I would go to your local nursery and buy to planters already completed. Take them home and place them on each side of the side walk or stairs. Planted flowers can take a few days or weeks to really fill out and look as beautiful. The planters all ready prepped and done and are full of color and variety and no fuss but water :) If you really want to plant I`d go with geramiums or petunias ~ they are very nice, just pick out the dead leaves as they bloom and die :)

If your hoping to put your house on the market soon or in the near future i think it would be a great idea to dress up the outside to draw potential buyers in! My suggestion is cheap and easy if you have never planted flowers before. go to your local grocerie store and buy the little flowers that are about 2 bucks each. turn up the soil in your area and plant them all in front. Then go to a walmart maybe and pick up some plants.. plant them in between some of the flowers!! I would suggest the taller plants in nice pots on each side of the door!!

Sounds silly, but have you seen that `flower carpet` ad on TV? You roll out the mat (or cut it to fit a walkway) and water it, and it blooms. They sell them at Canadian Tire, Walmart, etc...
