Disposable all the way. Why make our life so much more difficult if it really doesn`t have an impact on our kids fanny? My LO did just as well on cloth as disposable. I am all for being environmentally responsible, but not to the point that it drives me crazy. Cloth diapers were too much of a hassle.

I have read the studies that say its just as harmful and they are basing that on doing multiple washes and rinses and using chemicals like bleach and hard detergents to wash them with. The few diapers I was just get thrown into the wash with my daughter`s clothes with vinegar and baking soda.. how can you passably argue that that is comparable to 200 years in a landfill??? Either way.. I EC and go through less than 5 cloths a week and never use wipes.

Well a third option that doesn`t involve either landfills or extra detergent/water is gDiapers. You can flush them when you use the bathroom anyway - no extra water, or throw them away and they biodegrade in 30 days - no landfill waste. Though, I normally use them with a prefold rather than a G insert, and do a load of cloth diaps with vinegar once a week, which is not a tremendous amount of extra washing (and they sit in a closed container with baking soda - no smell).

not sure who funds the studies, but I have heard that research indicates that the environmental damage done to landfills with disposable diapers is equivalent to the amount of resources used to clean cloth diapers...it's nice to know that we have options.

I would go cloth in a second if I had about $300 to spend on a set... I know it`s cheaper in the long run, and I DISPISE disposables, but it`s just the inital cost of getting it going that I dont have (can`t find any new or even used sets around here for less than $300)

Lol i love you! i use cloth now i just switched about a few weeks ago and i love them sooo much! and to those who said that its just as harmful because u use a bunch of water and stufff well you do know that water is a RENEWABLE resource?

I was raised by tree huggers and hippies. So I was in cloth diapers and homemade baby food. I seemed to turn out just fine. These are things I want to do with my little one!!

i have had a great experience with Cloth Diapers... i rinse them out really well after he soils them then i wash them every other day...i dont wash them with the other clothes.... I love using cloth diapers and will use them with my future children

There is no research that is not put out by companies that manufacture disposable diapers that indicates that cloth diapers are just as harmful to the environment as disposables. All research that points to that assumption is financed by companies such as Kimberly Clark and other companies that make disposable diapers. There is no comparison to cloth. I cannot in good concience use disposable diapers.

newcitymom do you EC your babies?

HarimauDahan (1069.9 days ago)
I agree with newcitynewmom when I was pregnant with my first I did a lot of reading and research on what would be the best method for my daughter and the environment and learned that both are equally harmful in their own ways. So of course after learning that I chose the most convenient way and went disposable.

I would like to use cloth diapers but it`s just not possible for me. I live in an apartment with only 1 washer and 1 dryer per 2 floors, it`s 3.00 for a small load, and they`re always being used as is! Not to mention I wouldn`t want them sitting around for days in my apartment Yuck! I have enough on my plate right now! lol

newcitynewmom (1070 days ago)
Based on the detergent and washing of cloth diapers, most scientists find cloth and disposable to be equally bad for the environment. If you`re really concerned for the environment, try elimination communication instead.

armymom (1070 days ago)
ooh well.. I`m not about to have poop and pee mixing around in my washer and dryer. Gross.

Oops I said Yes when I meant to say No. I did try out the cloth diapers and I found them useless and horrible and icky! I bought the whole cabwdl of cloth diaper stuff and the stains ohh yuk and she seemed to be wet so much quicker and if I didnt change her quickly her clothes would be wet too! I sold them all and soo glad I turned to disposables! I know they take longer to decompose but my baby girls bum is better dry to me than wet and which means less nappy rashes as I did find she had it all the time with them! I did try dif powders too so I know it wasnt that - I know my comment sounds very selfish but at least I did try x

  1. I`ve re-thought the moderating of the member-postings. How does this sound? Let`s change it to usage, rather than length of time as a member. Say your first 10 or 20 polls, questions and pictures need to be approved by a Mod or something like that. Someone posting the racist polls and adding the kiddie porn is unlikely to participate as a normal member. Once you are verified as a regular member you`re no longer monitored.
  2. How long did it take you to get pregnant after you got your IUD (Mirena) out?
  3. Twilight valentines for 7 year olds... appropriate or not? DD received a valentine with a very... sultry smoldery Edward on the front and I was just kind of surprised that anyone would buy those for 7 year olds? I know I`m on the conservative side in general on those kinds of things, but this really surprised me!
  4. My daughter is almost 5 months and 3 weeks ago my hair started falling out. I know it`s normal but how long did it last for you?
  5. With all the issues going on with the site maybe we need an updated list on Mods. Obviously Laura is the one to go to but if there is a concern and it needs immediate attention and a Mod is online it may be good to know who is who so you can reach out to them. Mods, can you please post here so we know who you are. (Esp since some profiles names had to be changed because of recent log on issues)
  6. Anyone wanna try http://parentspuzzlepieces.spruz.com/ a free community site I just made? Let me know if you want the password and would want to help add things to it!!
  7. I think with all the posting issues IAP needs to appoint someone to verify all pictures, polls, questions, etc that are posted by new members. Sure, it`ll probably make things slower, but something needs to be done! Many websites have this installed and IAP needs it as well. Members that have been on the site for a certain time can be exempt, but if you are a new member, posts should be monitored. I`m going to copy this suggestoin to Laura and if you agree you should too!! :)
  8. MODS ~ please help me in monitoring the photo pages and other pages. Horrific porn was posted in photos sections and they need to be deleted as soon as they are seen. I reported it to Laura also. TX!!
  9. my 4 yr old has 3 planter warts on his foot,.. any home remedies gals or is this a dr visit?
  10. ok ladies, sry its long but i really need some advice, a year ago my 5 yr old brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, over the last year my mom has had a hard time dealing with his diagnosis because there is no cure and all she can do is give him 5 insulin shots a day to keep him alive, she looks at it like march 13th 2011 was the death of her healthy little boy and she woke up with this sick child, well i always tell her she needs to go to counseling to learn how to cope with this but lately i`m more worried about my baby brother, he came home the other day from kindergarten and had a picture of a red headed boy with a knife, 3 people under the ground dead and another one on top of the ground covered in blood, he recently grabbed one of my 15 yr old brother`s pocket knives out and started swinging it at my older brother because they were fighting, and then he told my mother he wanted to be a serial killer when he grows up! he has said before that he wishes he would die, that he didn`t want to wake up the next morning,.....
