megeanua (928 days ago) we just recently brought our baby home a few days ago and our dogs have surprised us by doing so well! We made sure to shower them with attention when we first got home and then introduced them to him. They are both so protective already. When he cries at night, if I don`t get up quick enough, my beagle is pawing at me to get up and check on him. Our dogs sleep in our room, so we have decided to keep the baby just on the other side of the door, with it open and a puppy gate up so they can`t get to him. Baby is still only a few feet from our bed. It would be so difficult for us to transistion our dogs out of the bedroom now, not up for that challenge and a newborn too.
blakesshootingstar (928 days ago) We have a lab that was only a few months old when we brought our baby home and we did all the normal things like bringing the babies blanket home ahead of time and letting her smell it but we also introduced them outside of the house and then brought the baby in first and then let the dog in as to show that the baby comes first. Now I have no idea if that had any effect on the dog or not but it was another suggestion that we had gotten. We still keep an eye on them because you just never know but needless to say Blakes 13 months and the dog loves him and follows him around. Maybe its not love though .. Blakes always got leftover food on him .. haha! Good luck!!
adkarg (928 days ago) I heard somewhere that you should give the dog something to smell of the baby`s (it is best if you have something the baby was wearing or wrapped in right after birth because the dog can smell you and the baby).. My DH took home the onesie and blanket that our baby was wrapped in right after birth.. our dog had 3 days to smell it before we came home. She is absolutely wonderful with the baby!!! She treats him like her own!
mamacakes (928.2 days ago) what we did was every night when my husband left the hospital to go home he would bring the blanket the baby was wrapped in all day with him for the dogs to sniff and get used to his scent. I was in the hospital for 5 days and my hubby did that everyday. When the baby and i made it home the dogs could have cared less cause at that point it wasnt a new and exciting scent anymore :)
KR (928.5 days ago) If you bring something of babies into the house before the baby comes in and let the dog smell it (make him be gental with it though) and then bring baby in, and that will be a great start. Let the dog sleep with you, as little change will be best. Its great if either mum or dad can take the dog for a walk so he gets time too!
mdbabyno1 (928.5 days ago) Retrievers are for the most part very friendly dogs. I don`t think I would kick the dog out, she may get jealous. I would just keep an eye on the dog but if you have any doubt, move the dog. She will have to get used to having the baby around
canadababy (928.5 days ago) My DH brought a blanket home from the hospital for our german shepherd to smell before the baby came home. He`s always been fine with her, in fact he loves her! He`s always trying to lick her and lay as close has he can get to her...and he checks in on her in her crib every night before he goes to bed, it`s the sweetest thing :) Don`t stress about it too much, just keep a close eye on the dog when he`s close to the baby.
