AmBear (200.1 days ago)My 2 1/2 year old is crazy crazy busy for his age. I have people saying I need to take him to the doctor... But what I say is... What is wrong with that kind of energy, I would love to be able to go and go like that. He just needs something positive to do with it.

Deletetattoozipp (200.3 days ago)Both my cousin and I were diagnosed as being ADHD when he was about 7 years old and I was about 5 years old. My cousin was put on medication and I was not. They tried for years and years to adjust my cousin’s medication so that it would work...but it never did. He did horrible in all of his classes and eventually dropped out of high school. My mom worked with me very closely and taught me how to control my excitability and over-activeness without meds and I was the straight “A” student all through elementary school through college. My son was diagnosed as being ADHD at the age of 3 (big surprise there) and like my mom I chose NOT to medicate my child. Instead I changed his diet and worked closely with him one on one to teach him how to control himself. He is now 4 ½, still ADHD, but he has learned to use his excitability with other things (like sports) and is now a GREAT student, friend, and son!!!

Deletealex76 (203.2 days ago)I was diagnosed with this when I was 12, although then you were classed `hyperactive` I was never given any drugs but was made to start a diet which completely ruled out artificial colourings, prservatives etc. It worked for me and clamed me down alot, I still avoid certainf doos now. Also artificial smells that are obvious say car air fresheners and dolls, in my day it was Strawberry Shortcake, they can set it off too.

Deleteblessedmom (203.2 days ago)Look into chiropratic, it really helped my son , as well as a change in his diet might be good. try to avoid food with dye in it. Theres even some homepathic drops to help if it was very bad. There is so many side effect to those drugs doctor are so happy to prescribe. Go with you instinct.

Deletekristenpaxton (203.8 days ago)My son is 7 and was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5. He has not once taken any sort of medication. My doc actually advised me against it! He said that if he were tested again between 8-10 he probably wouldnt `really` have ADHD. Most parents and docs just forget how active children can be and since they cant keep up think something is wrong. My son has an attention span of about 5 mins at most unless its something he likes so i just have to remind him every few mins to keep him on task. All of his teachers so far have been more than willing to help me with that.

Deletetto (204.1 days ago)If you can take care of the problem through diet, then by all means try it, but if it doesn`t work- seriously consider medication. I am a second grade teacher and this is the grade (sometimes even by first grade) that kids with ADHD clearly are behind. I have three students that all made major progress when they were put on meds. Unfortunately for them, that was too late and they all were already at least one full year behind. What`s worse is that they know they are behind and don`t understand why. They blame themselves as being stupid and somehow less in value as their classmates that they know don`t struggle. Once they got on meds, they had to relearn everything from Kindergarten and first grade that they missed before plus everything from second grade. They can make significant gains, but it is said that they can never catch up. It is like trying to pass a car going the same speed you are- the other kids are making gains too. It breaks my heart- even once the problem is addressed by meds, the damage is done to their self esteem. I`m not saying the drugs are always the answer- but sometimes they truly are (think of high blood pressure or diabetes). Try holistic methods, but if his teacher is telling you the ADHD is interfering with his learning- don`t mess around, the consequences in the long run are far worse. There are many different kinds of medication out there and doses too- you have to find the right one. Also, a school setting is much different than a home setting. What may be naughty at home may be drastically different in school. You probably don`t expect your child to do the same kinds of things that a teacher expects. As a mom, I understand not wanting to put my kids on meds, but I`ve seen the alternative- it isn`t worth it to me personally.

DeleteHolly28 (204.3 days ago)BTW remember, it takes time and many medication adjustments in most cases to find the dosage that works for a person. Many parents put their kids on meds and take them off immediately finding they make their child even more hyper or groggy...not giving the drs the change to find the right medication or dosage that works for the child.

DeleteHolly28 (204.3 days ago)I have ADHD myself, and was diagnosed long before they started handing the diagnosis out willy nilly. I took meds from the age of about 5-13. What they did for me was teach me to regulate myself enough to slow my mind down and do whatever it was that I needed to do. As a result, I was an A student and am the ONLY member of my family to have EVER gone to university. I am not saying that using drugs is the best choice, but for me it changed my life and gave me a future that I would have never had without them. Many many people will advocate against the use of drugs, all I am saying is don`t just make the choice to not use them lightly. I wouldn`t be who or where I am today if it wasn`t for them.

DeleteRobinG (204.3 days ago)A mom posted here that she knows of a boy who had it and was told to medicate and mom didnt want to so she instead did some research an gave him organic foods and foods without the hormone injections and the docs were amazed at what a new boy he was and how he now didnt need meds and was fine ~ it was a wonderful thing.. I shared the story with a mom I know who`s son also has ADHD and she too was told by her doc to eliminate foods with hormones and go organic as much as possible and she said she`d love to but cant afford it ~ I personally feel that if you can afford it to try it ~ we already know of one success story :)
Edit
Deletemonica9 (204.3 days ago)though i was diagnosed with it when i was 16 yrs old, i became addicted to the medication and it was the worst 3 years of my life!! i had to stop the meds and i am fine. dont medicate your child especially if you dont think its that bad.

DeleteChristinasWar (204.4 days ago)Have you looked into diet changes? Removing wheat, whey or even food colors from his diet? Changing things at home? Good luck I know how difficult it can be.. Just educate yourself before you give any meds!
