monica9 (1173.6 days ago) yeah, my niece`s and nephews from both sides eat whatever, whenever. our 3 yr old nephew is constantly going into the cabinet and getting junk food...i mean NONSTOP!! our other nieces and nephews eat fruit snacks for breakfast! thats terrible. i will give my baby sweets but it wont be everyday and it definitely wont be until later in the day.

Kids who are very restricted from ever having it have shown over the years to find it hide it and hoard it to eat when they can secretly. That only adds to eating disorders. There is a bit of a diff in the diet of an infant child under 12 months and the diet of an 18 month old. It is not uncommon for a child to ask for a cookie when she sees them or knows they are there (which is why I dont buy them all the time), esp when it has been a holiday and surely treats are around but a parent is to use common sense in not allowing the treat til the meal has been eaten, which it seems your bro did. If he is doingthis with every meal or every day then yes that would be a concern. There are def problems with child obesity today but it is also do in part to the food they are eating is filled with preservatives and added junk (some `healthy foods` are full of stuff that when really examined arent so healthy after all), lack of excersize, the `cleaning off your plate theory (you should encourage your child to eat most of their dinner but like when I was growing up you always had to clear your plate and when you are full and still see food that adds to over eating). There is a very fine line between the child needing to eat a healthy amount and a child who is made to eat more then they really need to if the plate is full of food. Many families also eat convenience foods which is also full of stuff that contributes to weight issues. The weight concerns of today are not just because the child had a cookie after breakfast, there is SO much more to it then having a treat. When I was in school we didnt have soda and drink machines etc etc. At lunch time you have milk juice or water during the day you had water, soda machines are in all the schools I`ve been too ~ now thats a problem. My sister has twins who are in kindergartern in a private school in NJ she was appauled to learn that in her school they get recess once a week outside instead of all days because learning is more important. Insid eplay time is structure reading and play group (sitting and playing board games) They have gym a couple days a week so feel that is enough. Well I totally disagree. Kids need not only run and play time but fresh air and time to be active. Reading and playing board games instead of outside running and playing is keeping the child less active. ESP in Kinder when they should be able to be `kids`. And as far as a cookie, there are various types of cookies, she most likley was referring to the treat kind but some are good for you too and not uncommon for a child to ask for when even referring to a cracker or healthier cookie, no different then what we are giving our infants to snack on. ~ hope this helps :)
EvaV (1173.7 days ago) My baby girl is only 3 months old but I am definitely concerned about the rise in childhood obesity and the availability of junk food to children whenever they want it. What I don`t want is for my daughter to have is an unhealthy relationship with food and to feel restricted.
