Yes my son`s looked like he had been punched in the gums. He also bled really bad when they finally came in. I took him to the pediatrician (dentist wouldn`t see him yet because of his age) twice and they said it was rare but normal. It was horrid :(

actually, my 5 year old is getting her `big teeth` right now, and her gums above where the new teeth are coming through look like you described. she says it doesnt hurt, but then i dont know that getting adult teeth hurts anyone does it? there are special dummys which have a funny shaped teat-like a mouthguard shape, which you can put the teething get onto, and its supposed to make it easier for the gel to do its work
