bethk`s poll Show results | Hide results

Baby-poll poll Can any1 explain how a nipple shield should fit on my nipple or have any pictures of how it should look like? I bought Medela Nipple Shield (Size Large) and they seem too Big! My nipple is no where near the sides or the tip. I cant find any pics on the internet to how it should look as they all have babys heads in the way lol. B4 any1 starts the lecture on lactation consultants etc.. I am buying them as a just incase I have similar issues as I did last time I BF`d! If I knew about these then it would have helped me a lot but hopefully I wont have to use them but its a JUST INCASE MEASURE! I want to be completely prepared!

I use an extra small. Even the small ones seemed a little large to me, so (for me) I think that large ones would be huge. But, I agree with others that a lactation consultant would be able to fit you properly (not a lecture. I just don`t have a picture or know a better way to tell for sure). Plus once you actually use it, it should be somewhat obvious if it`s working properly or is too large and sliding around where it shouldn`t be. Maybe get a few sizes and see what feels the best for now. What you`re describing definitely sounds too large.

its supposed to be sort of big..and your nipple isnt supposed to fit all the way inside it.. you kind of make it suction on then the baby sucks and pulls your nipple more into the shield... i used one every time i nursed my son til he was 15 months... you can also talk to your dr..they will show you how to use it

Use some of the Lasinoh ointment on the flat part of the shield (that goes against your skin). It will not hurt the baby to ingest a small amount and it will help it stick to your skin. You want a shield that is a bit bigger than your actual nipple. You will see why once you get in the swing of breastfeeding. Just center your nipple in the shield and stick it on with the ointment. By the time your baby is done bfing and you take the shield off, your nipple will have swollen and should now be large enough around to fill the diameter of the shield. If your nipple is still smaller than the shield when removing it from a nice long breastfeed, you should get the next size down.

Check with a lactation consultant for proper fit. Often they will provide them to you.

I had the worst time using those things- It even came to the point where I would try to tape them on- they were nothing but frustration for me.

when i used them the shield was big over my nipple too and the reason its longer is because women use them when they have too small or inverted nipples. which is what i had. they should work fine if not i would as the LC when you go to the hospital. my LC is the one who gave them to me.
