adriana03`s poll Show results | Hide results

Pregnancy-poll poll just a question that Ive always wondered. Why do some ladies do an amnio test??? What would be your reaction if something was wrong? Why do you need to know??

I just had one soft marker on my baby`s ultrasound (echogenic intracardiac focus). All other tests were negative. Which put me at a 1 in 3344 chance for a baby with down syndrome. Even though the numbers were very positive, I still elected to have an amnio just for peace of mind. Not only to educate myself, but also because I tend to dwell on negative, and I don`t want to do that unless necessary with this pregnancy. I got the test two days ago and am still waiting for the results. To be honest, I am more worried about the chances for miscarriage than I am about the test results. I feel pretty positive about that.

my friend was offered to have one because the baby has 25% chance of having sickle cell. She opted not to get one as she will keep the baby either way and the doc agreed and said most people who get them will abort if there is a problem... I probably would have tested to just know and keep the baby either way. So you are prepared and know atleast somewhat of what to expect.

as someone who has worked for social services with children with disabilities and as a children`s nurse and we declined the blood tests for downs and spina bifida. we believed that any many disabilities would show up on the ultrasound and that if our baby had downs that it wouldn`t make one bit of difference to us. If the ultrasound had shown major disabilties we wouldn`t have continued with the pregnancy. Not because we couldn`t care for a baby with disabilities but because I wouldn`t want my baby to go through the pain of being born only to live a life in pain or die a painful death. I personally wouldn`t end my child`s life for any other reason BUT I can totally understand women making such a difficult choice and I am supportive of their decision. Having a disabled child affects the whole family and I can understand that in some instances it would piut a huge financial and emotional strain on the family...and by family I mean not just parents but other children also.

knowledge is power. i would want to know so i could prepare. it would be so sad to have all this `normal` baby stuff at home when you can`t use it because of medical issues. can you imagine bringing home a baby with a defect/disease and know nothing about it but what you've been told in a few day or weeks time?

I didn`t get tested and I won`t! Most defects can be seen by ultrasound. So you could still be prepared by the time the baby is born. Besides the amnio often gives a false positive for down syndrome.. lots of worthless worrying IMO. I wouldn`t abort anyways so its just something else that I don`t want ot worry about during a pregnancy.

luckily Ive never needed one but I think I would If there could be a problem I dont know why but I would just really want to know before the birth and have time to come to terms with it. I would find it a lot harder to go through the pregancy wondering and being scared and also dealing with the shock at the birth if something were wrong.

A friend of our is a carrier of hemophelia, if she were pregnant with a son it is likley he`d be very severe. She had one to find out if her unborn baby was as. It was something they needed to be prepared for so they could make the best decision for them ~

Some women would like to mentally prepare themselves if something was wrong with their baby. I know a woman who completely rejected her Down`s Syndrome baby because she didn`t know she had DS. It took her months to accept this baby as her own and I truly believe that wouldn`t have happened if she had known in advance :)

to be honest If there was a major birth defect I would abort. But would have to be major and very obvious...not a there could be something wrong with the baby...had to be clean.

ya i agree with ca-mom. i would never abort due to a birth defect but there are definitely some things that would take getting used to and preparing for...especially if you have other kids and would have to explain to them, or if you work full time and need to make arrangements for caring for a baby with special needs. i would not want to be expecting a healthy baby only to be suprised at birth with the shock that there is something wrong with my child. it would be nice for me to have a little while to adjust to the fact before it was here...not that i would love my baby any differently.

Ive always gotten tested. I would NEVER abort my baby bc of a birth defect HOWEVER I would want to know ASAP to see if theres any special precautions that need to be taken due to them having a defect or problem. I also would be doing a LOT of research on the defect while pregnant so I could know everything there is to know about my babys problem. I would be educating myself like crazy. Also, I would want the medical staff to be able to be fully prepared for the delivery of a special baby and be able to have everything ready. If I didnt know I was having a special baby and delivered one, the last thing Id want is to have everyone rushing around trying to get specialists etc whereas if we know beforehand, everyones prepared. I see it as preparation for making sure my baby gets the best possible care and making sure I know everything there is to know about the problem =) Caring for my baby BEFORE theyre even here =)

  1. Is SaraKelly still on here? I know she was a mod but I didn`t see her post in the previous Who Is A Mod poll...
  2. ANGRY!!!! My jenakers account is missing my ENTIRE journal from my high risk pregnancy and my letthisonestick account for my 7 month old is completely gone along with my journal. I AM SICK OVER IT!
  3. I`ve re-thought the moderating of the member-postings. How does this sound? Let`s change it to usage, rather than length of time as a member. Say your first 10 or 20 polls, questions and pictures need to be approved by a Mod or something like that. Someone posting the racist polls and adding the kiddie porn is unlikely to participate as a normal member. Once you are verified as a regular member you`re no longer monitored.
  4. How long did it take you to get pregnant after you got your IUD (Mirena) out?
  5. Twilight valentines for 7 year olds... appropriate or not? DD received a valentine with a very... sultry smoldery Edward on the front and I was just kind of surprised that anyone would buy those for 7 year olds? I know I`m on the conservative side in general on those kinds of things, but this really surprised me!
  6. My daughter is almost 5 months and 3 weeks ago my hair started falling out. I know it`s normal but how long did it last for you?
  7. With all the issues going on with the site maybe we need an updated list on Mods. Obviously Laura is the one to go to but if there is a concern and it needs immediate attention and a Mod is online it may be good to know who is who so you can reach out to them. Mods, can you please post here so we know who you are. (Esp since some profiles names had to be changed because of recent log on issues)
  8. Anyone wanna try http://parentspuzzlepieces.spruz.com/ a free community site I just made? Let me know if you want the password and would want to help add things to it!!
  9. I think with all the posting issues IAP needs to appoint someone to verify all pictures, polls, questions, etc that are posted by new members. Sure, it`ll probably make things slower, but something needs to be done! Many websites have this installed and IAP needs it as well. Members that have been on the site for a certain time can be exempt, but if you are a new member, posts should be monitored. I`m going to copy this suggestoin to Laura and if you agree you should too!! :)
  10. MODS ~ please help me in monitoring the photo pages and other pages. Horrific porn was posted in photos sections and they need to be deleted as soon as they are seen. I reported it to Laura also. TX!!
