feb2009 (1219.4 days ago) Lanolin cream helped and little, but most helpful for me was seeking help at a breastfeeding clinic. Making sure the baby is fully latched on is the key to healing and preventing sore nipples! Don`t give up though, it will get easier and feel more natural before to long. But for sure get some help from a qualified person.
EvaV (1219.7 days ago) Lanolin did nothing for me. I pretty much walked around topless the first few weeks after baby to let my nipples get lots of air. I don`t care what any lactation consultant says or anyone else- breastfeeding hurts. My baby has always had a great `textbook` latch, even according to the lactation consultant and my nipples killed for the first several weeks. They still hurt at 8 weeks but that is a totally different issue involving thrush. If you are pumping, make sure the plastic pumping funnels or whatever they are called are large enough for your nipples and that pumping isn`t causing your nipples to be swollen. Whatever you do don`t give baby formula or expressed milk in a bottle! It`s too early for that and too much of a risk for nipple confusion and/or insufficient milk supply!
jenny504 (1220.1 days ago) I agree with all the ladies, one other thing i did was have a hot shower right before i new it was tiem to breastfeed, it helped with the soreness and got my milk flowing better so babe didn`t have to suck so hard. My baby latched fine from the start and i still got sore nipples for a few weeks, then it turned into thrush mastitis and that is not fun. A lactation consulatant is a great idea then you can be reassured you are feeding properly and the pain will go away when the nipples toughen up.
megandgrace (1220.1 days ago) i agree with all the ladies, but i did want to say that if the Lanolin cream doesnt seem to help try a lanolin free cream, that is what i did and i saw a great improvement!! i still use it sometimes now when i notice a little dry skin around my nipple and i have been breastfeeding for 9 months. Just stick with it, it will get easier i promise!!!
lisa-82 (1220.6 days ago) put ice pads on your boobs after feeding and use that cream stuff to help moisturize your nipples!! that stuff works great! after about 2 weeks i was in pain for about 2weeks! and when i started icing my boobs it helped lots!! i used to dred feeding time b/c it would hurt...
njstewy (1220.6 days ago) I agree with everyone, make sure that she`s latched on right. When I breastfeed in the beginning while I was still in the hosptital my nipples where bruised from my LO sucking really hard. I guess it goes for the baby. I ended up stopping at 2 mo breastfeeding but the latch on still made my nipples sore. I guess that they will `toughin up` the longer you do it though. But the best relief you can get is that lanolin cream.
Luis and Rosalanis Mami (1220.6 days ago) Make sure the whole nipple and areola is going into her mouth, you need to brush her cheek to stimulate her to open her mouth wider and when she opens it widest insert the breast in, it may take a few tries and if she isn`t latched on right just stick your finger in her cheek to break the latch to try again, it should feel better after doing this, use some lansinoh cream on your nipples also, it will help moisturize and it will feel better. Hope this helps : )
cadesmommy (1220.6 days ago) I just saw your baby was just born so it is probably normal. Mine cracked and bled for a bout a week and half. I promise it gets better. Your body was made to breastfeed. You should feel so proud for doing this :) After every feeding you should put some of your own breastmilk on your nipples. Also they make this lanolin (spelling?) cream. Do you have any of it? Good luck hun, the first part sucks but I promise it is amazing once you keep doing it!
cadesmommy (1220.6 days ago) When you were in the hospital did anyone look at your latch? She might not be latched on right.
LarasMommy (1220.7 days ago) I sometimes use the Medela nipple shield and it helps me. You can buy it at Target or Babies R Us.
