I agree, they are mostly hereditary. After 4 babies my mom didn`t have them and I am on my 5th pregnancy and have never gotten them either.

From everything I`ve read, I`ve gained that they`re mostly hereditary. If your mom had them, theres a good chance you will too. But a lotion with vitamin E is great for the skin!

My mom said it was because of the elasicity of your skin... some people are just stretchier!

I agree with ladyintexas.. my sister has horrible stretchmarks, yet, I just had my first baby and didnt get one. I worked out regularly during my entire pregnancy, up until the week I gave birth and my stomach was pretty much back to normal by the time I was discharged from the hospital. I lost 27lbs of the 30 I gained within 3wks after birth. So I stongly suggest exercising while pregnant.

from everything I have read.. babygaga.com has some good things about strech marks.. but itis geneic so really you need to look at your mom and see how bad they were with her.. now with that being said still need vitamin E and a hydrating lotion!

There is a subtance in your skin cells that allows them to stretch, and then relax again. Genetics determine how much of this substance that you have, and thus how elastic your skin is (how able your skin is to bounce back). Then, there are environmental factors like the lack of sufficiant fluids. Drinking lots of water and applying lotion or skin protectant to slow the loss of water through the skin, is said to decrease the apperance of stretch marks.
