coltonsmom`s poll Show results | Hide results

Baby-poll poll My son is 12 1/2 months old and I`ve recently switched him off formula to whole milk and he`s eating `real` food now, not baby food. Which is all great, but for the past 2 days, his poops are very hard and little pebbles. He usually has 2 or 3 softer poops a day. What food(s) or juice(s) should I give him to get his poops a little softer now?

My mom told me to always give a baby water with some karo syrup in it, works like a charm (and she raised 7 kids). (She said 4oz with about a tablespoon of karo syrup once a day) It`s just works as a stool softner not a laxative.

make sure he`s eating lots of fruit...the foods highest in sorbitol (undigestable sugar) are prunes, cherries, and pears. Stay away from apple juice, because it will plug him up more.

have u tried prune juice & whole grains....harder poops are normal as long as they arent hurting or straining,.... poops will change as meals change... my oldest son had problems with that..and u will know if its hurts!

Ok, this is all great feed back. He loves fruit, and I give him fruit with almost every meal. He has strawberries and/or watermelon with his breakfast and lunch (along with - if it`s breakfast, cereal/toast, if it`s lunch, he`ll have ham and cheese or bits of some kind of meat/protien)... will bump up the veggies more though he usually does ok with veggies at dinner time. His poops do look more normal, as in getting older, but still only once a day now and harder than I think is really OK for him just yet. Maybe not though, it may be normal. Still, I`m going to add more veggies to his diet and definitely give him more juice too, so BIG thanks for that advice. I went out and bought more formula, he wont drink it now. And, I also bought a dozen jars of 3rd stage baby food too to try to see if that will help a bit but he doesn`t want anything to do with me feeding him anymore. He`ll shake his head now when I try to feed him baby food. :)

res... 12 months is age one lol... but my daughter had the same problem. i gave her a sippy cup of juice for each cup of milk. then her poop became normal, but remember its not supposed to be runny anymore its supposed to be like our poop lol

Im not too sure about the poop thing, but milk isnt really good forpeople like the docs say. youd be a lot better if you were taking calcium pills. milk is espicially not good for children that young. My sis was giving it to my niece for a little bit, but switched here to rice milk and someitmes soy milk for a change, and she was so much healthier after that. Rice milk is better tasting i heard then soy tho, but my niece loves it and for her calcium she eats yogurt and takes children vitamins.

I wouldn`t give him whole milk. My doc said to avoid it until age 1.
