Baby-poll poll If you already have a boy, did you circumcise your son? And if you do not already have a son, do you know if you will or will not circumcise your son? I thought that it was extremely common in the U.S., but I`ve been reading up on it and it says only about 50% of boys get circumcised now (compared to say 20 or 30 years ago). And if you did or didn`t, what were the reasons you chose to do it or not do it? I`m 26 weeks pregnant with a boy, and I`m still not sure on what is the best decision. I know it varies from family to family on what is best for US, but I`d just like to get your advice anyway! :)

i chose not to circumcise my son, his daddy isnt and it is no longer medically necessary so i chose not to, i did not want my poor little boy to go through that anyways, my husband is from colombia nd like noone does it there, the nurse who was taking care of me after my son was born and was from like russia or some place and we got to talking and she said when she came to america she thought everyone was jewish, mostly americans are the ones who circumcise i guess! I also think that it is wise to leave it there, it is their body and when they get old enough to know all about it they can decide to stay the way they are or get circumcised. everyone has their own personal opinion.

Thank you so much for all of your comments! I didn`t really think about it til the doctor mentioned it, and then I realized I don`t know what I should do. The funny thing is, when I was a kid, I thought every boy everywhere had it done, and I remember a boy being made fun of for not having it done. However, with the rate of boys not being circumcised rising and rising, its much more common and I assume people are realizing how its really just unnecessary. Maybe TMI, but before my SO (my sons father) I had only been with circumcised men, and he`s not, and I`ve not only realized how much more natural it is, but how much better `IT` is ! ;) anyway, your answers helped a lot, I got a lot more moms saying they would not or did not than I thought, so its good to know I`m not the only one considering not to do it.

My husband is, my son is and any future sons will be. I was raised Jewish as well as Christian (dads Jewish, moms Christian) and theyre all circumsized. I know its more of an American thing and so far every guy Ive talked to or heard talk about it, has made fun of guys who arent. Ive never heard a guy say (unless they werent) circumsized penises look better than un circumsized penises. Americans typically think circumsized looks better and is the norm from what Ive seen in my 26 years lol Plus he wont have any special additional cleaning in that area to do. Oh...and circumsized and un circumsized penises do NOT look the same erect =S

So, ladies, would you get your daughter`s labia snipped if they hung out at birth? Lots of baby girls do.I mean, I`d hate for her to be embarrassed someday in the locker room. I`m not saying your reasons are wrong, it`s just so ...your opinion of what you think your son might want. There are 18 more sensitive spots on an uncircumcised penis...read a pretty cool study about that!

aidensmommy1 (922.8 days ago)
My son was circumsized and any other boys I have will be to. His daddy is, all family members are including cousins and everyone. I didnt want my son to be emberressed if he saw one of his cousins or something and his didnt `look` the same. Also it is VERY common in my area to circumsize. I didnt want him being made fun of. Plus I think it looks much better, and you don`t have to teach him how to clean it.

mimi2b2aboy (922.8 days ago)
my reason is the same as mikeysmommy. there may not be HUGE health risks at not having a child circumsized but it can get an infection if it is not cleaned properly. I m 5 months pregnant with my first son and he will be circumsized and i`m not sayin that i`m doing it to make it look better like alot of woman have state on here that we do it for glamour reasons. but again it`s to all their own. i will have my sons circumsized doesn`t mean i`m going to judge another mother for not having it done. : )

I had 3 boys when I was a teenager. I did what every1 told me was the norm, I circumsized. To this day, I regret it, and I get such a sick feeling in my stomach that I did that to them for no reason. I cut off the tip of their penis, because every1 else said its `cleaner`. We are pretty much the only country that does it for that reason, and for cosmetic reasons. There is no epidemic of dirty penis`s and men getting infections in their penis in other countries. So, im my opinion, that is a bullsh** reason. If my new daughter had been a boy, there was no way he was getting circumsized. For what? So he coulda looked like his brothers? Please. They would never be comparing their penis`s. I hate this topic. I hate knowing I put my babies through such unecessary pain.

I chose to circumsize my son due to the fact that his father is. I feel that it is very common to have it done and I didn`t want him to be ashamed or embarrassed as he got older and realize he is different from other boys. And also if he was to ever get a glimpse of daddy, he may want to be just like him in that sense so may as well get it over with.

MichelleMc(pink!) (922.9 days ago)
nychellay: May I ask if you are Jewish or Christian? Because as a Christian, my understanding is that circumcision is one of the things we are no longer required to do, like eating pork and shellfish, because Jesus fulfilled the covenant God made with Moses. :) (and by the way, an erect penis looks the same whether it is circumcised or not :) )

I did a project on female circumcision while in nursing school. I had to present the PRO side of it. It`s amazing how little people know about female circumcision and hate it so strongly. Needless to say, I don`t support female either, but our country is so against it because it`s not our culture. It does bother me that some people purely get this done to look like someone else in their family. I have never compared my vagina to my moms. Ever. Women are taught that `it`s okay if our lips are a little longer than Susie`s that how God made you every vagina is different.` We teach little girls hygiene, but we don`t want to teach our boys hygiene so why not just cut off the problem, literally. I`ve also had someone compare circumcision to getting my 4 month old daughter`s ears pierced. Difference to me? She can let her piercings grow back.

nychellay (922.9 days ago)
I am not perfect, but i do try to live up to the bible`s standards. And according to the Bible, it`s considered a symbol of the covenant between God and God`s people. It`s also best to do it withing 8 days, or there could be complications. Am I saying that being uncircumsized is wrong? No, of ocurse not. You have the final say. But as for me and my household, that would be the primary reason. Secondly, it just looks better. (LOL).

Aiona (922.9 days ago)
I`m not sure that one can really lump percentages in the U.S. It`s very regional. When I was in the midwest, the circumcision rate at my particular hospital was about 95%. In the south-southwest where I currently live, it`s more like 60%. A lot of things have changed since my parents had me. My mother said when she was working in the hospital (on the East Coast, it was a Jewish hospital, but not all the patients were Jewish), circumcision was 100% and there was no consent form to sign. Nowadays, in order for it to be done, a surgical consent form must be signed by a parent, after explaining the risks and benefits of the procedure. My husband was circumcised, but I do not plan to circumcise my son. Although I`ve performed and seen many circumcisions that turned out just fine, I really am not keen to let anyone perform one on my own baby, when it really isn`t a necessary surgery.

mama2conrad (922.9 days ago)
sunderlandmommy - the reason it`s more popular in the US is because we are notoriously a large group of superficial, outer-appearance oriented people that sexualize just about anything we can. And what is a better excuse for the perpetuation of genital mutilation then the thread of logic `I want him to look like his father`.

Dannie (922.9 days ago)
We circumsized our son, mainly because my husband wouldn`t have it any other way ;o) The Dr said he didn`t even cry during the procedure.

canadababy (922.9 days ago)
No boys yet for me either, but I will be circumsizing any future sons, no question. I want him to be like his dad. I also I don`t know how to clean an uncircumsized penis and my DH sure doesn`t either! I wouldn`t want any infections or any other problems associated with not circumsizing :) I was there when my nephew had it done, it`s not that bad...

ermsmom (922.9 days ago)
I just had a son earlier this week. We were going to circumcise him purely as that was my husband`s choice however he`s a little crooked and the doctors felt safer having a urologist do it. We`re still waiting on a call back to schedule the appointment. I`m having second thoughts though. It`s not medically necessary and my little boy is completely perfect right now. I think we`re going to have to revisit the whole idea now.

soon2be3 (922.9 days ago)
I have two boys and both of them are circumsized. Neither one of them cried through the procedure, nor had any lasting effects. One of them actually slept through the entire procedure. Both were done within days of being born at a Urologists Office, who specializes in baby circumcision. We have not had any problems with adhesions. It was a personal decision for us and one that I do not regret.

happyforest (922.9 days ago)
oh and i forgot to say his dad IS circ, but after doing all the research and realizing it was unnecessary, he didnt mind that i left him in tact. and really, how many kids look at their dads penises anyway?! lol

happyforest (922.9 days ago)
i didnt. there was no reason for me to do it. im not religious, and there was nothing medically wrong with his penis, so i kept him the way he was. he was abosolutely PERFECT, there wasnt one thing i thought i needed to change about him. he wont get made fun or of feel singled out, the rate of circ is changing, its not like our generation. i worked at a daycare, we had 8 boys, 4 were circ, 4 werent. and it doesnt matter if they `wont remember it`, it still sucked at the time. MY SON`S PENIS IS NOT GROSS!!!! we have never had one problem with it. its just basically whether you think it looks good or not, and im not going to do a cosmetic procedure on my child. i think it looks just fine

♥Lucky♥ (922.9 days ago)
im also from the uk and we dont have our son`s circumcised. i also dont understand the reasons why it is done.

awaitingmyangel10 (922.9 days ago)
i am having a boy and he will def be circumcised! I think not doing it is gross, plus i don`t want him to be different and ashamed of himself and have to experience the pain of doing it later in life when they don`t remember when they are a baby!

hillaryandmikesbaby (922.9 days ago)
i will circumsize my son IF i have a son.. my bf is circumsized and everyone in my family is as well.. but like someone else said neither way is wrong and its a personal choice for your family.

mikey and cjs mommy (922.9 days ago)
my 15month old was circumcised at 1week old. i have now boyh #2 on the way and he will also have it done. i think it is a matter of preference really. i prefer to not worry about how to teach them proper cleaning due to infections. and daddy is circumcised so i think from a growing up point of view they will feel more comfortable if their body reflects their daddy`s. but definatelt all reference. there is no right or wrong no matter what anyone says.

newmomtobe85 (923 days ago)
i would just like to ask, and i dont want to sound ignorant and im not being mean, but circumcision is fairly rare here in the uk, can i just ask what are the reasons behind a child being circumsised? i saw it on the tv and it looked so painful the poor baby was screaming after, so i just wondered what the reasons were?

MichelleMc(pink!) (923 days ago)
I don`t have a son yet, but if I eventually have one, I don`t plan to circumcise him. My reasons are because it is medically unnecessary and because I sort of feel like it`s `Oh, look at my beautiful baby boy; he`s perfect in every way...oh, except for this little bit of skin here, let`s just cut that right off.` No offense intended to anyone, as I don`t believe there is a right or wrong choice about circumcision. It is a personal decision that only the parents can decide. :)

mama2conrad (923 days ago)
I did have my son circumcised. And I regret it. You can`t regret not doing it, because it can then always be done later. But you can`t take back something that is gone. I wish I had let him have his foreskin. I would have told him when he was older (10 or 11?) That if he ever wants a circumcision I will pay for it, and to just let me know what he decides when he is older. Babies come out perfect... who was I to decide he was not completely perfect, and that his wiener skin had to be removed? Whatever you choose, please look up `penile adhesion` it is a COMMON (70%) complication of circs, that doctors do not tell you about until it happens, and it is completely preventable. It`s not serious, although it can be, however it is heartbreaking and nerve wrecking.

robynder (923 days ago)
I am having a buy this time and I will circumsize but its only becasue I think boys should be like thier dads. My own personal opinion.

athenab1984 (923 days ago)
No boys yet..good poll though. Don`t know if I will circumsize or not. Is it really neccessary? why put my child through the pain if no REAL health dangers arise with a NON- circumsized penis?

blondiex2 (923 days ago)
*IF you can, I`d really appreciate it if after you vote if you could just leave a quick comment on why or why not you would or wouldn`t, thanks ladies ! :)

  3. I`ve re-thought the moderating of the member-postings. How does this sound? Let`s change it to usage, rather than length of time as a member. Say your first 10 or 20 polls, questions and pictures need to be approved by a Mod or something like that. Someone posting the racist polls and adding the kiddie porn is unlikely to participate as a normal member. Once you are verified as a regular member you`re no longer monitored.

  5. Twilight valentines for 7 year olds... appropriate or not? DD received a valentine with a very... sultry smoldery Edward on the front and I was just kind of surprised that anyone would buy those for 7 year olds? Obviously Laura is the one to go to but if there is a concern and it needs immediate attention and a Mod is online it may be good to know who is who so you can reach out to them. Mods, can you please post here so we know who you are. (Esp since some profiles names had to be changed because of recent log on issues)

  9. I think with all the posting issues IAP needs to appoint someone to verify all pictures, polls, questions, etc that are posted by new members. Sure, it`ll probably make things slower, but something needs to be done! Many websites have this installed and IAP needs it as well. Members that have been on the site for a certain time can be exempt, but if you are a new member, posts should be monitored. I`m going to copy this suggestoin to Laura and if you agree you should too!! :)
  10. MODS ~ please help me in monitoring the photo pages and other pages. Horrific porn was posted in photos sections and they need to be deleted as soon as they are seen. I reported it to Laura also. TX!!
