Single umbilical artery affects approximately 1 out of 100 live births and is the most common defect of the umbilical cord. A typical umbilical cord has two arteries and one vein.
When one artery stops growing or when the primoridial umbilical artery does split, simgle umbilical artery can occur. One artery is capable of supporting a pregnancy to term, so the disorder does not pose a threat directly to your developing baby. However, there are other birth defects that your child may be more likely to inherit because of the single umbilical artery.
Approximately 25% of babies that have single umbilical artery will have other abnormalities. These can include heart defects, gastrointestinal abnormalities, central nervous system complications, urinary tract complications and trisomy 13 or 18.
Healthcare providers can diagnose the condition after an ultrasound examination shows one artery that is large with only two vessels visible.

wow, okay, i havent been on this forum in about a year, since i had my little baby, but i wanted to pop back on and let you all know that my little SUA baby turned 1 on October 13th. She was born a year ago, at 39w 1d (so NOT early), she weighed 8lbs 13oz (so NOT small) and she had no further complications. She is amazingly smart and beautiful. Shes talking and walking already. So dont let SUA bring you down, everything can (and usually does) turn out JUST FINE. Keep up the good work baking those babys mama`s and if any of you ever need some support from someone who knows a LOT about SUA and has been through a LOT because of the SUA then feel free to send me a message :)

Greetings, first and foremost thank you to all the wonderful moms that are writing about their success stories, the information you can gather about SUA can be disheartening...this site has been my main source of information these past few weeks. This is my second pregnancy and I'm due tomorrow, needless to say there has been some anxiety with this pregancy but all ultrasounds and general monitoring have been normal. My doctor is confident that baby is doing well and according to ultrasound is currently 8 pounds 6 oz, certainly defying the odds of SUA. I'll keep you posted, looking forward to meeting my babe and optimistic that I too will have a completely positive outcome to report next week!

Hello ladies! I'm so glad my guardian angels sent me to you all today. I havn't got much to write as yet as I am yet to speak to a dr on Thursday. I to had my 20 wk scan got a big fright, came home read up and cried all afternoon. I too have SUI and a little hole in bubs heart. I went through SVU and heart defect with no 3 baby and that was stressful itself. He was born perfect! I am just relieved to read all your comments and I too will do the same for other mums in our boat. Goodluck to you all! Bel

Well, my lil boy was born with his two vessel cord and all at 10 lb 8.9 oz and health as can be. I'm so proud of him. He is a cutie. I just want to say thanks for everyones support. I would not have made it without this site. I was so scared to even know if he had any issues but he didn't and it didn't matter if he did. Just know that if your child has a two vessel cord he or she will be ok.

Hello ladies- This is my update to you all. My daughter was born totally fine, 5 days LATE and over 9 pounds. I did the NSTs twice a week for the last month, and nothing was ever abnormal. Have faith...if there are no other abnormalaties, SUA can be a variation of normal. Another healthy baby of SUA reported here...good luck!

Hi all, I was in the same boat as you last year and with no information I also researched the internet and freaked out but my pregnancy went well and I gave birth to a healthy 8lb 1oz baby boy, he's now 7 months old and is in perfect health weighing 16lbs 12oz's, once we had our last scan at 36 weeks the words SUA were never mention again and we had no follow ups once Ryan was born not that we needed any, please try not to worry if they didn't spot any other issues on your 20 week scan your baby will probably be fine. Good luck and enjoy your pregnancies xxx

Just wanted to post another success story... I was diagnosed with SUA and CPC's. Same story as most of the posts... docs told me everything looked good but I googled and googled and found all kinds of scary stuff. My son was born completely healthy. I too wish I just could have enjoyed my pregnancy, but this is definitely easier said than done. Hang in there ladies, it is all worth it in the end.

Good morning moms. I just wanted to report, I went to the doctor yesterday and received good report. Baby weighes 1.5 pounds and her spine still shows no signs of spina bifiida. Doctors did do 2nd confirmation on SUA but said that she seems to be gaining weight good. I'm in week 23 so 1.5 pounds looks about normal from what I have read. Thank you all for the encouraging comments and prayers. We still have a long way to go (115 days) but I feel a little better about everything. Hope everyone has a great day.

marcieb - i was in your shoes about 4 weeks ago - during my routine ultrasound the tech noticied i have 1A1V - while she said there were no apparent issues present, I did like most people and searched the internet and FREAKED OUT!! This forum has been great for me as well to hear all the positive stories - I have since had 2 more ultrasounds and my baby girl is growing right on schedule. We are healthy at 26 weeks and have no problems present with heart, kidneys, growth or anything - just have faith in God and trust in your doctors that they will take care of you and will let you know if anything looks out of the ordinary - I had to learn to trust my doctors and if they weren't worried, I shouldn't be.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the positive comments posted here. I am 22 weeks with my first child. I was told last week during a screening and u/s with a specialist (for spina bifida) that her spine looked okay but he said she had a SUA but no other noticable problems. Of course I had no idea what this meant. I looked it up on the net later and just scared myself more. It was so great to see some positve stories about children with the same thing as mine. Good luck and once again, Thank you to all.

Hello Ladies-
Once again, I only have great news to share. The week 32 US went great. Baby is over 4.5 lbs and measuring AHEAD of schedule. Kidneys, heart and liver are all perfect. SUA or no SUA, I am confident this baby is just fine. I don't need any more ultrasounds, but I do start my non-stress tests in two weeks. I will keep you posted up until baby is HERE!

Hi Moms!!!
First of all, congrats to you all!!
I was in your shoes last summer, when I found out our baby had SUA. Just like most of you, I freaked out; cried, worried, read the internet and did not enjoy my pregnancy. DON'T DO THIS LADIES!!!! Being pregnant should be a wonderful time and unfortunately I let this minor setback take the fun out of it. I regret this so much. Luckily this was my 3rd pregnancy, so I had experienced it before and have a feeling I will again soon.
I also had a lot of extra ultra sounds, an echocariogram on the baby's heart at 24 weeks and then more ultra sounds. They never found anything on any scans or growth checks. The last few weeks I had NST every week and even these were normal. Baby was born 11 days early, and no issue worth mentioning.
After all you can think about for 5 months is the unknown, and then the baby is born healthy and you probably won't hear your doctor mention the words SUA again.
We did have a ultrasound done on his kidneys when he was 9 days old, and all was perfect.
I know you will still worry (as we did), but just place this in God's hands and let Him handle it. You can not control anything.
I agree with someone elses post on here, that they need to give more explaination on the sites that you find about SUA. I think that the percentages are confusing. I am retty sure that when they give a percent of babies that are born with defects or major problems it is NOT SUA that causes these defects; it is just kind of a side effect. Meaning if you get the baby checked out on U/S and they do not find anything; it is highly unlikely you will find something major when he/she is born. I am no doctor, but have been through this one.
I hope I have lifted your spirits a bit. I know it is unsettling.
Hang in there. In a few months you will be writting a post to other mom's that have just gotten the SUA news and trying to cheer them up :-)
Happy baby growing!!!

My Katie was also diagnosed with SUA early on in my pregnancy. I was really concerned with it so I had an amnio. It turned out she has a minor chromosome deletion called 18P. Needless to say it caused me a great deal of worry. I just wanted to let all you ladies know that just because your baby is diagnosed with something, it doesn't mean he/she won't be just fine. Katie came 2 months early, not related to her conditions. I had pneumonia and pleurisy twice and because I was so sick, my water broke early and I deveoped an infection. Regardless, she weighed in at a hefty 4 lbs. 1 oz. which is great for a 32 weeker. She spent 20 days in the NICU and was released to us a 4 days before my 40th birthday. She is perfect and beautiful and has no major health conditions. She eats like a champ and has doubled her birth weight in 2 months. There are pictures on my profile if you'd like to take a look. I'm so proud of her. Just have faith and don't read too much on the internet, it can scare the hell out of you sometimes. Trust your doctors and your own instincts. Everything I read told me babies with SUA can be born small and with all kinds of problems. From talking with other mothers who've had babies with this condition, that is not the norm. Just wanted to share a story with a great outcome. Good luck to all of you and to your little babies. They bring such incredible joy.

Hello, i have had my last growth scan today, im 35 + 5 weeks pregnant. all's well with the baby, shes weighing approximatley 6 lbs 10 oz, which im happy about as i still have 30 days to go. nothing was spotted due to the SUA condition which is even better . they said she was above the average growth rate, so the SUA hasnt affected her size. so i just have the big count down now, im so excited and cant wait to meet her. just thought i would let you all know xxx
