i usually try to put her in bed awake to fall asleep on her own. but she often falls asleep while eating

Wow, I must have gotten super lucky with Gavin. He`s always gone to sleep on his own. He is 14 months old now and gets put in his crib at 8 (awake) and sleeps till 6:45 on weekdays and 8:30 on the weekends.
