lemonysickness (144.5 days ago) http://www.healthywomen.org/healthtopics/humanpapillomavirus - Skibbit and pooka are right, ALL warts are caused by HPV (plus I had a wart on my foot and my doctor also told me that all warts are caused by HPV). Read the article. Not all HPV strands are permanent, some will go away with a healthy immune system. HPV isn`t just spread by sexual contact which was why when I worked at Payless Shoes I always told people to try on shoes with socks because someone trying on a shoe with a wart on their foot can give HPV to the next person that tries the shoe on without a sock and maybe they have a blister or cut that can get infected.
pooka (144.6 days ago) they are all caused by HPV but there are different types of HPV. About 100 different kinds.
armymom (144.6 days ago) hmm if all worts are HPV then I`m confused. As a child I had worts on my hands and 2 of my sisters did also. We had them removed.. and for a while I would get another here and there.. have it removed. After I turned 13-14 I never got them again. My sisters dont have them anymore either. Never had genital worts either.. My neice did have a small wort on her knee but I figured it was just genetics. Is that still considered HPV?
shocked-over-3 (144.6 days ago) My ex-husband (who I may mention wasn`t a very `monogamous` type of guy,he had a large number of marks in his bedpost..nuff said) gave me HPV..I was mortified at the time since he was the first and only man I`d slept with when I found out I had it.
But time has gone by and I`ve learned that a large majority of people have it in some form.
Best thing is to have yearly pap smears done to be sure that any cancer that could be caused by HPV is caught early.
pooka (144.6 days ago) I knew a woman who had genital warts and passed it on to her son during birth and he had warts on his voice box and throat. He was always undergoing surgery to remove them so they didn`t damage his speaking.
harimaudahan (144.6 days ago) Well if I do have it the doctors never told me..
happyforest (144.6 days ago) how do you get HPV without being sexually active? i know it just takes skin to skin contact to spread warts, which means you dont have to have intercourse, but you would still be doing something down there in order to come in contact with them. and the strains that dont cause warts, how would you get those if not from some kind of sex contact with another person, whether its intercourse or not? i guess maybe if you had an open cut with blood and they did too and it touched each other then you could get it, but im sure that would be soooo rare like maybe 1% of the cases or something...
mumzie1212 (144.7 days ago) sorry, have to revise what i said, 80% of ALL women will have HPV, you do not need to be sexually active to get it... there are at least 30 different types of HPV and some some not even effect the genitia area. and you may never have any symptoms. and only a few types of HPV are cancer causing. only a few strands cause genital warts which is i guess what everyone thinks is `dirty` but apparently after some research, you dont have to be sexually active to even get them. this vaccination that is out only covers a few strands of HPV, you can still get it even with it. i just did some online research because i was told a long time ago that i tested posative and my dr. never made a big deal about it b/c it is so common.
mumzie1212 (144.7 days ago) ATM is right, 80% sexually active women have it or will test positive for it in their lifetime. nothing to be ashamed of. and you can test positive once and not test positive again for a while later. i have gone religiously to my yearly for 10 years and have only had one abnormal pap smear. i have never been on a treatment for it, it is just something to make you aware of.
happyforest (144.7 days ago) the reason its not showing 80% is most people dont know they have it (most dont unless they have the strain for warts, and even then they may not have an outbreak). with 80% of ppl having it, it doesnt really matter how many ppl you have sex with, you are likely to get it from just 1 or 2 people, and men ESPECIALLY dont know they have it bc they dont get paps
thebigtomato (144.8 days ago) Oh, and I want to state that in my prior post, I was speaking specifically about sexually transmitted hpv. Also, I was not meaning to imply that all women with hpv are having sex with people indiscriminately even in cases when it is sexually transmitted. There are about 100 types of HPV, only 30 of which are spread through genital contact.
thebigtomato (144.8 days ago) Also, hpv can be suppressed by a person`s immune system and cause them to test negative for it. I was pregnant and never got an hpv test. Whenever they ask me if I want a screening for hpv, chlamydia, etc. I refuse because I don`t feel like I need it since I`m in a monogamous relationship. I don`t know about elsewhere, but it isn`t part of the `routine` screening unless you want it done here.
Military~mommy (144.8 days ago) Yes, but almost all the women on this site will have been to an OB/GYN recently, and that should come up in your yearly...
thebigtomato (144.8 days ago) Also, keep in mind that your audience here is mostly a bunch of women in their 20`s and 30`s who are moms. You are not counting the women that are older and were having sex back in the day when free love was all the craze and you`re also not counting all the teens that are young and uneducated about protecting themselves. I doubt there are many prostitutes on this site or women who have specifically stayed unmarried because they like to get around (like Samantha from SATC), so my point is that there are huge populations of women that are more likely to have an STD that are not represented on this site.
themommyofangels (144.8 days ago) many people may not know they have it, especially men, and they may not have any signs but they will pass it on... hmmm
Military~mommy (144.8 days ago) Well, ATM it looks as though it is NOT true that 80% of women have HPV....
