Approximately 1-2% of all women that have an ultrasound between 16 and 24 weeks will be diagnosed with fetal choroid plexus cysts.
The choroid plexus is a tissue in the brain that produces cerebrospial fluid. During a second trimester ultrasound, doctors will often find a cyst(s) in the choroid plexus. Usually these cysts will go away by the 28th week of pregnancy and will not affect the baby.
A CPC tells doctors that there could be another chromosomal abnormality present. The presence of CPC's indicates an increased risk for trisomy 18. Women that are diagnosed with this condition will be offered additional ultrasound examinations and an amniocentesis.

I am 25.5 weeks pregnant. I too was told that my little boy had a CPC on his brain, during my 20 week Level II ultrasound. Like most first time parents, my DH and I were very concerned. After speaking with my OB, we were relieved to find out that CPC 's are common and ususally don't predict any defects. We are still praying every day that our son will be healthy. To ease our concerns my OB said if I want to schedule a 30 week sono, he will request it. I WILL take him up on his offer (SMILE)

My baby was born last week and is a perfectly healthy baby, despite the cpcs found at 19 weeks. For those waiting on their babies, try not to worry about it too much. I wish I had spent less time worrying and more time enjoying pregnancy!

Hi all. This is my first poast on CPCs. I had my 20 week ultrasound and the doc said they found a small cyst. He said not to worry. In fact, just a generation ago, the machines wouldn't have even picked it up and I would have gotten a clean bill of health. He said the rest of the development was good and that he doesn;t even like to counsel patients on this because it is USUALLY not a problem and they go away on their own. He said to do an amnio at this point would be too risky, but he is monitoring it with another ultrasound at my next appointment (we are hoping it is gone by then). Please contact me and let me kow your stories since you all are in teh same boat and the what ifs are dtiving me crazy. And I will keep everyone posted on my baby as well.

I was told last week after my ultrasound that they found CPCs on my baby's brain....I was 17 weeks 1 day when the ultrasound was done.....my triple screen results came back and everything was fine...my doctor is sending me for a leve II ultrasound next week and I am really scared!! I am glad others have gone through the same as me and their babies seem to be doing good

i spent the second half of my pregnancy worried sick over the finding of two cysts much to my doctors disappointment as he told me everything would be fine and not even to worry about a second ultrasound. 2 weeks ago i gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby boy.

I had to write an update in case someone else ends up in my previous boat. When I got to the level II ultrasound the doctor said, 'Why are you here'. He said so what there are two cyst, your blood results are 1 in 3,000 for DS and 1 in 2,700 for T13. He also said the blood work for head and spine abnormalities were negative. He did the scan anyway and said in saw NO cyst! I don't get it since there was 2 only four days prior! Anyways EVERYTHING checked out just fine! NO worries!

I'm not sure it is a CPC...but the dr said I have two cyst on the brain of our little girl. I am 23 weeks along. All my blood work came back fine. The heart, bladder, kidneys look good. I have a level 2 ultrasound scheduled in four days. One cyst is 3 and the other is 6mm in the left vectricle. Of course I read about Trisomy 13 and it said baby prefer to have their legs crossed and mine does right now.....could it just be a coincidence? How serious is this....I'm a complete mess.

Hey Guys. Im new here. I recently just hit my 20 week mark, I had my anoatomy u/s at 18w4d and they told me the baby looked great, good growth, no abnormalities, but the baby had one CPC (soft marker for tri 18) and a small calcium deposit on the heart (soft marker for downs) but nt scan and bloodwork came back with the the lowest results you can get from the lab and the neck measurement was very small. The dr said he wasnt too concerned and neither was my prenatal nurse, she said all the babies she has seen with one or both of those things ended up being normal, but I still worry. The dr is bringing me back in a few weeks to see if it dissapears as most do, btw this issue is not considered a 'birth defect' in most cases its very normal. I would love to talk to someone else going through the same thing, email@example.com please email if you would like and good luck to all of you! :O)

19 weeks yesterday. My 18 week u/s showed 1 CPC. No other abnormalities were seen, but I'm going to talk to my dr. at my next appt (Wed.) bout having a level II u/s just to be on the safe side. I also have complete placenta previa, so it would be nice to rule out the trisomy 18 and just concern myself with the previa! :-)

heatmacd - my older son, who's now 5, had a 2 vessel cord. He came out perfectly healthy.

I think that doctors send you for a scan for your own benefit, so that you can relax and know everything with your kid is ok. By law, doctors have to tell you if they find anything wrong with your baby, or you. My baby has proven to be ok and is what the doctors called “perfect”, and her cyst is gone now. I recommend a level 2 u/s if you are worried and need reassurance.

My ultrasound at 19 weeks showed 2 small CPC's as well. Nothing else though, but I'm making myself sick with worry. I hoping and praying for a happy outcome for all of us!

I was told at my 20 week ultrasound that my baby had a cyst on his brain. It scared the life out of me and i dont think i ate or slept for a week till i saw my doctor. He was not at all concerned and wouldn't have even have told me if it wasn't already pointed out to me. He said they are extremely common and a part of the babies development and will disappear soon. He doesn't even want me to go for another ultrasound.

My Doctor just told me that my baby also had CPC's, he didnt say how many or how big, but that he wasnt concerned. From my research I was expecting a level two ultrasound ordered, but he said it wasnt necessary as there were no other markers for genetic abnormalities. I was also informed that the baby's umbilical cord only has two vessels which made me scared, but again, he said he wasnt concerned. The really odd thing is that 2 years ago my nephew had teh exact same findings!! He's perfectly healthy so ill try not to worry!! Good luck everyone

My baby had cysts, too. All else was normal and I didn't do the amnio. Gave birth May 21, 2008 to a perfectly healthy baby boy!

My baby has a cpc that’s 6.7mm big. I have to have a level three u/s done next Friday. I'm a bit scared but am trying to keep it together. My baby has no other known abnormalities and my quads screen all said normal. I will refuse an amino if offered. If anyone else reads this and has had an like experience, let me know, even if your story has a negative outcome, I still want to know about it.
