Pregnancy-poll poll Does getting an epidural increase the chances that you will need an episiotomy, forceps, or suction? Please comment.
(Pregnancy poll by windchime, 83 days ago)
Yes it increases the chances of needing an episiotomy.
Yes, it increases the chances that baby will be delivered with forceps or suction.
No there is no correlation with any of these.

I have actually heard that an epidural helps you relax and can make it easier for your cervix to dialate because of this. I had an epidural, slept for 7 hours and woke up complete and ready to push. I think the use of episiotomies, etc, really has to do with the size of the baby- but I`m not a doctor, so what do I know! :)

I read something not too long ago that said women who get an epidural can expect to have a lengthier labour, because it slows the process down. Early stages of labour can be increased by 10%, and then later stages of labour can be increased by as much as 30%! If you`re going to get an epidural, make sure you`re well into active labour, because if you get it too early on your labour will be quite a bit longer.

not a medical fact but imo it would increase the need for almost everything because you cant actually feel whats going on down there, cant feel where the baby is, cant feel how hard your pushing etc. it may sound silly, but i fully believe its going to be quicker in the end without the epi if u canget through it. plus, cathedars dont sound fun, and id like to be able to walk/leave the hospital as soon as i can afterwards.

I had an Epi with my first!!! I LOVED IT!!!! I would say get one! I had the best labor and delivery the first time! I hope this one is as good!!! Good LUCK!!!! I LOVE EPIDURALS!!!!!!

I had an epi, but didn`t need any of these. I couldn`t feel when I needed to push or how well I was doing - but they coached me through it telling me when and how to push. It was actually the more relaxed part of the whole experience for me. It took me about 1 hour to push out my daughter (my 1st). My 2nd is coming any time now!

I didnt have an epidural, and the doctor still had to use suction and forceps to get her out. I did not have an episotomy but probably should have, ended up with alot of stitches and she was only 6lbs.12oz. I`m really hoping that this next one wont be much bigger!

statisticly there is a connection with all those... I had an epidural, and when it came time to push it had worn off. I was induced and during pushing was the ONLY time they took my moniters off cause they could tell I was feeling when to push. I didn`t have forceps, no suction, no episiotmy.. and I had a 8pound 4ounce girl. Pushed for 35mins. I`m ready for the epidural again. :)

I had an epi and felt EVERYthing! I felt the contractions the stretching etc etc. The epi wears off some or all by delivery which is why they dont like to give it past a certain dialation so you dont risk being numb still ~ as far as tearing etc the baby size, massaging you get to help stretch from doc etc etc makes a big dif and an epi has no bearing on that ~ if you are numb or feel it all and your baby is to big or doc didnt help to stretch you could tear or need suction etc etc. If you are trying to deliver a 9-10 lbs baby those things could happen whether you were med free or with an epi ~ (())

Heather-08-01 (82.7 days ago)
There most certainly is a correlation between both. It doesn`t mean it will happen, but does increase the chance of one or both. If you can`t feel well enough to know when to stop pushing then chances are you will tear or need an episiotomy - like wise, if you can`t feel well enough to push your baby out alone you are much more likely to need forceps or vacuum - do the research, don`t just take the word of women here.
