mommy-2-b (164.9 days ago)I bought a Medela Pump in Style Advanced from Baby Depot. Used coupon, so it went from $280 to $230. Contrary to what is written below...they cannot be returned. Even with a receipt and unopened. I had bought a used one, but resold it and bought a new one after my breastfeeding class. It is not safe to reuse pumps unless they are the hospital pumps. Breastmilk from the previous owner can get into the pump itself and pass HIV, Hepatitis, etc to your baby. I figured that was a load of crap just to scare you until I went home and dismanteled the used pump. Sure enough, there were milk remnants inside the pump. I opted to spend the money on a new one, as I would never forgive myself if my baby got a disease because I was too cheap! I think it is a personal choice. I also know that after spending the money on a non-returnable pump that it will encourage me even more to make breastfeeding work. Best of luck to you!
sandrad (167.3 days ago)I am in the same boat, I dont think we are going to go out and buy a pump, unless we are given one as a gift. My husband suggested that maybe we rent one for a month or two to see how often we really need it and would use it. Yes in a way it would be wasting money for a month or two then turn around and buy one. I am not 100% sure what we are going to do but a pump is not on the top of my list....or at least for now its not... Im sure this hasnt really helped alot but just letting you know you are not alone. Good luck on what ever you decide.
mommythethird (167.9 days ago)I bought a pump with my first (the Medela pump in style). I used it for both of my boys and found that it was VERY worth the money. As I ended the feedings for the 2nd however, I noticed it didn`t have as much sucking capability as it did with the first. I used the pump a year for both boys. I`m planning on renting this time.
tto (168.5 days ago)You can rent through the hospital top of the line Medela pumps (the best) by the month. So then it isn`t a huge investment and you have access to a really good pump. If things work out, you can buy one- but make sure it is a high quality pump. The cheap walmart crap ones will hurt and may damage your supply.
windchime (168.5 days ago)I wondered about that too, and after asking around I`m going to get a pump. I`ve heard they`re handy for encouraging milk production, and like the last person said - you can use it for when you`re traveling or someone is babysitting.
pidgysmommy (168.7 days ago)get a pump, a good one i had just the hand pump one by avent and it kinda sucked, well im not sure if my milk supply just sucked or the pump but your gonna want a night out or a few glasses of wine adn its nice to be able to have milk on hand for sitters or daddy to feed AND you`ll have to pump out after having a few drinks. plus if your way from baby for a lng time somehow...it happens...youll be engorged adn not even nursing the baby will drain them enough OR they willbe too tender to nurse right depending how long ur away. if ur scared just dont open it till u see but its nice to have n hand. good luck.
kelly.m (168.9 days ago)Hi i plan to b/feed and have bought my own pump. You said about the baby not latching on well then you can still just express and that way the baby is still getting your milk.
Good luck xxx
kater (169.2 days ago)have a look on ebay, i got mine for $30 including postage!! i breastfed for 14 months last time and plan to do the same again. i found it was good for when my hubby wanted to feed bub, or if we needed a babysitter, or when mixing up cereal, or making babys food, i just pumped a little milk to mix in. i found a pump to be invaluable. i would say like some of the others have said, only around 3% of women truly CANNOT feed their babys because of lack of supply, so if breastfeeding is your choice, there isnt much of a chance you wont be able to. if you can get one for free, go for it
riknlee (169.3 days ago)Hi, I breastfed my three girls for 15 months, 2 years and then 10 months. I had a manual pump and it was very handy. This time i have gone for an electric. Far better than hand expressing. go for it
gr8scottswife (169.3 days ago)I`m putting it on my registry.
ilurockstarr (169.3 days ago)I`m going to wait and make sure I`m capable of breast feeding before purchasing, I think that`s the most sensible thing to do
= )
captshelley (169.3 days ago)Put it on your registry and try to get it for free. You can always take it back.
emy (169.4 days ago)Put it on your babies r us registry after the shower. And they will send you a 15% off coupon after the baby is born. jamison was born dec 27 and I bought my pump feb 7th. I would def wait. You may have problems, or just feel like it is not for you. But if you are going to BF. I would say you def need one. For going back to work, or even getting out of the house! Good luck
lukesmyboy (169.4 days ago)Only about 3 percent of the entire female population is unable to produce enough milk to support their children. Other women may just have difficulty breastfeeding as the result of a lack of proper instruction or support from health care professionals. Chances that you will not make enough milk are VERY slim! If your not going to work you really wont NEED a pump at all or you could get a used one for cheep!
lovefranky (169.4 days ago)i`ve been nursing my baby for 5 1/2 months and have never pumped. i dont work. if my mom is watching him she feeds him formula or if i need a break. i feel like all i do is breastfeed. it was very painful for awhile and now he has a tooth so its painful because he nurses so much because he is hurting. but he is very strong and healthy and happy.
