There is no particular `best drug`. Each has it`s own merits. I tried a stepwise approach when I had my son. Gas then pethidene then epidural. On the other hand, I have friends that have birthed their babies at home with not even the gas!! To answer your question more effectively, there can be no doubt that an appropriately sited epidural is the only thing that will provide absolute pain relief. Discuss the pros and cons of each with your obstetrician, and ultimately, be prepared to make changes to your choice of pain relief when labour begins.
