I`m on my Second pregnancy and had a really hard time trying to breast feed my son. So this are the things I would get breast pump, breast milk storage system, nursing pads, nursing bras, nursing shirts, topical cream, boppy pillow i loved mine. and i havent tried it but latch assist cream. i heard it works

nipples nade of steel! lol no really keep an eye out for thrush and mastits i had to see 2 doctors and 2 lactician consultants b4 i was diagnosed with thrush and mastits at the same time. Cream helps and a nice hot bath or shower in the beginning when the nipples are sore. some women don;t get sore hopefuly u will be one of them. Good luck

I would recommend having nipple shields on you in case your baby has a hard time latching. My daughter had a terrible time latching and I ended up drying up before she was 6 months old. I only found out about the nipple shield after I had already switched her to formula. Hopefully you won`t need to use it, but they`re so cheap (can be found at a lot of pharmacies), why not have a package with you at the hospital!

every comment on here has great advice!! there a few things that i could not live without.. like wash cloths or burp cloths that i would place either under my boob or between my boob and bra while she was nursing because she always seem to drool out the bottom side. The lanolin cream worked great for me the first few weeks but then i switched to a non-lanolin cream and that seemed to work even better. i still use dispolable nursing pad incerts for my bras because i change them out about 3 times a day ( i have a large supply of milk still to this day, shes almost 5 months) And also great support from those around you, my mom and aunts all breast fed so it was very easy to talk to them about it because there are many things that will come up and questions you will have. good luck with it and i truly hope that you stick with it because it is such an amazing bonding experience!!!

Once my milk came in, I was surprised how big my chest had gotten. I never could have predicted the right nursing bra size. Once I knew, I mail ordered a supply of them. They get milky-wet sometimes, so it`s not a bad idea to get more than one or two, and in the stores I always found that they only had one of each size available. I ordered online and they sent me 7 all in one box, and I had a fresh one each day of the week.

i found that, along with the things the others have mentioned, a cloth nappy- my daughter would `dribble` quite a bit and i would get milk all over my clothes, and the side i wasn`t feeding from would leak quite a bit too, so i tucked the nappy in under my boob, so any spillage went onto that instead of me!!

Educate yourself a bunch about it (like you are doing now) I was pompous and thought it would come more naturally, boy was I wrong. I had major issues and lost the battle at six weeks. Now he is formula fed and I`ve had to make peace with that, but it is really hard since we know how good breast milk is for babies. One thing I would suggest is renting a pump before buying one. I think you can rent one from La Leche or your hospital. We got a $300 pump that is now just sitting there...I wish I`d rented one, I could have spent that $300 on some forumla cause its damned expensive. Good luck, you can do it!

A Bobby pillow-- that was the best thing a friend got me.

You definitely need a `My Brest Friend` nursing pillow - not a Boppy. Once you try one, you`d never want to use a Boppy again! And to let you know that when someone tells you that it shouldn`t hurt at all if you`re doing correctly, they`re WRONG! It does hurt in the beginning, but it ends up being okay after a couple of weeks. I agree with emy - I used those cami tank tops with everything. I barely ever wore a true nursing bra. Also, a good pump (I have Medela`s Pump-In-Style Advanced) if you`re planning on using a bottle at all. I nursed my daughter exclusively for 15 months and had supply issues quite a bit so I would recommend `Mother`s Milk Mate Plus` to help with lactation if you ever encounter that problem. In addition, I set small goals for myself - 3 mos, 6 mos, 9 mos, etc - so I wouldn`t feel overwhelmed. It was truly one of the most difficult things I`ve had to do in my life, but I don`t regret it at all and plan to nurse my son (when he arrives) for at least a year. Good Luck!!!!

the lanolin cream works so good it definitely helped alot. I might not have been able to do it without it. Soothies help a lot too but you wont use them that long, just for the first week so dont buy a lot. I liked my nursing pillow too. My back hurt from nursing at first so the boppy really helped, and as my baby got bigger he used it for tummy time and then for support when he was learning to sit up. That is everything i needed at the hospital and for the first month so i hope that it helps! I hope breastfeeding goes well for you, it wasnt easy for me, it was frustrating and painful but that all went away after we got used to it and now he is 6 months and i`m still nursing. For relief from engorgement i would take a warm shower and hold a wash cloth on my chest and push out some of the milk and then i would feed him when i got out and i would feel better, i never pumped but it probably works better. I have always given formula too but not that often.

Those nursing pillows are terrific!! I can`t say enough about those. Being in a comfortable position to begin with definitely helps. When I wasn`t using the pillow for nursing (when my daughter was old enough) I would put it on the floor around her in case she fell over!

PATIENCE...I lived in a sports bra with breast pads doused in lansinoh cream. I felt like my nipples got weed whacked. You def. need encouragement from those around you. It stinks when people are like `Why are you doing that?` `Is`nt it a pain?` You can do it! Good Luck Another suggestion...Get a bunch of cami tank tops that you can just pull down a little. that way you dont have to lift your shirt or worry about ehat you are wearing. i wear a cami under everything. Also I would suggest a nursing cover from Bebe Au Lait.

Oh I might add - support. Lots of it. From your partner, friends and family. Find out your local LaLeche League contacts, local Lactation consultants. Read a few books on breast feeding - Dr. Newman is good. Watch www.breastcrawl.org/video. And believe that you can do it!

captshelley (142.5 days ago)
you need patience, pain tolerance, determination, nipple sheilds, nipples sheilds, nipple sheilds, lanolin cream and more pain tolerance.

erphn (142.6 days ago)
Everything UKmama said - plus maybe some lanolin cream.
