Pregnancy-poll poll Should I get rid of my kitten when the baby comes? (She is very destructive and playful, I don`t think she`ll be good around the baby)
(Pregnancy poll by Janice2369, 265 days ago)
No, keep the kitten
Yes, don't take any chances with the new baby
Give her a little time to see how she will react to the baby

I don`t think that people who would get rid of a pet should get a pet in the first place.

Just keep the kitten away from the baby. Don`t leave them alone in the same room! lol! Keep your eye on it and it will be fine.

I got a kitten for my older DD. This Kitten was born the same day as my baby. I thought it was special. The kitten was so cute and I have NEVER gotten rid of an animal. BUT the kitten would jump in the crib and `play` with the baby and wake her up and stratch her( just playing though). I tried to seperate the cat @ night and she would cry all night b/c she was lonely. It was really heart breaking to hear this @ night. I paid 200.00 for one of those vet plans and that included a 12 month 24.99 per month plan. That could not be cancelled.( I was out 450. for only having her 2 month) So I made the decision to adpot her out she was only 15 wks old. I found a nice lady that put her cat down a few month before that. It was hard but I knew it was the right thing to do. I dont think I would have adopted her out if she was older. Since you say shes kitten I tell you to consider it. You might want to see when the baby comes. She maybe fine with the baby. I tried everything but she kept messing with the baby and It was hard but I know she has a good home and will be taken care of.

we declawed our cat and she`s the same annoying cat as she was before she was declawed. I`m not concerned about her clawing the baby so much as falling asleep on baby and smothering baby by accident. I think it`s only partly a wives tale because I swear my cat will try to smother me and I`m an adult who can shove her off me and baby isn`t able to do that. As far as declawing, it may sound cruel, but it was either that or give cat to the pound where she would more than likely get put down. Also, there are lots of dogs out there that get tails docked, ears clipped and dew claws removed. Wear anything wool? lambs get their tails chopped off at the base of the spine before their weaned. There are a lot of people out there that need to gain a little perspective on things.

i strongly believe that pets are a life long commitment. unless it will go to a loving home keep it. let it be inside/outside cat. there are literally hundreds of kittens and dogs at the pound who are going to be killed

DO NOT GET RID OF CAT. I HAVE COUPLE OF KITTENS AND THEY HAVE NEVER BOTHERED MY LIL BOY.

shelley75 (264.7 days ago)
i also agree with Melissajoanne...please don`t declaw....my kitties never ever scatched my babies until they were older than two and only then when they deserved it (like pulling tails or ears).

MelissaJoanne (264.7 days ago)
I wanted to add, since it`s been mentioned: please do not declaw your kitty. Aside from being Very bad for the cat (half of their toe is surgically removed. Ow! It mutilates their foot), it`s also bad for a cat that`s going to be around children. Clawing is a cat`s first line of defense - a cat that can`t scratch bites instead, and a cat bite is far worse than a cat scratch. Also, declawed cats are far more likely to develop behavioral problems beyond biting, such as peeing around the home, outside of the litter box. My daughter sometimes pulls fur or an ear, because she's very little and still learning, and my cats have never tried to scratch her.

don`t get rid of the kitten I am sure it will be fine. My cat barely even bothered with the baby maybe an occasional sniff...as for cats killing babies, it is completely ridiculous don`t let that influence you one bit. One thing I have heard before but I am not sure if it is true is that if you have a cat when you have a baby the baby will not have allergies to cats as they will have built up an immunity to it??? Good luck with whatever you decide :)

Jenakers, I agree its an old myth that cats can take away a baby`s breath/smother a baby. My husband and I had to google it one day to prove to my own mother (who hates cats) that it was a myth. She was really convinced my cats would kill my baby. She always tells me cats are evil which I completely disagree with.

lisamarie8503 (264.7 days ago)
Dont get rid of the poor kitten just cause you are having a baby. A cat is not like a dog, im sure it will pay zero attention to the kid. The only thing I would make sure you do is declaw it. Keep it and it will learn to deal with the baby. I always HATE when people throw away their pets when they have a baby. There are more than enough animals in the humane society now days since the economy is crap and people cant afford their pets.

Cats smothering babies is an old wives tale with no truth to it at all. It is believed that SIDS was actually the cause of the old wives tale. The other part of the wives tale is that a cat can steal a baby`s breath...rediculous.

bethk (264.7 days ago)
Ive always been told to be weary of baby and cat/kitten together specially alone! The cat can smother baby by sitting on its face! I cant remeber where I heard this but it was on a document which freaked me out!

MelissaJoanne (264.7 days ago)
Don`t do it!!! It`s so sad when people get rid of kitty because baby is coming. Cats are generally great with babies. They can be surprisingly gentle, even an otherwise crazy cat. They tend to be either best buddies with a baby, or they go on about their business as though the baby isn`t there. I have three cats that love my daughter, and I used to work at a cat shelter too. :-)

Thank you all for your comments! Seems like I might take your advice and see how she reacts to the baby.

My cats(we have two) are awesome with my son. When he was a baby they might of laid near him but they never bothered him. Honestly, they never really noticed him. Now they like him and he gets so excited when they come near him. His first word was even kitty kitty :) Also, my cats still have their claws and I never found it a problem.

jenakers (264.7 days ago)
My kitty was excellent with our baby. He absolutly LOVES the kitty now that he is older. They are BFF!

STCT (264.7 days ago)
I thought we would need to give away my cat for the same reasons. I`m so glad we didn`t because she is just fine with her. She`ll walk up to my daughter see what she is doing and they walk away. Also my dog is so hipper (he`s still in puppy mood)but he is also so great with her.

a-mum2b (264.7 days ago)
if you have any relatives that would not mind taking care of the kitten for a few months untill your baby gets a little older, maybe then the kitten will have matured a little by then.

If your already saying you don`t think she will be good around the baby, I think you already know :( sorry little kitten!
