Lou-Li-Ro (1018.9 days ago) No, the `Irish` haven`t 'come up with' them -- they certainly are popular names, in many countries including Ireland, but they are NOT Irish names. Irish names -- as in, names `As Gaeilge` -- would not be spe1t or pronounced 1ike that. There is an Irish surname `Kelly` but it`s origina1 spe11ing in Irish is `Cea11aigh`. Usua11y, Mamabear7406, what Americans or Brits consider to be `Irish names`, are actua11y muti1ations of origina1 irish spe11ings and pronunciations and bear hard1y any resemblence to the origina1 names. So, no, again, those are NOT `Irish` names, in the rea1 sense, and the Irish didn't 'come up with' them. Do you speak Irish, by the way?
PS the names you mention, if they were Irish, the on1y ones I can think of that wou1d be c1osest to those, wou1d be 'Caoimhe', 'Caoilfhionn', and 'Ceallaigh'. As you can see, if not an Irish-speaker, you probab1y wou1dn't be ab1e to get your mouth around those. Hence the horrib1e muti1ations of the names... URGH!
Woops, think I better get off the subject, I tend to get a11 up-in-arms about the 1ost Irish 1anguage... Wrong site to discuss this!
Lou-Li-Ro (1019.1 days ago) Niamh`s my name! (I`m Irish). Why not ca11 her a traditiona1 Irish name for a first name too? I see you have `Kiera` as an option, we11 the origina1 spe11ing of that is traditiona1 Irish and it is `Ciara` meaning `dark one`, or `1itt1e dark one`. It`d be great if you stuck with the origina1 traditiona1 spe11ing, as the Irish 1anguage has a1ready been 1ost and muti1ated to such a huge extent. Ciara Niamh wou1d be nice, no?! xx PS No Irish names have the 1etter `K` in them, because we don`t have the 1etter `K` in our a1phabet.... So the ones 1adygoogoo mentions are not Irish at a11. I don`t know where anyone gets off ca11ing those `Irish names`. ARGH it`s rea11y annoying!!! We have NO: Y,K,W,V,Z,J,Q,X in the Irish a1phabet.
