Ventricular Septal Defect

A ventricular septal defect, or VSD, is one of the most common heart defects that presents at the time of birth, affecting approximately 1% of all babies.

During fetal development, a wall will form in the fetus’s heart to separate the left and right ventricles. If the wall (septum) fails to form or does not form completely, one or more holes will remain, and will the baby will have a ventricular septal defect.

Common symptoms of VSD include hard and rapid breathing, a fast heart rate, paleness, inability to gain weight or failure to thrive, respiratory infections and shortness of breath. Sometimes no treatment is necessary and the hole will close on its own.

If the hole is large, it should be surgically treated so that permanent damage or congestive heart failure does not occur from excessive blood pumping.

Hi, i'm 23w preggers and bubby has a very small VSD, everything else about the heart looks fine so we are thinking positive and hoping for the best :) It is so hard that we won't really know how it affects bubby till up to a month after bubby is born, but it helps knowing what you can about this defect and what you can expect. Isn't what science can do these days amazing!

My daughter was born in January 08 and she had Unbalanced AVSD. Her aorta was also small and she had one big hole and some tiny ones. She had open heart surgery when she was 4 weeks old, if not she could of died. Its a three step process to make her into a single ventricular baby, surgery at 5 months then again when she is 3. But sadly when she was 4 months old she passed away. Her autopsy said for unknown reasons, becuase her surgury was intact and her shunt was clear. Her cardiologist believed it could of been arythmia. Its a hard long road to go through...watching your child goes throuugh things most people dont have to endure their whole lives. i hope your babies are happy and healthy. Their are many success stories out there. :) i wish you all the best.

just had a scan am 25+ weeks, and it showed only two vavles of the heart chamber working , the doctor spent a very long time looking at this. I am not too sure what this means i have to go back in two weeks for another scan. she should have 4chambers in the heart fully working but there seemed to be only two .

hi i'm 21 wks and we discovered today that our little boy has a 'hole inthe heart'.......I cried sooooooo much..... it's scary!!!!!!!!!! This friday we will known how big it is ... Does anyone had any experience , advice something???????????????? Hope doesn't need surgery... Well I known my GOD can do everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

susanc, i can imagine that this is very scary for you. But be assured that VSD's are a very simple congenital heart defect and if surgery is ever required that outcomes are great. But more often then not surgery is not needed and if it is it can be done by a simple cardiac cath. All the best as you get ready to welcome your new little one into the world.

Hi, i'm 35 weeks pregnant and my daughter has a small VSD. We have been told not to worry too much because it' very little and might close on it's own after she's born, still it's very scary...

Hi, my daughter was born with VSD in January 2008 and after 3 cardiology visits they feel that the hole is so small and she's gained weight that they do not want to see her until she is 1 years old. We are very happy that although the problem is still there it's not life threatening to her.
