canadababy (892.5 days ago) butterblocksmom, I just found that article too, very interesting! It has some country by country stats for FAS : http://alcalc.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/33/3/195.pdf
butterblocksmom (892.5 days ago) I was just doing some research on FAS rates in the European countries and ran across an extensive book on the subject - Fetal alcohol abuse syndrome By Ernest L. Abel. In it it states - Pre-pregnancy weight and pregnancy weight gain far outweighs any effect of moderate or occassional alcohol consumption on pregnancy outcomes. And it goes on to quote extensive studies done.....interesting!
butterblocksmom (892.6 days ago) Pooka, what is the FAS rate in France & Italy? It is quite customary to drink wine with dinner each night there...or at least it was when I lived there....
canadababy (892.6 days ago) I think it`s fine to have the odd drink during pregnancy. Pooka, you said your friend works with FAS kids who`s moms say they only had a drink or two...but who would admit to drinking excessively, especially when their child was born with problems? In Europe it`s perfectly acceptable to have a glass of wine while pregnant, I think we`re all a little too uptight here, IMO. That being said, I didn`t have a drink while pregnant :) I would feel much too guilty.
aidensmommy1 (892.6 days ago) I guess I don`t care what anyone else does or how many doctors say that a glass wont be a big deal there would be no way I would risk any amounts of alcohol. I can wait 9 months to drink in order to make my baby the healthiest it can be. I think if you can`t wait 9 months to have a drink then you have a problem. My childrens health mean more to me then any drink will ever.
greekgoddess26 (892.7 days ago) personal.y i think its wrong to drink, just my opinion
Duhnellie (892.7 days ago) I had a glass of champagne at my wedding when I was 7 months pregnant. In my opinion I think a glass of wine or champagne during pregnancy is perfectly fine.
kickboxerbaby (892.8 days ago) I used to work at a drug and alcohol rehab and I have personally seen the effects of alcohol on baby`s. It can cause low birth weight, under development of the childs organs, as well as mental or physical handicaps. Also there is a highter risk of still birth or SID`s. The risk aren`t worth it.
andriette and christians mummy liz (892.8 days ago) Alot of ob`s says that red wine-1 glass once a month- can help build red blood cells and help babys heart develope good, personaly i didnt drink.
loribb (892.8 days ago) Even if it is safe to drink a glass here and there, I don`t think i would risk it, it`s just not worth it.
pooka (892.9 days ago) Army, I totally disagree and not trying at all to make moms who did drink feel judged but more and more studies are showing that even small amounts can effect a child. You should read some of that site I posted. I also have a friend who works with FAS kids and he says some of the kids their mother did only drink a few drinks here and there. It all really depends on when the alcohol is consumed, at what part of development.
EmmaReed84 (892.9 days ago) When I was pregnant I had my own Hen Night and Wedding to get through lol. I must admit, I had the tiniest bit of wine mixed with a full glass of lemonade. But only one. I also had photos of me holding wine, which was awful becasue I couldn`t drink it. I personally I don`t know how people could even remotely risk it.
armymom (892.9 days ago) I had an occasional glass of wine or half a beer during the third trimester.. or maybe just a taste of alcohol to make me stop thinking about it. I don`t think a small amount does any damage. I probably had 4 drinks total while pregnant with a few sips of other ppl`s drinks here and there. No worries. I had a easy pregnancy and delivery of a 9+lbs baby.. healthy as a horse. lol
pooka (892.9 days ago) your completely right. It kills me that even some doctors will still say a glass of wine or beer is safe!
RobinG (892.9 days ago) `Alcohol, pregnancy and safe` in the same sentence is an oxymoron IMO, nothing safe when the two are together but thats just my view on it ~
pooka (892.9 days ago) Wednesday is FAS awareness day so thought would post some information. It surprises me the # of people who still think any amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/14332_1170.asp
