My daughter is 5 weeks old and exclusively BF, but I was thankful to have the formula that I was given from the hospital for her first week. It was nice to be able to supplement before my milk came in and a few times afterwards. However, by the third week she would reject the bottle if it contained formula. If we bottlefed her with breastmilk, she took it just fine. Do what you think is best. A little formula here and there should not make you feel guilty. The first few weeks are hard enough with a newborn. good luck

i gave birth in a very traditional, catholic hospital, and the nurses were VERY against formula. i felt however, that my daughter needed something ore before my milk came in.i gave her very small amounts of formula in the first few days, and contrary to the nurses beliefs, i want on to breastfeed exclusively for six months, and kept on till my daughter was 14 months old. occasionally she was fed formula in the first months, because i had terribly sore nipples, but once we had the hang of it, it was plain sailing. do what you feel is right.

Id definatly say buy some just in case....im so glad i did. Im a breastfeeding mother but one night my breasts were so sore and bleeding that i couldnt take the pain of feeding my son. Lukily i had baught a few cartons of pre-made milk and used one in a bottle. This was 3 in the morning and had i not had that i wouldnt have been able to feed him. He was only 4 days old. Its always best just to get some just in case for emergancies. I used the cow and gate read made formula. (dont give up breastfeeding if something like that happens though just take a brake from it for a day then go back to expressing or feedin) x

Hey Jessie! I just read about this topic last night in my hubby`s prenatal book. It said that you should not necessarily have formula on hand when your babies arrive home from the hospital because it could dissuade you from persevering when it comes to breastfeeding. Certainly Us-N-Kenzie`s situation is unfortunate but it is also not the norm. Also, like Elmera said, your body will/should provide the nutrients necessary via colostrum until your milk arrives (which you might already be leaking).

I would have agreed with the other people on here, until I had my daughter. My body did not want to produce milk. My doctor put me on medication to make my body produce milk and it still never did produce enough. The Drs had me pumping also to try and increase my milk production and it never worked. After 4 months I was so frustrated I gave up. My child lost a couple pounds before I was convinced that I needed to start giving her formula because I was hell bent on only breast feeding. I would recommend having some on hand, especially since you are having TWO babies to feed. There is no need to go through the frustration that I went through. This time around I am going to start and end with formula so I can enjoy the baby and not be stressed out about not producing milk. I am not saying to give up easily, but make sure that you know for sure that you are producing enough for both babies.

you do NOT need to buy formula why you wait for your milk to come in...your body will produce exactly what your baby needs, and frequent feeding from your baby does NOT mean it isnt being fed enough just that newborns do this. formula never used to exist and people fed their babies just fine! if you want to breastfeed you will be fine, if you WANT to supplement with formula then thats ok too but you dont HAVE to. i trained and qualified as a breastfeeding counsellor and im 27w pregnant with baby number 6! im always happy to answer any questions if you want to ask, and im not a breastfeeding nazi... i believe its a personal choice lol

I have been wondering the same thing.. however, I don`t want to give my baby formula unless I have to, especially not out of a bottle. I`ve read so many times that the baby can get confused if you use a bottle too soon and they won`t take to the nipple as well.

well kinda shocked your doctor hasnt given you any!! Today I got a free ( large ) sample of Similac Advance and I have heard very good things about Similac.. I dont think the ped is going to tell you what brand to buy... You want to have some formula because it could take a couple days for your breast milk to come in.. so you need to feed the baby something! Good Luck!

  1. Ok - why are women so terrified of forceps? I thought it was something fast and simple to get the baby out and didnt cause any excess pain. But the more Im reading up on a lot of these blogs on here I am seeing that a lot of you women had a really bad experience with forceps and refuse to use them again. Can someone explain the process of using forceps and your experience if you have one? Also what about the suctioning? Thank you!
