A diaphragmatic hernia occurs when there is an opening in the diaphragm that allows the contents of the stomach, small intestine, spleen, liver, or kidney to appear in the chest cavity. Approximately 1 in 2,200 to 5,000 live births will be affected.
Because there are other organs in the chest cavity, the lungs are not able to develop properly. Symptoms of a diaphragmatic hernia include an empty feeling abdomen, bowel sounds in the chest, respiratory complications, bluish colored skin, decreased oxygen levels and a fast heart rate.
Breathing is difficult because of the underdeveloped lung and also because the lung tissue is crowded with other organs. A diaphragmatic hernia can be diagnosed during a prenatal ultrasound. The ultrasound will show organs in the chest cavity. Because of the severity of the defect, surgery is necessary to put the organs in their proper place. After the surgery, infants will require a breathing machine until the lungs have recovered. Fetal surgery can be performed if the hernia is discovered early enough.

hi there all! i am 19 now and had my son at 17! the dyafagmatic hernia wasnt picked up on scans and was only found out after an x-ray once he was born, i was so worried, was told to preoare for the worst, he had the op at two days old, convincied he wasnt goin to make it a prayed for the best, we spent s number of weeks in hospital, watchin ur new born with with a big macine breathing for him is not something u want to see, he had to be paralysed for a number of weeks and we where told when they try to take him off it might not be good. luckily for us, he pulled through even after contracting the MRSA bug. i still remember the day he came round he herd me and his daddy talking to him and he opened his beautiful eyes again for the 1st time in weeks, i was so proud it was like he was born all over again, after that he just spiraled up and up! he is 20 months now and you would never know what he had been through apart from the scar above his just below his chest going half way across. he is such a beautiful boy and i love him dearly, i know how lucky i am to have him, and i just want to give u some hope if u are going through what we when through, just keep faith in ur little fighter. god bless x

Hello all
I just thought i'd post to introduce myself. It seems very quiet in here- yet i know from meeting lots of other CDH mum's that this condtion sadly isn't rare. My son-Sam was diagnosed with CDH at our 20 weeks scan. His was thought to be very severe so we opted for inutero surgery. Sadly my lil boy was born on Christmas eve 07 and died aged 16 hours on Christmas day. If there is anyway i can support you, or answer any questions you might have- please message me
