LKLmama (1021.9 days ago) Is it really bad advice to tell her to go to a BREASTFEEDING SITE??
angie2008 (1022.4 days ago) Feed on demand, it will be a lot of work at first as baby will eat every 2-3 hours or even a little closer together at times. This is great to build your milk supply and establish breastfeeding. As your LO gets a little older it will develop into a routine and you will know when to expect your lo to become hungry.
*jellybean2* (1022.6 days ago) everyone has to find what works best for them as a parent. i fed on demand at first but my lo would just suck foremilk all day long and never get to the good stuff. she was grazing, this gave her tummy ache and then she would cry, i would feed, give her more tummyache then she would cry. my very experienced midwife suggested i try feeding every 2-3 hours as it does take an hour for breastmilk to be diggested after a FULL feed so i fed for 20 mins on each side then tried everything else when she cried before offering another feed if that didnt work of course i fed again but the majority of the time it was something else bothering her. we r now at 7 months and still going strong, i fed exclusively for 6 months and have recently trained as a breastfeeding peer supporter...i dont know it all but can offer support and tell u my experiences which is all anyone can do. as i was once told...listen to all the advice going and then make your own mind up! good luck and well done for getting this far!!! :D
MS.mom (1022.6 days ago) Well I don`t regret waking up my baby. I regretted not doing it during the first month to get my supply in check when my sister told me not to. Lactation consultants say every 2-3 hrs or at least 10-12 feedings a day. So yes, if my infant baby didn`t wake at night and he was literally on me the whole day and was irritable when I wouldn`t have enough milk because he was constantly on me during the day. That is why he would be on me. As soon as I started doing the night feedings and waking him up my supply increased back up, he quit demanding it every minute during the day. Of course some people have a good milk supply to start with and it never fazes their bodies if the baby don`t eat in like 5-6 hrs. I struggled with mine for a while and yes I fed before 3 hrs or 2 hrs if he wanted it. But I was losing my supply even more b/c he wasn`t eating at night. Any KNOWLEDGEABLE lactation consultant would tell you that would be the best thing I could have done. In fact that is what they told me to do in the hospital at first to keep my supply in check. So I feel learning that I did have a problem at first, and I fixed it and worked out the kinx. I did the right thing. I feel I do know a good bit about breastfeeding and why people may have problems with a lack of supply. WHy? because it happened to me. I learned from my mistakes.
canadababy (1022.6 days ago) My 11 week old is on a schedule during the day, she eats, plays and then naps. When she wakes up she eats, plays and then naps. Always eating when she gets up :) At night I feed her when she cries and then she`s right back to sleep. This started around 6 weeks, before that it was ALL her schedule!
california-mom (1022.6 days ago) Im a huge advocate of breast feeding. Successfully nursed my 1st for 2 years, 2nd for 19 months (he self weened) and this lil one is of course still nursing at 12 weeks =) Ive always fed on demand. Always, no matter what age. Why limit eating and bonding time?! However, I NEVER woke my babies up to nurse.
a-mum2b (1022.7 days ago) didn`t mean to cause a dramafest. i was just wondering bc my hosp said to wake baby every 2 hrs to feed during the day and every 3-4 at night and she just doesnt seem to want it that often. she jusst falls asleep mid-feed. Thankyou everyone for what advice they can give me from their experience! And i did cheeck out that website, and it gave me some good pointers/tips!!
Mommy2be707 (1022.7 days ago) mommy2four i think christinaswar said that because some women on here arent intellegent and some women dont even breast feed and they will give u their opinion opposed to kellymom.com where its all right and not just opinions
Mommy2be707 (1022.7 days ago) i agree with christinaswar, i dont know why anyone would ever try to put a BABY on a feeding schedual... my daughter is 6 months old and she eats whenever she wants and always has i wouldnt think it was fare if someone told me i couldnt eat yet
MS.mom (1022.7 days ago) mommy2four- I agree with you to some degree about the demand. I do believe in a little structure when they get a few months older because babies like a schedule, they seem to do better that way. I`m not saying if the baby is hungry in 2 hrs say well it isn`t time to feed yet I am waiting another hour till time. I am saying feed. But also if they are not asking for it at the 3 hr mark or whatever hr then try to feed them anyway to set some kind of pattern. They will only eat if they are hungry anyway. (Like I said at the very bottom, set a schedule later on in a few months, but be flexible). With not being on schedule for instance, when my few week old infant was not waking every 3-4 hours at night, my older sister who didn`t breastfed thought I was being irrational for waking up the baby to feed. *The first 8 weeks are very crucial to setting your supply to be adequate.* I listened to her and about messed myself up. He would end up eating ALL DAY! NEVER CONTENT unless he was on the breast and he would sleep at night. was losing my supply more and more at night and just plain irratable during the day. I started back every 3-4 hours at night until he was 8 weeks or a little older and upped my supply again eventually. After a little after 8 weeks I would let him wake on his own, but he pretty much would wake at the 3-4 hour mark. Then it became 4-6. I just wanted to share my story about the fact of staying on schedule at night, but pretty much feed on demand during the day. I hope I helped. And I do realize what mommy2four was meaning about the schedule thing and she is right about not waiting until `your schedule time to feed` if babe is hungry.
mommy2four (1022.8 days ago) By the way, ChristinasWar, I found your first comment very insulting. Some of us are intelligent, well educated moms and we are capable of giving good advice.
mommy2four (1022.8 days ago) I would definitely say to feed on demand. I did all the way til my babies weaned themselves shortly after their first birthday. Do not impose a schedule on them. It can be exhausting, but our bodies produce milk on supply and demand. If you do not allow the baby to demand what he/she needs, the supply will not be there. This happened with my sister in law. She loves to be in control and insists on imposing a schedule as soon as possible and as a result of that (I believe) she doesn`t produce enough milk and has to supplement with formula.
LKLmama (1022.8 days ago) Now why on earth would you stop nursing on demand at 4 months?? Does a baby stop having more/less active days and growthspurts? UGh
~amy~ (1022.8 days ago) I agree with the other comments too.. when Joel was first born all it seemed like I did was sit in that chair and feed. He would eat for 40-50 minutes and then seem like I would change him and he was ready to go again! It was very tiring but trust me it does get easier. Now at 14 weeks he will eat 5 minutes and be ready to play or sleep. It doesn`t take much out of a day anymore to feed him. It does get easier!
LKLmama (1022.8 days ago) MY ADVICE WOULD BE NOT TO LOOK FOR BREASTFEEDING ADVICE ON THIS SITE! Join a breastfeeding group and add kellymom.com to your favorites list! ALWAYS nurse on demand!!!
butterblocksmom (1022.8 days ago) On demand prior to 4 months ...don`t forget these little bugalugs have more active days/less active days and also go through cluster feeding and growth spurts. It is hard on new mommies to feed on demand but there really is no way of regulating until they get to be 4-5 months old. A pattern will start to emerge but in the beginning, literally all they do is sleep, eat and poop!
~amy~ (1022.8 days ago) I feed my LO on demand. Some days he will go 4 hours inbetween a feeding and sometimes it is only 2 hours. He is the only one who knows what his body needs and at what time it needs it!
MS.mom (1022.8 days ago) Feed on demand. i just looked at your due date the baby is still very Newborn. Feed at least every 3 hours from the START of the last feeding to the other. I felt like that is all I did was breastfeed for the first month. The baby will eventually go to longer periods of not needing it, but feed on demand for now for sure. Eventually start a schedule but still be flexible with it. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be happy to try to answer them for you.
