1A1V (Single Umbilical Artery)

Single umbilical artery affects approximately 1 out of 100 live births and is the most common defect of the umbilical cord. A typical umbilical cord has two arteries and one vein.

Single Umbilical ArteryWhen one artery stops growing or when the primoridial umbilical artery does split, simgle umbilical artery can occur. One artery is capable of supporting a pregnancy to term, so the disorder does not pose a threat directly to your developing baby. However, there are other birth defects that your child may be more likely to inherit because of the single umbilical artery.

Approximately 25% of babies that have single umbilical artery will have other abnormalities. These can include heart defects, gastrointestinal abnormalities, central nervous system complications, urinary tract complications and trisomy 13 or 18.

Healthcare providers can diagnose the condition after an ultrasound examination shows one artery that is large with only two vessels visible.

Hi ladies my due date is tomorrow, but bubba is showing no signs of arriving anytime soon, midwife is guessing he'll be around 7 and a half pounds but I'm so scared he'll be bigger than that. I'll keep you posted. All those with sua babies don't panic about what you read on the internet its only a rare few that complications will happen to and that will more than likely get picked up on your abnormalitiy scan at 20 weeks. Good luck and I'll keep you posted. xx

Hi Ladies I was diagnosed with SUA at my 20 week ultrasound. I was not told about it until I went for a check-up at 24 weeks....and at the end of the appt...I asked if everything was OK....my obgyn said everything looked great and then told me about SUA...she said not to worry because my blood tests where fine and the ultrasound showed no abnormalities...I left her office in a great frame of mind...until I googled it....I cried for a few days....When I went back to see her..she told me not to read the internet....the web gives worst case senerios.....I am having another unltrasound tomorrow morning...I'm currently 32 weeks.....I'm really nervous and I'm praying my little girl is growing normally and they won't find any other problems...will keep you updated...wish me luck.

Hi Ladies, I am very confused and need some advice. I had an US done when I was 28 1/2 weeks and was told that my little girl was diagnosed with SUA. The US tech said that she weighed small and because of that, they extended my due date 2 1/2 weeks later then origanily scheduled. Now I no for SURE that the first day of my last peroid was April 24th-30th, which would put my due date at Jan 29th. now it's moved to Feb 17th. I just don't understand. could I have ovulated 28 days after my peroid? I don't see how thats possible! I'm guessing that my baby is a little smaller due to the SUA, but I don't see how that changes my due date back THAT far. Has anyone else had a healthy baby or know anyone who has had a healthy baby that was 2 1/2 weeks behind in size, or was told that their due date was extended because of the size? Any advice would be great. I've already scared the crap out of my self by trying to find out more info on the internet. Everything i find makes me worry and stress even more. Please Help!

I was pregnant with twins, and I delivered two beautiful baby boys last July. One of my sons was diagnosed with a SUA at our 14wk scan. We held on to the hope that he would be alright, that he would not have any of the abnormalities that were possible with a SUA. I declined amnio and put my trust in God that he had a plan for us. Sadly, my sweet baby was born not breathing, and the doctors were able to ventilate him. It was then that we discovered he had Trisomy 13. I will never understand why this had to happen to my sweet baby, but God knew that his little soul would need a family here on earth that would surround him with love, and that is just we did. He lived for 3 weeks, and I am grateful for the time that God gave us together. It is so nice to see that there are other Moms on here who have had a good outcome with a SUA. I am so relieved for you and for your babies. My child was a beautiful baby, he will be missed by our family, his twin, and I only wish that his little body had been strong enough to keep his beautiful spirit with us a little longer. He was amazing, a gift from above, and he was my precious child.

HI all. Last week at my 22 week scan my dr diagnosed SUA. Today I went in to see a specialist obstetrician who scanned the baby from top to toe, and pronounced all anatomy perfect. Was feeling quite stressed - literally felt the weight off my shoulders after appointment. So nice to see so many positive people here, thanks for all the advice and stories.

thx kelsee and good luck to you! i havent heard anything back from the ultrasound yet so im going with no news is good news; we werent expecting to find anything anyways, however i think i will confirm that next week anyways. also taking the baby for another hearing test, just another follow up the doctor ordered, we know she can hear, shes already passed the tests in the hospital just want to be really sure with the 2 vessel cord i guess.

Hi ladies just checking in and congrat's to Courtenay, hope all went well with the us on Halloween. One month left and it's looking like a c-section for me. Baby is two weeks behind in growth, but still within the normal range. He is a footling breech and does not look like he is going to turn down. We are hoping to get a 5 1/2 lb baby. Last us he was weighing in just under 4 lbs. Go to the dr. on the 14th to check things. Thinking of you all

courtenay - 389 days ago.
hi ladies, hope your all doing well and still baking those babies! I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I am taking my baby for her renal ultrasound on halloween but we dont expect to find anything! It is just a standard follow up the doctor likes to do on 2 vessel cord babies.

Hi all, just to let you know we've had our last scan and consultant appt today and bubba is right on track growthwise and there appears to be no more issues with him (i.e kidneys etc). He was 5lb 7oz's and is expected to weigh 7lbs at term, only 4 and a bit more weeks until I get to meet him. Hope everyone is doing well. xx

Hi Courtnenay, I am soooo happy for you !! Thanks for letting us know all is well ! Congratulations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

courtenay - 401 days ago.
hey everyone i just have a moment but I wanted to come and let you all know that I had my baby by emergency c-section on monday night, oct. 13th. it was originally scheduled for the 17th but they took us early because my BP has been up and her heart was a bit fast for the last few NST's. We are home now, both doing well, the section was NO WHERE near as bad as I thought it was going to be. I am feeling great, baby is doing great. One of the risks of SUA is a smaller baby, well NOT THIS ONE. She tipped the scales at a whopping 8lbs 13oz, she is eating well and my milk has finally come in. She sleeps good too. And like I said, everything is healthy, now that she is born they are going to do one more check on her kidneys by ultrasound on monday or tuesday but shes doing great! good luck to all of you!

courtenay - 412 days ago.
thank you everyone, i will be sure to let you know how it goes. good luck to all of you!

pr3gojenn - 412 days ago.
hey all. Just got back from the doctors at my 26 week specialist scan appointment done monthly. The little girl in my belly is now 1lb13oz in weight and is in the 40th Percentile for her size. so things are looking good. I am getting so excited for her arrival

dore - 412 days ago.
Hi Courtney , I am thinking of you and your baby !!!! And sending lots of love :0)

pintpot - 412 days ago.
Hi all just got back from our 32 week growth scan, and OMG bubba is 2138 grams (4lb 7oz) already that means if they grow half a pound a week I'm looking at a 7 and a half to 9 and a half pounder, slighty scared at the thought of labour now. I'm thinking what would he of weighed without the SUA. To all you ladies with babys just getting diagnosed with this, I've yet to hear a negative outcome with a baby with SUA so try not to worry to much. Next scan at 36 weeks and we get to see the consulant then hopefully that will be it for hosp visits until labour day. xx

courtenay - 413 days ago.
i just wanted to let everyone know my c-section has been scheduled due to her size (at 36 weeks she was est at 7.5lbs already and measured BIG for once, she has always measured within 3 days of the original dd) i still have nothing really going on, no signs of labour or anything although i do hope it starts by itself. i think i am the next one to go on this board, hopefully any day now. ill let you all know how it goes but there is no reason to think she is going to be anything other than perfect :)

kelseewhite - 413 days ago.
Well not much longer now is seems. Due around Dec. 8th and baby was weighing in small at last us. Have another scheduled for Oct. 22/08 and go the dr. this Wednesday for routine 3 week appt. Feeling good and trying not to stress.

courtenay - 423 days ago.
my doctor said the same thing, about never seeing an sua baby born with any problems. i dont think she has been doing it for 15 years but its still promising! all is still well over here after my last US on monday except she was breech again :( so i have a consult tomorrow to discuss the possibility of a section although she could still turn so i am holding onto that hope!

dore - 423 days ago.
I just got back from the extra ultra sound to check Eliana's heart and her heart is PERFECT ! So happy ! Doc also said that in his 15 years of delivering baby's he never had a sua -baby born not healthy. Think this will give all of you some peace of mind and heart !

courtenay - 426 days ago.
hi ladies, i just wanted to let you know i have my final ultrasound today, i am just over 36 weeks and they are checking her position to make sure she is ready for labour, and giving her one last check over to make sure she is good to go (no reason to think she isnt). NST's have been going good and have my first internal check tomorrow. I will let you all know how the us goes and how the doctors goes!

pintpot - 432 days ago.
Hi all, just to let you know I had my scan at 28w5d and everything was fine he was spot on for his dates which I'm glad about as he was a week behind at 20 weeks. We've got another scan at 32 weeks to make sure everything is still on track. The scan lady said she's not had a baby with SUA who hasn't grown and is close to if not spot on for there dates as long as everything is plumbed in correctly. So try not to worry to much if your in the early days, I know how your feeling and I was messaged by the ladies on this site with lots of postive stories and healthy births. He's so active these days which makes me not worry so much about him, only 10 weeks left until I get to meet him. Good luck to all you ladies. xx

pr3gojenn - 432 days ago.
My baby has it too, however she is doing just fine, she is a little small but they say its normal so everything looks good!

dore - 443 days ago.
So glad to hear so much good news regarding sua ! My baby and I have sua, too. I heard already from 3 women in my area they had the same and they and their baby's are doing fine !!! Don't be too afraid !! Courtenay ; I am thinking of you ! Sept 25 I will have an ultra sound by a specialist to check baby's heart.

courtenay - 445 days ago.
hi ladies, i just wanted to let you all know that i had my first NST today at 33.5 weeks due to SUA we are starting early, but while i was on the labour and delivery floor doing this the nurse was telling me that another lady just delivered her baby with SUA earlier that day. both mom and baby are doing great, no problems and she was able to have a sucessful vaginal delivery which is what i personally am hoping for. good luck to everyone.
