only conselation i've had is that last night she didn't wake up screaming at 2am, instead she kinda cried and whimpered for a couple of minutes at around 2 and 4am and then put herself back to sleep. So thats something. still not napping during the day properly though and its taking up to 30 mins of her screaming so loudly at night. please tell me this will get better :(

momajess, we all deal with thingsvdifferently!!! i find myself making a sour face and biting my tounge! Em had her 1st shots at her 6 month check up...broke my heart!!! i always make dh come to shot appointments bc i cant bring myself to hold them down! i play the rescuer role lol

mommajess - Wednesday, 11 Jan
can't believe that we have made it to 6 months! Time is flying by :) I'm so proud of my sweet Camille. She is doing fabulously. I take her on Monday for her 6 month check up and another round of shots. Both of my kids have always done well with shots (no fever or fussiness afterwards and I really believe it is because I alter their shot schedule so they don't get so many at once). So I'm not worried about how she'll do afterwards. I do hate that they hurt and make her cry. Something funny, but almost mean about me is that my reaction when my kids cry over shots is to laugh. I think it is just how I mask the fact that it hurts me for them and this way I don't cry in front of the nurse and doctor. I don't know but I can't help it. It's like uncontrolable laughing. I do it even when my 2 year old hurts himself at home. IDK...I hate that I react that way, but I do...so what do ya do?

Shabs I feel for you sorry your having rough time ATM

brisbane - thanks for your advice, im trying the 1 hr 40 minute thing now. Its so difficult. I've been good today by not giving in and rocking her to sleep and after screaming for 40 mins she's asleep. Now im wondering what to do about when she wakes up in the middle of the niht? she alawys wakes up around 2am and if i offer her the bottle she refuses it but is quite happy to suck on my nipple!! your advice is greatly appreciated :)

Brisbane-mama - Saturday, 7 Jan
Ava is 7 1/2 months but it is quiet in that room. She is eating meat now, well boiled and blended chicken breast. And she sucks on steak too. She is holding food and loves to feed herself. I finally got her to suck from a cup and a bottle, only cold water ATM but hoping to transition to milk soon, well for the days she goes to Kindy. She starts Monday but I haven't got a job yet so no pressure ATm to have her drinking from bottles as she will only go for a couple of hours. She is sitting unassisted, trying to crawl, saying mum , dad dad (she is not saying it to us yet) and waving (well kinda). She seems to try to repeat what we say but misses out consinants and vowels. She is still a pretty good sleeper but, she still sleeps in her Arms reach co-sleeper beside me (I love it and don't know what I would do without it). She does however play up when she is overtired and I have to rock her co-sleeper and lay next to her like now (we were at a party and it is 10:30pm)!! She has recently cut her 2 bottom teeth too!

Shabs78: sorry to hear your still having a hard time with sleeping and your little girl, definately not worth tears for you or her though!! Something must be wrong if it's escalating to that level. Sleep school = a place you take your baby and you both go, sometimes it's a day or 2, and sometimes for a week. They have trained professionals there who watch you and your baby then help you to train your self settling techniques!! The key is Shabs not to let her get too tired, 1 hour and 40 mins after she wakes have her back in bed to settle back to sleep. If you aren't even at that stage yet, put her in her bed to play when she is happy, have toys in there and be doing things close by her so she can see you, leave her there to play while she is happy, take her out if she becomes unsettled, hopefully she will fall asleep by herself. :) good luck, sleep schools are good I hear definately go if you and her are in tears, let me know what you do, :)!

Hi ladies! I havent been on here in so long, life is busy with 3 under 4! Emily just had her 6 month check up...19.5 lbs and 28 inches! BIG girl ! Shes come a long was since being born pre term. This is my favorite baby age i think :) SHe is so cute grabbing at things and flirting...Shes even started to say "mama"!. Both of my older girls were walking at 9 months, but I dont think emily will be like them. With 2 big dogs, a 2 year old, and a 4 year old running around, Em doesnt get as much floor time as she should! but im good with that lol I hope all of you are doing well, cant wait to read and catch up!

Good afternoon my baby girl just turned 5 months and she still have no tears is this normal?

Ali*L - Tuesday, 3 Jan
Hey girls! I'm still checking in on you all the time! Nothing much new going on for us....Ruby is getting better at sitting on her own. She isn't really babbling much yet but she is getting really good with her hands! She is so grabby! If you are trying to eat or drink anything, you have to be very careful when you are holding her! She will stuff anything she can into her mouth! haha! When she does tummy-time she is lifting her front off the ground by straightening her arms...only a matter of time before she figures out her legs! She is not quite 6 months...not til the 6th. We are doing rice or oatmeal cereal about every other day with a fruit or veg. I'll start giving it to her once a day when she hits 6mons...I think, we'll see. Ruby is a little peanut...about 14lbs, 26 in long, wearing mostly 3-6 mon clothes, some 0-3 onesies still, and 6-9 in one piece outfits or footed sleepers. How big are your babies?

wowwee - Monday, 2 Jan
My lil one is just 6 month and doesn't roll. He still unaided but doesn't try to crawl or anything. He started saying da da but to anything. Should I worry about him not trying to be mobile?

anxious1sttimemommy - Monday, 2 Jan
Shabs- What's sleep school?

anxious1sttimemommy - Monday, 2 Jan
Hi ladies, I am rarely on anymore since I have had Haidyn in June, but I check on here every once in awhile! At Haidyn's 6 month appointment she was 19lb 8oz and 28.5 in long! She is the size of a 9 month old the doctor told me! LOL, growing WAY too fast! She has had 2 teeth since about 4.5 months, is sitting unassisted, sometimes she pulls herself a bit with her arms and tries to get on her knees. She is clapping as of last week, and loves to dance! (we have dance parties, just her and I! :) And I THINK she waves goodbye. She doesn't sleep the greatest either, I have tried cutting her down to 1 bottle at night instead of 2 and when she fusses giving her a paci right away before she wakes up too much and she has been going to sleep pretty easily, but I have to get up to do that 2-3x a night, plus her 1 bottle feeding. At least when I am just giving her a paci I'm back in bed in 1-2 minutes, so not TOO bad, but I would like to cut those times out! Suggestions?

shabs78 - Monday, 2 Jan

Luvbaby, Em does the same thing...it's totally normal!

mugs - Thursday, 29 Dec
Em says mama as well...I wasn't sure she was putting it with me but more just making sounds but more and more I am thinking she is saying it purposefully! She sits unassisted and plays peek a boo with a blankie. No waving or clapping but she thinks it's hilarious when she sees us do it to her! Just eating up every second because she is our last....

luvbaby - Thursday, 29 Dec
HELP! My Ella will be 6 months in 11 days, im breastfeeding her is it normal that she looks and plays with my nipple

noname - Wednesday, 28 Dec
Thanks to all you ladies who commented on the eczema. I took my lil guy to the doc again because it was so bad and it turns out his eczema is infected. It is a bacterial infection, otherwise known as impetigo. He was put on an oral antibiotic 2x daily and an antibotic oinment 4x daily. I really hope it helps. My baby boy is no longer sleeping thru the night because it is bothering him so much. There is about a 3' ring around his neck that is infected and his cheeks that are also infected:( Sanner - where do I find the all natural products? Brisbane - I'm not sure that it is a dairy allergy as we've been using the same formula since birth and the eczema didn't start until about 3 months? But who knows? 2babywax - I'll have to give the wash and cream you suggested a try. I've tried TONS of different products but not the one you mentioned. We are currently using Cetaphil cream and wash and also using hydrocrotizone cream 1-2x daily.

amanda220 - Saturday, 24 Dec
Yeah, ava's on the small side. =] which no one expected since my husband is massive! Lol and all his family, too! They all have big babies and end up tall adults. My husband's sister just had a baby boy and he was almost 11 lbs at birth and he's one month old now and weighs 13! He'll pass his cousin in no time! Well I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas! We are enjoying our day and can't wait to celebrate more tomorrow! My baby girl is amazing me! I taught her how to say 'mama' and she got it! She's been saying mmmma all day when she sees me and she's mastered waving bye-bye and sitting unassisted. This is awesome but sad... Shes growing up too fast. How are everyone else's lo's doing?

mugs - Saturday, 24 Dec
Oh! Amanda220...what a peanut you have! My other two were much smaller than Em...she's so tall for our family! Glad all our little ones are healthy and growing! Merry Christmas to all those that celebrate it and blessings in the new year to everyone!

2babywax - Friday, 23 Dec
I heard about the baby in MO too... very sad. I'm nursing, but I'm also working full time and don't always pump enough so we have to supplement with formula on occasion. Thank God I don't use that kind! :(

2babywax - Friday, 23 Dec
Love it!!! Elijah was 18 lbs 1 oz and 27 inches at his 6 month check up!
