onj (285.2 days ago)Don`t bother with the testing if you ask me. If you do find out something is wrong, I suppose you may be able to prepare mentally, but you`ll deal with whatever happens anyway. They aren`t even 100% and all the worrying is only stressing you which isn`t good for the baby. I`d say thanks but no thanks, and go ahead with dreaming about your baby. Good luck and don`t worry!!
absoluties (295.1 days ago)If you`re definitely keeping the baby, just drop the whole test thing and save your time and energy. Down syndrome diagnostics are the least accurate, and most of the people who decide to keep the baby have a healthy normal child. Imagine this: if there`s a 70% chance your baby has down syndrome, would you keep him? what if he didn`t? they mostly don`t.
alex76 (295.5 days ago)My best friend had amnio as her results came back high risk, everything was fine and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, she said she wanted to do the amnio because she would have worried through her pregnancy if she didnt and also as she wouldnt continue with the pregnancy if something was wrong. As an earlier post says, if it wont affect your decision you shouldnt do the tests.
kater (295.6 days ago)if you know you wont abort, there really isn`t a point in doing amnio. the other non-invasive tests your doctor has ordered will give you an idea, but as the others have said there is an awful lot of false positives.good luck and stay positive
Sadielady (295.8 days ago)im 20 and had some sort of test for chromosomal problems with my first baby, not sure if its the same thing. but dont worry, im sure your baby will be fine 38 is the new 28 and if something is wrong you will love your baby just the same. GOOD LUCK AND DONT WORRY =D
RobinG (295.8 days ago)The quad or triple test you are referring are often known for false positives especially in advanced aged moms. More accurate is the nucal scan ultrasound combined with the papp-a protein test (US & blood drawn at approx 13 weeks.) That will give a good idea of any concerns and no risk of MC with it ~ then you can have the anatomy scan at 20 weeks, from that they can also tell if there will be a concern, I was 40 when I delivered and this is what I did, to me even 1% is to much of a risk for an amnio since there is a risk of MC and the papp-A and anatomy scans can give lots of info. WE both felt that if those tests showed a concern we`d consider an amnio but since they didnt we rfused the amnio, you dont HAVE to do them, it is up to you ~ They suggested a amnio and I said no ~ all the other things can back fine so no reason for it and I declined the quad test as well, no reason for it unless I planned to abort which I never would have done. I personally think the other things are enough to detect an issue if there is one ~ ((())) they may push for it but it is up to you ~ dont do what you feel is not for you ~ if there was a concern would you abort, ask yourself htat if yes then perhaps do the test if no then no reason to risk a MC in my opinion ~ you will get enough info from the scans ~ at 40 my little guys was born healthy :) the NT scan combined with the papp-a test is 90-95% accurate indetecting a problem ~ good enough for me :)
AvasMommy77 (295.9 days ago)OB`s offer that tes to all pregnant women, don`t worry, it has nothing to do with your age. I was nervous too because my sister had terminated a previous pregnancy based on that test, which shows genetic problems:( But everything turned out great and the sono tech even told me then what the sex of the baby was! I say do it even it it does turn out positive you still have to go see a specialist and I would get a 2nd opinion. Mommy-2-B is right, there are many false positives. Good luck! And don`t stress:)
vismum (295.9 days ago)ALL tests done during pregnancy are optional. If you are not concerned about the outcome (abnormalities etc..) then you don`t even need to have them done. But if the outcome is a concern for you, rest assured the chance of there being a chromosomal abnormality is extremely low. I had the screens done and got through the waiting period by reassuring myself that the likelihood of there being an abnormality was so low (I am 34). Good luck, I`m sure everything will be just fine:)
sweetbutterfly5711 (295.9 days ago)I`ve had it done too - and I was scared to get the answer, but once you find out there is nothing wrong then you will feel much better and now worry about if there is something wrong
Mommy-2-B (296.1 days ago)Blood tests screening for Down Syndrome have a HUGE percentage of false positives. If you wouldn`t abort anyways...what is the point in stressing out for nothing? My friend was told her baby had fluid on her brain and would be severely retarded. They advised her to abort, but she refused. When she was born, they drained the fluid, and had an operation or two. Now she is two years old and above average in intelligence. I was told at my 12 week ultrasound, that they saw fluid between the baby`s skull and scalp. They sent me to a genetic counselor who talked to me for an hour about all the horrible things that could be wrong with my baby. Then I went in to the neonatologist for a level 2 ultrasound...and he said...I don`t know what they think they saw, but there is nothing there. You can relax now...there is nothing wrong with your baby. I wish you luck in whatever you choose.
