mommyofxyxyxx (980.9 days ago) I think maybe the doctor meant that some women go overboard once they become pregnant. Yes, ANY cat has the chance of carrying toxoplasmosis and you should NOT change the litter box when you`re pregnant. Cats can get this virus from other cats, from its mother....who got it from mice. So if your cat is a mouser, REALLY don`t do it. Some people still clean it but use a mask and gloves. I don`t. Also, since its in the feces, if you cat steps in it or you have a covered box, anything they step on can be contaminated..like your counters or bedding etc. so you shouldn`t be snuggling close to your kitty and you should be washing your hands often when you even pet it. Now..if you`ve had cats all your life, you probably are immune but still...just be cautious.
RowanSkysMom (981.3 days ago) That`s just cruel! Hope they don`t `get rid` of their first child when the second comes along lol. What kind of logic is that?
ArcticArlz (981.3 days ago) I would be totally miffed at that, I would never give up my kitties for anything, indoor cats with their shots have pretty much no chance of carrying the toxicplasmosis (sp? haha) bacteria that Dr`s are so worried about. All of my cousins and both of my sisters have had healthy kids and they all own cats. Phooey to that. If you`re worried, make DH change the litter or where a mask. I hate seeing people give up animals for babies, I think that ONLY makes sense if the kid has a bad allergy, and even so it breaks my heart.
PS - I`m a big cat lover (if you didn`t notice)
adalynnsmommy(PINK) (981.3 days ago) I could never get rid of my fur baby! My cat may be taking a back seat to the new baby, but he`ll always be my boy.
jas1987 (981.3 days ago) When i was 9 weeks pregnant my fianc`e had to deploy to Afghanistan so i went and stayed with family in another state. There was no way i was going to get rid of my pets, i had three rabbits and we bought a kitten who was 8 weeks old at the time, i didn`t know i was pregnant when i bought the kitten, and there was no way i was giving up my pets, they are part of the family. So we paid to put them in a boarding kennel, it was expensive to put them in for 7 months but worth it. When William was 2 months old we bought a puppy and two weeks ago we bought another kitten... I love Animals, but we gave our rabbits away 3 weeks ago as cleaning and feeding was very time consuming and i didn`t have much time for them. But our Other pets are great no problems with a having a baby...
4thonitsway (981.3 days ago) his comment was about toxicplasmosis(sp?) from changing the litter box, I thought it was rude and completely uncalled for. I dont change the litter box and you can get an indoor cat tested for it. he just ticked me off with it
sammy28 (981.3 days ago) I have 2 cats and they are fine with Alex.
innocentangel (981.3 days ago) well i dont know about getting rid of that cat personally i wouldnt but i know you cant change the litter, theres something in the litter that you cant inhale..Thats what i was told..
4thonitsway (981.3 days ago) looks like my spelling sucks tonight too lol
luvbeingamom (981.3 days ago) I don`t and didn`t own a pet. however, i would never get rid of a pet b/c i got pregnant. There are reasonable precautions that should be taken while pregnant and when adding a baby to a home with pets, other than that it is fine. With that said, i have had friends find new homes for some of their pets b/c they find it difficult to pay enough attention to the pet while having a new baby in the home.
4thonitsway (981.3 days ago) I pointed out to that doc that a responsable pet owner doesnt send an animal that loves you and has done nothing wrong away to the pound where they will be put to sleep just because Im having a baby. I take all proper precautions just like I should
