loribb`s poll Show results | Hide results

Baby-poll I have a 4 day old and I am terrified that she is not getting enough milk. I`ve started supplementing with formula after offering her breast milk. She has a wet diaper everytime I change her and her poop is yellow and seedy. But she sleeps for 3-4 hours at a time and I usually have to wake her up then to feed. She usually falls asleep during breast feeding and there is nothing I can do to wake her up, I feed her in just her diaper, I change her first, I tickle her...nothing, she just sleeps. I`m just so nervous and this isn`t even my first baby! Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

If you plan to exclusively breastfeed your daughter, then only breastfeed her. Your milk supply will increase as you continue to breastfeed. The fact that your daughter has a wet and dirty diaper every time you change her is a sign that she is well hydrated. Another indication that your daughter is getting enough milk is that she falls asleep while nursing. Baby`s tend to fall asleep and stay asleep when they are full. Having said all this, you are her Mom, and if you feel that she`s not getting the nutrition she needs, it may be a good idea to take her to see the doctor.

she sounds normal to me. Just continue to BF, no need to supplement.

Good luck, loribb! I had the same issue with my first--she was a lazy eater, and as a first time mom I didn`t give my supply enough chance before I started supplementing with formula. I had inverted nipples and had to use nipple shields (which I shot formula into to get things started), so it was a lot of work for both of us. I wish I would`ve stuck it out but am happy to have a second chance with this baby. :) Breastfeeding dust to you! LOL

thsnks for all the advice ladies. I wasn`t worried until the nurse told me that my baby needs to wake every 2-3 hours to feed and that she should wake on her own, not need to be fed. She just seems so lethargic to me. She also has a little jaundice which is making her sleepy, I guess. My milk has come in and I don`t plan on supplementing any more. I was just so worried and didn`t know what else to do because my other LO was formula fed when I ended up in hospital on day 4 with an internal infection after my c-section. My milk never came in for her :( Either way I have a breastfeeding clinic tomorrow so I will get her weighed and hopefully get some reassurance.

Keep breastfeeding, stop giving any formula, and she`ll get enough milk. `Supplementing` will damage your supply, and then you really won`t produce enough. My 11 mo. old still falls asleep while breastfeeding sometimes. Other than using formula after breastfeeding, everything you`re describing sounds fine and normal.

Never supplement. That will make it harder to BF. Your baby is only 4 days your milk hasn`t truely come in yet. Baby will wake and eat when they are hungrey. What little they`re getting now is enough for them. If you are that concerned then instead of supplementing with formula pump inbetween feedings. This will increase production as well as allow you to use a bottle if baby is not latching properly. Don`t give up on BF as it is so much better for baby.

It sounds like you are doing everything right! I would not worry. Everything you have described sounds normal.

i could be wrong, but i dont think she`ll let herself starve. :)

You need to give your body a chance to build your milk supply, supplementing will only decrease your milk. The more you bf the more milk you will produce. If you feel you don`t have an adequate supply, try using milkmaid teas or anything to up your milk production, drinking a lot of water will also help! Formula is NEVER the answer if you plan to exclusivly bf, in fact I was told by my lactation consutanat to not give any bottle or pacifier for at least 4 weeks to insure that baby has no nipple confusion and so she is able to perfect her breastfeeding skills. She is learning just like you, be patient! :) As long as she is having an acceptable amount of wet/dirty diapers and she is gaining weight, she should be getting everything that she needs. She will let you know when she is hungry :)

I dont think the problem is so much that she isnt eating enough but that you are worried that you cant wake her up and feel like she musnt be eating enough if she doesnt have the energy to wake up. It is normal for babies to sleep alot, but if you feel like she is being too lethargic then I would call your pediatrician. Better safe than sorry! I hope everything is ok!

As long as she has wet and soiled diapers, she should be fine. Also as long as she isn`t losing weight, I wouldn`t be concerned.

it is normal for a baby to fall asleep at the breast.4 day olds sleep A LOT!

Stop supplementing. That will hurt your milk supply and she will come to depend on it. It is normal and natural for babies to fall asleep at the breast each feeding. She could be a very efficient sucker and get what she needs in a short period of time. As long as she is having the appropriate number of wet diapers per day, be confident in your supply.

If she is wet surely she is fine. Is there a lactation specialist through your hospital you can contact if you are really concerned. You say she wont stay awake watch her color too.

pooka (871.8 days ago)
why do you think she isn`t getting enough if she is wet every time you change her?

OMG, I posted on FB (in reponse to a suggestion made to me on From Our House To Yours) that I didn`t like a business because the items were very expensive and my friend got a bad deal there and the owner is threatening to sue me! I actually paid a consultation fee and my lawyer told me that she was `absurd with possible mental health problems.` I am protected by the fisrt ammendment to express my honest opinions freely where I choose, but he said she can take it to court(because people can TRY to sue over anything) anyway and that it might cost me legal bills. We will both be out a lot of money because she couldn`t possibly win. Can you believe that? FML! First my records and now this! I hope my baby isn`t a bad luck baby.
