Your baby, 7 months

32 and older

7 months old Your baby is becoming more interested in playing and can entertain himself for a little while on the floor. Encourage him to play by giving him stimulating and interesting toys. Your baby may enjoy an exersaucer or jumper, and this will help him develop muscles that are needed for walking. Many babies take off crawling at this age! When he begins to rock back and forth on his hands and knees, crawling is soon to come! If he is not yet up on his hands and knees, encourage him by placing favorite toys in front of him. Praise his accomplishments and if he begins to get frustrated, stop.

Organzing baby's toys can be a challenge. You need to find somewhere to safely store her toys so that they are easily accesible, but also easy to clean up. Low shelves can be great- make sure they are secured to the wall. A plastic laundry basket makes an ideal place for toys. Your baby can easily see what is inside and it moves from place to place easily. Make her play area interesting and encourage her to play with different toys to maximize learning. Babies at this age like toys that fit inside of each other- get her some nesting cups or a bowl with objects that can go inside.

Finger foods are good for babies that show an interest in feeding themselves. You can get special finger foods made just for babies or use cheerios as well. Bread, cheese and cooked veggies are all good choices. Put a couple on the highchair at a time. This will also help your baby develop fine motor skills. Let your baby help feed himself with less messy foods. At first, it can be messy. But, this is one of the many ways you can teach your baby to be independent. She probably has some teeth and sometimes snacking can help soothe the pain. It is also time to add some types of protein to her diet. You can add strained or pureed meats and poultry, but wait on eggs until atleast a year old.

New sounds will continue to come from your baby's mouth. She is learning different sounds and can say alot more. Listen to her and repeat her `words`. Point to objects and tell her what they are. Use a persons name when she sees them. Babies like to hear different sounds and will probably bang their toys together. Allow her to play with toys that make sounds.

Your baby likes to be included in what you do. He likes to be with other people and see pictures of other babies. Let him look at himself in the mirror often. Your baby can tell if someone is happy or upset by the way they look and talk. If you are upset, chances are your baby will notice.

You may begin to hear what sounds like real words. Your baby has learned alot about language and can say ma, mi, da, di, ba and bi. Put that together, and you may have just hear `mommy` or `daddy`. Make a game out of blowing air and clicking your tongue. These will help her with learning to talk. Teach your baby where her body parts are. You can show your baby different colors and tell him what they are.

Your baby's eyes are developing rapidly. When she was born, she could not see very far or differentiate colors. That is all changing now. Take her for walks and let her see as much as possible. Introduce her to different patterns, shapes, textures and colors. Play games with her that encourage her to use both eyes at the same time.

Because you are the most important thing to your baby, she will try to keep track of you. Separation anxiety is still an issue, but showing her that you will return will help. Calming your baby's distress will help her become less clingy. She will develop a sense of trust and security. As your baby grows and learns that you will always return for him, he will be able to tolerate longer perids of separation because of the trust he developed.

horseygal - Friday, 20 Nov
We bought the Britax, love it. My car has a recommendation of rear facing until age three. It's a saab.

luckypenny - Friday, 20 Nov
I just went out and bought the Alpha Omega Elite by Safety First...it has the best ratings other than the hella expensive Britax. Its from 5-100lbs.

Beluga - Friday, 20 Nov
LOL, all the talk about car seats... As far as I know if a a child has exceeded by weight and by height the specifications of using a specific car seat, then the rule does not apply and needs to move forward the next specification... Those rules vary from state to state and countries... And once one turn 16, some states in USA even lift the ruling.. however one must check with the insurance companies -life one and car one- in case of accidents.. Way too complicated! :-D

karenajoy - Friday, 20 Nov
Mama 2 a Rockstar - I agree that the car seat rules/regulations are over the top these days. A child that is 4' 9' still needs to be a booster seat?! That's insane! I was probably 4'9' in junior high! I will NOT put my junior high children in a booster seat someday! I definitely want my children to be safe, but let's get realistic. I have a SIL who is barely over 5 feet and by today's standards, she almost needs a booster seat too! Ridiculous.

amber-d - Friday, 20 Nov
Babylug- I had a few moles removed a few years ago and I to was scared...I had one of them removed, sent away and it came back cancerous, so i had to go to a plastic surgeoun (this is on my shoulder) and have them cut deeper and a wider area surrounding it...it was not fun and was truly unnerving but they got it all and although I do have a bad scar I'd rather have it than cancer. I have moles all over me so i am always nervous and watching them...I need to go back soon and have them checked out again. You will be fine...better safe than sorry! All the others I had removed were not cancerous. Try not to worry too much. Atleast you are taking precautions. That is smart. Also, if you ever doubt what a doctor says get a second opinion. The first doc said he thought it looked fine and when I went to my GYNO, he actually said it looked like a red flag, took it off immediately and referred me on and I am so thankful he did!

carterscutie85 - Friday, 20 Nov
babylug-don't worry. I had moles removed while I was pregnant and a couple were large and irregular shaped. It doesn't always spell cancer, sometimes they just grow like that, try not to worry, if it wasnt hurting u are most likely fine. My moles I had removed were large, irregular shaped, and hurt from time to time but they were not cancerous. *hugs*

landa0901 - Friday, 20 Nov
babylug- Don't worry......just let them test it....I know this is hard...I had four removed before I got pregnantm one of them I was scared of, it was black and on my lower stomach.....of course the plastic surgeon said after that it could have turned into cancer. Then this year a few months ago, I had three more on my stomach removed. Just be patient and I am praying you don't have anything to worry about. Now I don't go in the sun because of my history. If I go out, I wear Sunscreen. This was one of the many things that changed about me this year......my moms family worships the sun.

Mama 2 a Rockstar - Thursday, 19 Nov
my boyfriends step-mom is 44, and she's 4'1.5' (we HAVE to give her credit for that 1/2 inch!! LOL) and her and her husband got pulled over the other day and the police officer was seriously trying to enforce her riding in a booster seat. SERIOUSLY?!?!?! at 44???? i just think some of these laws are ridiculous. different strokes for different folks. my sister is 4 and only 19lbs (she's a special needs baby!! thats why she so small!) so should my mom put her in a rear facing seat?!?! i just think some of these things are bogus. just needed to vent, cuz i had someone literally freak out on me about my sons car seat clip and his position in my pickup.

Mama 2 a Rockstar - Thursday, 19 Nov
i find this carseat stuff overwhelming. the whole '13 yrs old and in the back seat' is odd to me. for instance, i have a brother that just turned 13. and i've said before my mom and i make BIG BOYS!! but i have 6 brothers ranging in age from 21-7. and my 13 yr old brother is 6' and 220lbs. so i can't imagine telling him he HAD to sit in the back seat. and i have a 8 year old brother whom is 5'9 and 140lbs. i cant imagine having him in the back seat, he's bigger than i am. so when does it come to abiding by the rules to doing what's logical?????

babylug - Thursday, 19 Nov
Ladies, am totally terrified. Not baby related but scary none the less. Was looking for advice and comfort. Went in for my yearly pap smear and mentioned a mole thats farely big that had changed shape and color. Got a referal to a dermatologist and have to have a biopsy and Im totally terrified it melinoma cancer. Been crying all day. Anyone experience this? Any advice? Words of comfort?

ash070658 - Thursday, 19 Nov
my gosh my LO is soo freakin close to crawlin im goin crazy i want him to do it soo ahh im so excited!!

newmommad - Thursday, 19 Nov
we've been using the convertible car seat for about one month now. My LO doesn't act any different...I just miss being able to hang things from the handle bar and using the viser to keep the sun out of his eyes. We have the blinds that fit onto the window, but they don't work very well.

purplefrog - Thursday, 19 Nov
We just switched from Ella's carrier to a convertible, she loves it. I do miss being able to take out the seat when she was asleep, and just plop it in her stroller, but once she was awake I had to take her out of the carrier anyway as she really didn't like being in it

purplefrog - Thursday, 19 Nov
One baby - My nephew had this problem. I gave him glycerin and it worked in probably about 5 minutes. You can get it in any drug store.God luck! Poor baby

lisa187 - Thursday, 19 Nov
I liked the carrier car seat too for the convenience, but my son hated being in it since about 2 months old, so I always left it in the car anyway and he hated being in it in the stroller also. So now he exceeds the 22 lb weight limit so I am using the rear facing convertible car seat. He has been in it for about a week. The only thing he doesn't like as much is the large side impact sides because he cannot see out the window as well. Also, I cannot hang any toys from it like I did on the handlebar of the carrier. So I kinda wish he could still fit in his carrier.

my-beautiful-destiny - Thursday, 19 Nov
Anytime Destiny gets costipated I use a rectal thermometer. I have to stand there for a few minutes and then it comes... She usually has at least 1 poo per day. As far as carseat... we got rid of the carrier when she was about 4 months old. Her feet used to hang over the end so we upgraded to the convertable carseat. I miss the carrier bc it was a lot easier than having to get her in and out of the carseat each time we stop somewhere, but I think she likes it better not being strapped in all the time.

Wmelon77 - Thursday, 19 Nov
My convertible carseat is rear facing and starts @ 5lbs. I bought it while I was pregnant, but ended up buying a carrier also because it came as a set (carrier, base, and stroller). I didn't think I would like it as much as I do. It's so heavy, but it is convenient how it fits in the stroller. Awwww.... our babies are getting so big!!!

Beluga - Thursday, 19 Nov
By the way, as far as I know all infants should always ride rear-facing until they are at least 1 year of age AND weigh at least 20 pounds.... Two types of seat can be used: infant seats (carriers) and rear-facing convertible seats... Later on for toddlers convertible seats are used and it is best to ride rear-facing as long as possible. Children 1 year of age AND at least 20 pounds can ride forward-facing... Booster seats are for older children who have outgrown their forward-facing car safety seats. Children should stay in a booster seat until adult belts fit correctly (usually when a child reaches about 4' 9' in height and is between 8 and 12 years of age)... Children who have outgrown their booster seats should ride in a lap and shoulder belt in the back seat until 13 years of age... You can find more information at the American Academy of Pediatrics (http://www.aap.org/family/Carseatguide.htm)

Beluga - Thursday, 19 Nov
Wmelon77... I will keep using the infant only carrier (Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30) until January or so... I love it since I can attach it directly to the frame of the stroller (Pliko Switch from Peg Perego)... I am changing it because I will use the infant only carrier for my new little girl (who will be born sometime at the end of Jan or February)... This weekend we will buy a new convertible seat (Britax new model) for my little Sarah, which she will use until she will outgrow it... I am planning to buy a double stroller (Peg Perego Duette SW) so I will attached the infant carrier (Peg Perego) to the back chassis and use the front seat for my little Sarah...

Wmelon77 - Wednesday, 18 Nov
What type of carseat is everybody using? Not brand, just type.... I have been using a carrier, but I want to switch Koi to his bigger transitional carseat. He's so long, but he's still skinny enough. The carrier is just so convenient sometimes. What to do??????

aprilmama - Wednesday, 18 Nov
my son has one top tooth in and he likes grinding his teeth. He hasnt bitten me yet while nursing. Well he did a month or so ago, but no since he has gotten his top tooth. Knock on wood.

newmommad - Wednesday, 18 Nov
My LO can finally sit up by himself!! I no longer have to sit behind him to make sure he doesn't topple over. He has had his 2 bottom teeth since he was 4 months, and all 4 of his top teeth are growing in now.

chloesmommy - Wednesday, 18 Nov
I BF and Chloe is getting her two bottom teeth. Kinda makes me sad. lol. My little baby is growing up.

thenorthcutts - Wednesday, 18 Nov
MY SON CRAWLED FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY!!

sandy127962 - Wednesday, 18 Nov
Mama 2 a Rockstar could be teething but if he is refusing a bottle if you bottle feed then it could be an ear infection as well. I would definitly call just to be safe. Tugging on ear is also teething related so either way.
